Jack, thanks very much for the advice. I will try it out at the weekend. I will practice on the inside of the cape first to get the right balance.

I know what you mean about the light at this scale. I can't recall who it was now, but someone posted pics of a completed darth a few months back. I asked how they did the body suit and they said just semi gloss black. I was sure there must have been more to it. But now I have done mine, I can see it, even with the poor light in my shed. Its certainly different from 35th scale figures.

That's really bad news about your build. But having seen you work, I know you can make a great job of it.

GMorrison - interesting link.  Are you saying you were a portrait artist at one time?

Yes, ochre and other earth tones is what the old masters used on canvas to create skin tones, there was no pre-made skin coloured paint back then  -lol.

I occasionally paint (write is the orthodox term) icons.

I got the first coat of gloss black on vadar, doing to do the second coat later tonight and then will get some pics tomorrow before I try out Jack's idea. I am using Tamiya Acrylics, and for some reason the gloss is not looking very glossy. I may end up giving it a gloss varnish, I will see after the second coat.

Bish & Shiv: Sounds good, looking forward to more photos.

And I hope Conan is coming along there Tim.

I airbrushed the highlights to the red area of  Picard's tunic last night. All major paintwork is done, I'm working on the faces now and cleaning up mistakes. I still need to do a little more research on the Romulan's harness and a few other detail parts. Haven't done any work on the bases for either though. The disruptor still hasn't showed up, I'm wondering if I can get one scratchbuilt by the end of the GB>

I got Nemo's suit pretty much painted. I'm trying to get a sort of natural latex look.

His gloves and boots are primed, I'm going to go back and shade them a little and make the weighted slippers gloss. The model needs to have some attachment added for those. In the movie it looks like black straps.

The helmet is a whole other story. It needs to have the headlamp and all of the other fittings attached before I paint it.

Then there's the tanks and the rifle...

Tim...there are that many different Supermans?!  Good night!  Where have I been?

I, too was rather surprised when I started hunting for a "look" for my Man of Steel as to how many different treatments there had been over the decades. I've seen most of the movies and some of the animateds over the years, but I hadn't seen a comic book since the '60s, much less a graphic novel. A dizzying variety to choose from.

I finally decided to sort of mix and match. I'm going for sort of the retro feel of the '40s Max Fleischer animated version (that would be #3 in the chart Tim so thoughtfully included--I always liked the darker blue costume rather than the powder blue version, and it works with the kit's short cape and somewhat less-steroidal physique, compared to more recent depictions). But I opted to use the yellow belt and the red and yellow "S" reminiscent of "my generation's" Superman, George Reeves.

GMorrison - Nemo's looking sharrrp!

GMorrison....Nemo is looking great!  Great detail work and great subject!

GregBale...well I think you have done a smashing (in reference to your masonry work!) job!  I think you have picked the perfect Superman, and like i mentioned, your masonry work is awesome!

It's been raining, in fact 12" since Friday morning. This is really welcome news, but it means no painting this weekend, and Nemos suit is curing very slowly.

So I've switched gears and gone to work on his gear.

The castings for the rifle, tanks and so forth are really poor. It's in contract to the figure himself, which is pretty well done.

First, the back pack. It's comprised of a pair of tanks and a regulator casing on top. The casing has a pair of quarter round shoulders and a screen center section. I was at CVS getting something else so I cruised the aisles and grabbed a set of plastic measuring spoons.

Then over to Ace and picked out some water pipe fittings.

The tanks in the movie are silver, but I really like the looks of the copper...

The small tank on his chest...

And the rifle. This thing really needs help. But there's a company on the net that sells full sized replicas made from the original props as patterns, so I've got some good detail. Plan to go a little nuts here...

GMacGyver - 12" since Friday? In the words of Ted "Theodore" Logan, whoa. That would put a dampener on painting. Heh, see what I did there? Dampenerr? <sigh> He who would pun would pick a pocket ...

Nice find with the spoons. Something I don't have that a lot of you guys do is the ability to walk into a store, see something, and recognize it for a missing part. I'm so "inside the box" when it comes to building models.

And just in case you wanted some inspiration beyond what you've found specific to Nemo, I love this site: Dr. Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators. I'd have to sell my son to afford one of the ray guns, but the whole site is fun to poke around in.

well after a bit of work today I'm calling Iron man done. Happy with it in the end after all the work with the Allclad candy red I was a little worried about adding some weathering in the end with a bit of work and actual spit (on a cotton bud to take some of the weathering off)

Picture below for the wall and comments, happy to hear from everyone

Below is one without all the lights so you can see the lights

Well, I think I figured out what the problem was with the gloss paint. I found a post on here where someone was having a similar problem. It was pointed out that cold and damn can cause gloss paint to come out matt. As I only started painting out of the house last summer, this isn't an issue I have come across before. And it is cold and certainly damp here. So, I resorted to painting the gloss with a brush (o the horror) and I am really pleased with how its come out, especially the helmet.

Next up, I am going to try Jack's suggestion for the cape and start the detailed painting.

GM, good idea for the tank, and I agree about the copper rather than silver.

Phil, amazing work on Iron Man. Love the paint job, that's really come out nice.

Wonderful work, guys.

Darth is looking pretty sinister, I'd say. Black on black is fun to do.

Iron Man- unreal paint work there.

Tim- thanks for the link. "Pleasingly violent fireballs" can be a good thing.

GMorrison - I know the helmet has just the initial coat of paint, but that particularly is looking smart.  Also, great resourcefulness on you part in replacing the kit items.

P Mitch - a striking finish to Ironman, it really looks great! Yes

Bish - good job with hand brushing the gloss, and hope things turn out well with Vader's cape.

----------------------------------

Red Sonja is still not back to the point she was, but the basic skin tones are now filled in.

1.) For the sort of pre-shading step, I kept things simple and just used an existing shade of green, Vallejo Olive Grey 70888.  After an overall coat, mixed in some white and sprayed mainly from over head angles.  Some further white and another round of spraying.  Did hand paint some lighter tones on the face, but not too much as it would be covered later with proper flesh tones.

2.) I had been using Brown Sand 70876 as the base skin colour, which is what is seen here.  Close inspection though showed specs of dust had been trapped in the paint, so after sanding them off, had to go to step 3.

3.) Mixing new paint, so used a combination of Red Leather 70818 and Green Ochre 70914.  Second round of spraying, base colour is lightened with Basic Skintone 70815.  This was followed with an even lighter application by mixing in white.

regards,

Jack

Thanks for your comments. Your work on Red Sonia is amazing I'd love to be able to get that skin tone you have, one of the reasons I stay away from figures is getting the skin right

Now he's starting to look like a Dark Lord of the Sith. Nice brush work. I have always had trouble brush-painting gloss.

Tim

Battle damage was easier than I thought in the end. As it was all sealed with Alclad gloss I added dots of Tamiya paint with black gray and silver, almost dry brushing it on. When it had dried a little I took a moist cotton bud and just rubbed at the Tamiya paint. It came of easily but left the scuffed look I was after. Have to say it was all helped buy the Alclad gloss being so smooth.

Thanks guys.

I was a bit concerned about painting the gloss, especially as it was Tamiya Acrylics. But I had sprayed 2 coats first and I made sure it was pretty thin, so I think that helps.

I think it will be the weekend before I can try adding Jacks idea to the cape. My big 88 is now in the shed being sprayed, and its hard enough for me to get in there, let alone Darth, so I will concentrate on the detail painting.

Yes Tim, the rumors of my 31-flavor demise have been greatly exaggerated. Wink

Wow fellas!  Those completed builds look amazing!   ....and the works still in progress......I've got me some serious catching up to do.  Just beautiful stuff !!

Been fighting the Predator the past few weeks on & off.  The casting, upon much closer inspection, looks a lot more like a re-casting, and not a very good one, especially around the head area.  Lots of pinholes. resin blobs everywhere (the dremel got it's best workout in years), and short shots on his "dreadlocks" that I needed to complete with sections made from epoxy putty.  A lot of filler (putty and white glue) seem to have smoothed things out a bit, but this is probably going to be one of those "one and a half foot" models when done. I'll be getting some primer on 'em later today and hopefully get some pics up.

I'll tell ya, this kit really had me considering boxing it up in favor of a different Predator kit, but every one I saw, well, the poses were just either too static or too generic, so I'm sticking with this guy.

Here ya go .......this is where he stands at the moment fellas.  The twin-bladed gauntlet on his right hand and the left hand with the retractable lance are primed as well, but not attached yet.
