Well the F-105 has wings now and painted the gear bays. The instructions called for the bays to be aluminum. However after doing some research Vietnam era F-105 bays should be yellow green. Here's a couple pictures.

Note the sliver paint on the fuselage. I use this kind of as a primer to find any seams. Fuselage fit is pretty good. The wing roots however are a different story and is going to take some careful sanding. Can't wait to paint the SEA paint scheme!

Nice work on the office KenYes

Haven't done much on my front this week. Glued the wings together and did a lot of test fitting. Surprised it seems like a well fitting kit, with not much filler needed. This is is going to be nice after my F-14 build. Which was a nightmare.

Thank you GreySnake for the compliment!

Well folks we are closing in on the "official" start of this group build!  Today however marks the 49th anniversary of the "second attack" of the "Tonkin Ghosts" (false radar images) that prompted the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in three days.

Real nice office ther Ken.  Looking like a short pilot could jump in and drive it all away.

Thank you Marty!  I appreciate your compliments!

Kiwi

Ken, the F4 is looking amazing! Do you have any detail images of your cockpit assembly? It looks fantastic in your test-fit pic. I think I may have seen some details in another thread, those ejection handles look familiar... Is that a resin cockpit detail set? I'm debating picking one up for my Skyraider as the stock cockpit is nothing special. The F104 may also need some additions. I bought a resin cockpit for my most recent Mosquito kit but didn't even use it as the Tamiya stuff included was so excellent and fit perfectly together. I'm still pretty rubbish at trimming down resin parts and really getting the most out of them.

I think I will have to make another field trip to the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH before I move away from Michigan. I have been twice in the last two years and still can't get enough! If anyone needs any photos of particular aircraft let me know and I'll take a bunch of pictures down there.

So true about the Vietnam veterans. It's been really interesting learning more about the war and the way that people were treated during, after and since. I've only been in the United States a little over three years so it's definitely been eye-opening. My "adopted" grandfather here in MI was a Marine in Vietnam and is the most wonderful gentleman. I've had so much fun going to airshows with him and learning all about his experiences and the men he served with, and also the horrible treatment they were often subjected to coming home.

Thank you for the compliments Kiwi!  Yes, I have been working on this F-4 for a good while.  It is definitely a labor of love!  The cockpit is resin and made by Aires.  And thank you for noticing the ejection seat handles.  I made those from scratch.  I also made the shoulder harness belts from scratch.

One thing to note is that it takes a lot of patience and work to make the darn thing fit!  Especially since I am also shoehorning into the same space the aftermarket Aires front wheel well and Verlinden avionics bay!

Here are some pictures of the cockpit:

Hi Marty,

So true about our Vietnam veterans!  And the sad part is not getting all of their stories documented in time!  My Dad was one of them too.  I heard some of the stories, but I wish I could have gotten the details written down while he was still alive.  He was taken away suddenly and those stories are now gone forever.

Great line up for your F-100C!  It is going to have some really nice detail!  I am looking forward to seeing you build it!

I must admit that I'm getting a bit excited to get started on this project. I am in the process of getting my butt whipped by a 1/72nd Whale for the US Carrier Aviation group build so this might be some good therapy when the stress of all that tiny crap gets to me.

Here is the collection so far. Note that I'm not doing the 9th AF  Firepower Team bird, I just picked those up because I'm sure I've got another C in my blood somewhere and they are super cool, got a couple of pics in the research docs of this specific aircraft.  Mine will be from the Colo ANG 35th TFW (VS) at Phan Rang in glorious SEA camo, with burned out paint on the backside. Haven't ordered the decals yet, but I about pulled the trigger today, but the cart was funked up at Roll Models.

From left to right: resin engine, new nose, early C cockpit, wheel bays and exterior PE.

Good looking start on the 105 GreySnake.  I need to get one of those in my stash for my century bird collection.

Kiwi, good on ya for getting out Boulder way. I'm a graduate from way back in the day, had a chance to go back for a business meeting last summer, it was just as I recalled. Even got to ride a skateboard from a very stunned college kid. It certainly brought back a bunch of memories.  Went to the Dark Horse for a couple of pitchers of beer, just like in the old days.

Since my last posting, I had a chance to talk at length with a gentleman who runs the Biet Dong Quan chapter of the 75th Ranger Regiment. After 40+ years of not really knowing what my dad did in the 'Nam, it turns out he was one of 2500 advisors who were liased to the Vietnamese Rangers or in Vietnamese, the Biet Dong Quan or BDQ. Really was an eye opener, as he said they were fearless, and in his words "I'd go to war with any of them, they were first rate soldiers."

Unfortunately these American heroes who fought in that far away place are passing on, and too many of our citizens don't know what sacrifices our military forces endure to protect our freedom.

Tal Afar Dave

I'd like to get in on this one, with a 1/48th scale Monogram F4 C/D, a Hawk/Testors O-2 Skymaster, and possibly a Monogram A-1H Skyraider.......Over a year, I should be able to produce something in that time period???

Welcome aboard Dave!  Welcome Sign

I have a few pictures of the O-2A Skymaster that I took at the USAF National Museum a couple of years ago.  (I need to go back!)  Here is one of them:

2022 New Year's Resolution:  Enter 1 group build and COMPLETE a build this year!!  Why Photobucket did you rob me of my one Group Build Badge???  Must be part of the strong anti-Monogram cartel!!!

Great work, Ken!

Wow, it's hard to believe it's been a year or more and your F-4 is finally going to be buttoned up Big Smile. I remember the first entry I read on  Berny's Memorial build was your fantastic work on the seat D-rings . Looking forward to seeing that bad boy standing on its feet!

Cheers,

Russ

Yes, it has been a long road.

Hi Everyone,

One more week until the "official" start of our group build!

Tonight I worked on the front end of my F-4E Phantom.  I have the Aires cockpit tub completed and fitted to the fuselage.  I also already have the Verlinden avionics bay completed and fitted to the fuselage.  So tonight I cleaned up the avionics bay top edge where the photo etch is supposed to attach.  I also put the all of the front pieces together so I could do a final test fit with the fuselage.

I found I still need to do some final preparation on the Aires front instrument panel to fit it to the cockpit tub and fuselage.  That will be tomorrow's project.

Looking good GreySnake! That's a sweet Tomcat in the back too!

Argh, the monthly model allowance, I've always spent mine by the 1st or 2nd of the month, I always manage to confuse the grocery and savings accounts for the hobby account too, strange how that happens, but I just really needed that 3rd identical mosquito kit! My wife doesn't understand why I need so many kits and parts stashed away in the collection when I can only work on a couple at a time... Like I said, she doesn't understand...

Hi Everyone!

Only 8 days until the "official" start of this group build.  Three days from today and it will be the 49th anniversary of the initial attack of the North Vietnamese gun boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.  Things are going to start heating up!

Russ thanks!

Ken, thank you also! The instrument panels were pretty easy. Tamiya XF-16 Aluminum dry brushed on and that's it. Looking forward to working on this guy some more tonight.

Ken, I went through the same thing with my dad also. So I can understand how it can be.

Also those RF-101 decals are so tempting. Now I really want a Voodoo! I've been trying to snag the Monogram one on ebay with no luck.

Thank you GreySnake!  Hey, that really bothered me about those decals for your F-105G so I haven't stopped looking.  I found some today on eBay.  The set is has markings for a F-105G called Bam Bam with a Shark mouth from the 388 TFW 561 TFS Korat AFB.  It is Microscale set 48-142.  It is listed with a "Buy It Now" for $14.99 with free shipping.  Here is the link:

Ken

Hey Ken! Thanks for finding those! Now I just have to hope no one buys them for the next couple days. I blew my modeling budget this monthCrying And have to wait for the funds to be replenished.

Anyway started working on the old F-105 today so far so good. Here's some pictures of the office.

I decided to add the pilot and the electronic warfare officer. I don't think they turned out half bad. After not painting a figure in three years. These pictures were taken before they were fully finished.

This is the third F-105 I've built so far. And have forgotten how big the airplane is. Here's a picture next to an F-14 I just finished.

Next up I'll airbrush the gear bays and start putting it together!

Wow, nice work GreySnake!  That looks great!  Yes  Yes  Great work dry brushing the instruments on the cockpit!

I finally heard back from Eduard on those exhaust nozzles.  They are sending me new replacements.  So we will see how long it takes to reach here.

Hi, Ken,

Glad you were finally able to cross that threshold. Not much we can say to ease your pain; only time can reduce the hurt. Hang in there, bud. The pictures sound great! Post some copies on the thread when you feel up to it.

Cheers,

Russ

Thank you Russ.  I will post some pictures when I have them hanging up!  Smile
