Pearl Harbor '13 build thank you

Here are a series of shots of the finished build.  I had to manipulate them somewhat to bring out the details, otherwise, the photos came out a little on the dark side.

The "sea" is a temporary display base I made from cardboard, covered with crinkled aluminum foil; then painted with acrylic craft paints.  Over that, I sprayed some old Floquil Crystal Cote I had laying around.

I'm not sure after this that I enjoy PE details all that much.  They make things a little too fragile and hard to handle.  I didn't do any rigging between the two masts, because there isn't any other place by which to pick the ship up, without risking rails or anchors or some other obscure and vulnerable part.  But it was an experience, anyway.

Thanks, Joe, for hosting the build.  It was a good opportunity to restore the ship the cat ruined, and I'm glad I could participate.

Just a reminder for the rest of the group, I did make a GB badge I posted earlier someplace in the thread to commemorate participation, so anyone who'd like to use it, feel free.  It's nothing fancy, but it's there for remembrance and honoring the sacrifices on 7 December.

Looks great checkmate! I just got the USS Fletcher from Tamiya, I've never built a ship before so it will be a learning experience.

I hope you'll like and enjoy ship models.  I haven't built a destroyer yet, but I'm doing up CV-6 USS Enterprise, for the Hollywood group build now, and it will be the first Tamiya ship I've attempted.

Will you be building Fletcher for a group build?  I'd enjoy seeing your progress.

I understand Testors has brought out some WWII US Navy paint, but I haven't tried them.  WEM's Colourcoats handle just about the same as Testors MM, and are very good.

I wouldn't build it for a GB, it's not on the radar yet. I doesn't look too complicated. Eventually I'd like to model a bit of everything from World War 2. I herd the Fletcher was a good starter ship. Thanks for the help, I'll save those sites!

Paint came in yesterday, the tracking number never updated. I'll take pictures of the cockpit before I close it up today.

Quick update on my P-26 as I head out the door for a Turkey Trot. Wings are painted yellow (Tamiya rattle can) and the fuselage has been primed and the seam filled, sanded and re-primed (Mr Surfacer 1200). For only my third plane it came out pretty well. I hope to paint the fuselage tomorrow and possibly get final assembly done this weekend. I may be able to meet the deadline! Pictures will follow soon.

OK, now I'm having a change or heart with my original color scheme. Even though I rattle canned the wings yellow, now I'm thinking of scrapping it and going back with the OD/gray scheme that some have said was the proper scheme. I have the time to sand the wings and reprime. I figure I could then hit the panel lines with black to get some depth (something missing from the wings and something I have wanted to try). My question is what FS number should I reference for the gray? And what should I use to mask/define the color lines? I've seen modelers use something that looks like clay snakes?

Yeah, kind of a little late in the game to change it up, but...

CMK - Your USS New Orleans looks great. Job well done, and a fitting model for this GB.

PeteG- The clay snakes are 'Silly Putty' I think. We call it something else over here. It's good for applying camo patterns, and you can get a soft or hard edge depending on how you apply it. If you want a soft edge, make sure that your sausage is not push flat against the model. I can't quote you an FS number , sorry.

Here is an update on my F4F-3. I'm using Starfighter decal sheet 72-135 'Pearl Harbour Defenders'. I've converted the wings to F4F-3 configuration, no wing fold etc. I've sprayed some pre-shading, down I can spray the USN Blue-Gray (I'm using Model Master for this shade). I haven't started the prop or undercarriage, but I guess I can do them during drying time. The 6th is Friday so I'll need to be fairly efficient with my time to et the job done. One thing  Iwill comment on though, I'm spent my money on some Eduard canopy masks to save some time masking it up. They're designed for this kit but don't fit well. It's the only thing they had to get right. Enough said.

I also realised that I didn't post much info about the kit I used. This is the boxing, the wings are for an F4F-4, but it gives instructions to convert it to F4F-3 standard.

I just added a resin seat with belts this time, but the undercarriage bay is crying out for something to fill it.

I'll definitely save the decals for another time.

I did take pictures of the cockpit before I closed it up, just haven't put them on here. I may try getting new decals for this, not sure how the ones in the kit are going to hold up. Would anyone know of a good way I could mask the Circles on the wings and fuselage so I wouldn't have to use the decals?

well with the end rapidly approaching I want to thank all of you for taking this journey with me again.  for me this build is about remembering.  

pete sounds like a good plan.  for the gray I have used the rustoleum rattle can primer (gray) as well as model master neutral gray.  either works well but I don't have a number for it.  as for masking I have used tape, putty, wet newspaper, damp papertowel, and press and seal.  my go to is masking tape although all the folks that use "silly" putty have shown great results.

ww2psycho as for the decals what you could do is use the testor decal spray.  spray evenly over the sheet and let it dry out for a couple of days.  I have done this and the decals responded pretty well.  of course there are times when the decals just are too far gone.  as for spraying markings I have never had any luck with that.  seems I always get runs in the wrong places.

Wait I figured it out, I will do that and hopefully they will work. The decal page just looks like its turning a yellowish color.

Don't worry guys, I didn't forget about this one! I'm making steady progress on my Zero, but I just don't have the time to post pics. I'll post an update as soon as the wings are assembled...

I've always liked Wildcats; looking forward to your progress on this one.

I sprayed the WIldcat yesterday. I used MM USN Blue-Gray for the uppersurface and Humbrol 129 for the ANA 602 under surface. Preshaded it with black before I got started. Broke off the aerial as is my usual practice, but at least I spared the pitot !

My P-26 is sprayed and ready for decals. I hit it with MM Olive Drab and Neutral Gray on the underside. And of course, I too broke off BOTH aerials and the pitot tube. UGH! Oh well.

Before putting down the color I tried pre-shading with black for the first time. My hand wasn't too steady and I went a little too heavy with the color, but some still shows through and looks pretty good for a first try. After some clean up and retouching, I put down a coat of Future and will decal it tonight.

I do have photos and will upload them soon.

Anybody have any thoughts on what I should use for rigging?

I'll post all my work in progress pictures when I put my finished model up. Right now I'm waiting for some parts to try and I will put primer on it tonight before bed, paint it all tomorrow, Friday should be decals and then I'm done.

To anyone that has built the val, how do you attach the rear most cockpit canopy when in the open position? It says to put it at an angle but there is no place to glue it on the angled edges?

I can't help you with the Val, but here are my completed photos. I also used Microtube for the gun barrels. The last photo shows my two Peatl harbour builds together. I've almost settled on an SBD or P-36 if there is another one next year.

ww2psycho you may have to build up a hinge area.  i have only built up one val and it was a long time ago with the canopy closed.  

as we come to a close on the "official" time frame i look back and although it started rather slowly it sure has flourished in the last few weeks.  thank you all for that.  

i have updated the first page to reflect the recent completion.

7:40 am  183 japanese fighters, dive bombers, level bombers, and torpedo bombers from the first wave form up after what was termed the best launch yet north of kakhuku point.

7::49  the commander of the attack cmdr fuchida signals "to" meaning charge to the other aircraft.  the flight breaks up to begin attack runs.  

7:53 to 8:00  aircraft from the six carriers begin attacks on nas pearl harbor (ford island), hickam field, ewa marine air corps station, bellows field, wheeler field, kaneohe naval air station, and naval vessels and stations located in pearl harbor.

8:00 to 9:00 b-17c's and b-17e"s arrive from the us mainland and are attacked while trying to land at various fields.  

9:00 2 p-40"s piloted by 2lt whiteman and lt bishop are shot down after getting airborne.

9:05  four p-36"s led by 1lt sanders take flight, moments later another p-36  piloted by 2lt moore takes off.  he joins up with 2lt brown from haleiwa field

these are but a few of the aircraft that got airborne.  i have it written down but cant seem to find the estimated total sorties flown that morning.

11:00 cmdr fuchida makes his final flight over the destruction.  he leaves the area when he confirms he is the last plane to leave.
