Bish

So you are getting a cabinet just to display your D-day build. Now that's dedication.

Thanks Bish  ;

It's going to be my personal tribute and admiration for all those who served during WWII . It's only been the last three years where I started building kits prior to the Vietnam War . Stikpusher's Korean War Group build has been a lot of fun and I have learned a lot watching what the other guy's were building and all the history about different aircraft and armour .

My Knowledge about WWII is quite limited , other than what I've seen at the movies and on TV . So this will be a great opportunity for me to learn a whole lot more .

First thing this morning I started to unpack all the pieces of my new cabinet

The boxes must of weighed nearly 30kg each , way to heavy for me to try and carry up stairs to model aircraft heaven . So it was a couple of pieces at a time . I just had enough room to lay the sides down and start attaching all the screw connectors and such ;

Here's the finished cabinet ;

I decided to spend the remaining spare cash I had and bought a second display cabinet for other future builds ;

Two cabinets in one day was pretty good going I think and more importantly my injured wrist hasn't caused me any grief , so it looks like I have finally put that behind me for good .... Big Smile

That looks awesome John, it's worth joining the GB just to watch all that come together. And here I am complaining about the complexity of the Churchill's suspension!

I understand the red-brown was applied as an anti-corrosion measure for ships, I have no idea on a smaller vessel like a landing craft.

I managed a quick trip to ikea late this afternoon and bought the glass display cabinet and I'll start putting it together first thing in the morning .

I've been looking over the double page instructions for Mach 2's LCT-6 kit

They only mention using one colour through out and that's FS.35164 . Looking through my paint reference charts , there's a match to Gunze Acrylic H-42 'Blue Gray'

This seems to look more blue than gray and I found a web site on the net that has a finished LCT-6 Model that appears to have a similar blue gray overall finish

http://www.boystownmilitaryminiatures.com/MACH_2_172_ARMAGGEDON_LCT6_WW11_LANDING_CRAFT/p1144420_7013590.aspx

What do you guy's think and should there be some red-brown on the very lower section of the hull ?

John: Love how you never do anything small!!!

That's the understatement of the week. This is going to be some build. I recon it will take longer than the planning for D-day itself.

Well , I went to the hardware store yesterday afternoon to price all the pieces of timber I would need to make my little display cabinet . Everything started to add up to a few hundred dollars and at the same time I was looking at additional shelving board for a second cabinet as well . So now I'm thinking of going to Ikea where they have lot's of display cabinets available as 'flat packs' . I bought 3 cabinets last weekend for mum as an early mothers day present and put them together in a couple of hours and they look great .

Ikea web site has a glass display cabinet which is the perfect size for the area I was thinking of building mine

It's a little pricey but probably only $100 difference between me making two cabinets myself , one for the D-Day builds and the second one for other finished builds . I think one cabinet will serve both purposes and that nice big D-Day landing Craft poster will fit perfectly inside , pinned to the back .

The Ikea cabinet is 960mm wide and my wall space is 990mm wide ; Almost made to measure ...Stick out tongue

It will go where the bookshelf currently stands

So an ikea flat pack is the go !

I have no specific information there but I'd assume that if the Beaufighter and 'Sketter are painted with invasion stripes they were involved somehow.

I'm now thinking of making a dedicated D Day display cabinet for my Landing Craft . While looking around ebay I saw a 900mm X 600mm poster of the same pic I posted earlier of all those landing craft unloading troops and equipment on the beach at Normandy . I bought one of the posters and I look forward to it arriving in the mail .

I also was looking through my stash of Israeli kits as I remembered having a few WWII type kits put aside and I found a 1/72 Revell Bristol Beaufighter TF.X ;

The Revell kit doesn't come with D Day markings , however I did find an old unused Airfix TF.X Beaufighter decal sheet which has invasion stripes and the Airfix instruction sheet say's the Beaufighter is from the No.236 Squadron , RAF North Coats , June 1944

There's also a Airfix D.H. Mosquito NF. XIX with invasion stripes from RAF Swanington 1944 ;

Were either of these two aircraft part of the D Day aircraft invasion force ?

John, are you getting the jump on the rest of us lol. I would love to be able to do a base like for my ship's when I get round to them, but looks like you need some special tools for some of that. That's going to be an impressive build.

Tony, welcome aboard.

Hey Bish, make it an Academy Hawker Typhoon, in 1/72. Crossover for the 'Forces of Nature GB', please.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

I found this great photo on the net of some Landing Craft on D Day or a few days after

I also found a nice scale model of a Landing Craft Boat on a nice display base

I thought this looked to be a really great way of displaying the LCT Landing craft and I thought I might have a go at doing something similar .

I have some spare pine shelving board and some unused foot stool legs I can cut down for my base

I also have this profile cutter which fits into a router to cut a nice fancy edge around the board

I set up the little fold away bench vice outside as not to shower the garage with too much saw dust and carefully cut the edge of the board with the router , only cutting about 3-4mm at a time so not to burn or blunt the cutter by trying to cut everything in one go

I then cut the foot stool legs to my liking

Then I went and got Mach 2's LCT-6 hull and sat her on the display board to see how things might look

I think it looks okay , especially using material that's just sitting around the garage .

I also found Trumpeters 1/72 LCM Landing Craft kit in the stash and decided to make a smaller but similar base for it as well

I'll have to figure out how to make some name plates for the base . I have an engraver but my handwriting may not be neat enough but I could have a few practice goes on some scrap metal and see how things look

Anyway my wrist injury seems to be on the mend . There was no soreness after using the router , I guess using those hot and cold packs , Votaren Emugel and Thermoskin arm bandages might have worked .

Next I'll see what type of varnish I can find in the garage for my bases .

82nd airborne got shot up when they overflew the invasion fleet. all it takes is one gunner to open fire and everyone was antsy anyway. i think the british 1st airborne also took a bunch of freindly flak and released their gliders too soon with many crashing into the sea.

How long do we have to complete the kit/dio as I am in the GB Steel Cats and it is taking me a bit longer then usual due to all the awesome cats they have displayed (don't want mine to be lacking)

John:  Wow, nice project!  That's going to be some build.

Bish:  Better put me down for the  1/72nd Italeri C-47 in D-Day markings.  Getting parts for the diorama is practically impossible.  Ever look for US Infantry just marching, with rifles slung?  Hmm  Not in any scale I've found.  If I can locate certain items, I may do it, but at the moment I'm kinda stumped.  I may pick up one of the Waco gliders for the D-Day resupply missions to be towed by the C-47, but that's an "IF".

Hmmm I would get in on this as I want to do an FW-190A-8 in "Pips" Priller's colours. Not sure what kit yet but it will be in 1/72 scale. Will look for one this week-end and let tou know before the start date.

Bish: I asked Hans to put me down as a provisional here.

Well, I pulled out the AFV Club 1/35th Churchill Mk III AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) and it has decals for two D-Day vehicles so please put me down with her even though the crazy complex suspension system has me holding my head.
