Actually, I think every ship builder paints and builds a bit differently.  In this case, I am going to paint the decks first and then paint the structures on the deck next since it is easier to mask a horizontal surface than a vertical.

Once those are painted then the hull colors will be painted on the lower hull and the flying deck.  After those dry then I'll add weathering to everything.  After this I'll go ahead and glue the flying deck to the main deck.  At this point, all the superstructure and turrets will be built and glued on.  I plan on replacing the masts with brass rod since the plastic masts won't take a strain, even with EZ line.

Since I normally rig sailing ships, this will be rather mundane except that I have never used EZ line before.

Ye, I guess its like any other model and working out what's best for you. I just look at some of these ship models and my first thought is, where do you start. But I guess coming from sailing ships, the modern ones are rather un cluttered.

Shot some Testors flat lacquer to kill the Future gloss for the Jasta 29 fuselage markings. The Lozenge was a bit of a challenge cause those decals are over 25 years old and were very delicate. I had to use several craft acrylic colors to custom blend matching shades to touch up some decal parts that were either too short  or just flaked after applying.

The bottom 1/8th trailing edge had to be painted to complete the pattern.

The scratch built cockpit improves the looks of this old Aurora/Monogram kit.

This one is done and will probably jump in again with something else.

Great looking fighter, I really love the green and yellow colors.  I would like to see a F16 painted in that detail sitting on the tarmac at Lackland AFB.

Getting' tough to keep up with you guys.

A bit more done.  I don't see how glue would ever hold the control surfaces in place so I drilled and pinned them and they are nice and secure.  The bottom wing has the cockpit floor panted as wood but it is barely visible. 

There are 2 options for the center section of the upper wings.  Some “Harry's” had clear cellon over the center.  And some of these where painted over. The kits come with types of center sections, 1 in gray plastic and the other in clear.  I am wondering if here was a version of the model that was planned to use the clear parts since none of the schemes in the kit have it other than being painted over.  And the internal stuff to assemble the wings is wrong to be seen through the clear.  I roughed the surface with a Scotch Brite pad to give it some tooth for the paint.  And then the upper wind ready to go.

Guys, very impressive work,  everyone is bringing their A game to this one.  Congrats to those completed so far:

plasticjunkie - great job with the lozenge decals, and that scratch build cockpit looks pro.

rocker - sweet work on the Nieuport, stunning colours.   Is that a magazine cover on the upper wing surfaces?

falconmod - another fine Albatros added to your collection.   Long and delicate decals like that dragon aren't easy, but you got it on perfectly.

Rob - that Roland,  she's a show stopper.  Everything looks impeccable, and that fuselage wood work is first-class. 

Doug - the DVII simply brilliant.   Maybe not as colourful, but those b/w stripes are still just as eye-catching, if not more.

Hope I got everyone's finished builds.  If I missed someone, let me know.

My plan is still to do a bust for this one, but with all the fine work here representing aircraft, it's hard to resist and not join in with a bipe of some kind.

pj - just amazing work on the D.VII !  Hard to tell there were any issues with the build at all.  That cockpit is  awesome - some serious scratchbuilding skills on display there! Can't wait to see what you come up with for an encore.

rocker - Your first entry into the world of WWI bipes is an absolute joy to look at!  Love the camo work especially and I'm happy that you found the rigging a fairly easy go.  Good stuff man!

Marc - as usual, just jawdropping work on the 'Tate.  This one's gonna be fun to watch! 

Nice to see that the ship guys are still around too.  That is some intricate work we're seeing!

Work has been progressing steadily on the Roland and I'm liking what I see so far. No issues - just a pleasure to build.  The 'pit is almost done - tried a few techniques new to me and pulled 'em off OK.  Should have some pics up soon.

A bit of progress...

While the lower wing and engine cowl panels were curing I started in on the guns.  Added the rear braces and made the cables out of twisted .003 wire.  A small ring made from lead wire was added to the part where the cable wraps around since it is actually a pulley and the kit part was flat. 

And what it will look like when mounted.

wingnut - thanks! This definitely won't be the last WWI warbird I put together- not to mention a few 1930's bipes I have lurking in my stash- an He-51 is in there somewhere...

jgeratic- Those are actually Liberty Bond posters! They give it a nice nostalgic touch I think!

ruddratt- Glad you dig the camo - I am getting better at mixing colors...the majority of them were either lighter or darker shades that I played around with to get the most accurate color possible - cant wait to see shots of your Roland!

There's some fantastic work going on in here! Every single model you guys are building looks absolutely perfect!

OK, it's not a lot of paint but it's that, "Ahhh, finally sprayed some paint." milestone.  Masking that engine and the pipes was... interesting

One photo in the WNW instruction book show the early LG that has a metal frame and wooden fairing being wrapped with cloth to hold it together.  Dunno if this is the standard method or was unique to that bird but I've taken a bot if license and tried to reproduce that.  After trying several much thinner materials and it tearing with every wrap I ended up with Tamiya tape.  Lead wire was used for the elastic cord around the axles.

And lastly the prop.  I forgot to add some japan Dryer to the oil so I hope this dries by the time the build is done.

Wingnut... all I can say is WOW! Amazing amount of detail so far and you still have a bit to do. Again...WOW!
