That 110 mile commute would suck. Mine is only about 20 miles,but it is in and out of the section of the city that has the most commercial and industrial businesses.  Traffic is always bad! It's just annoying to add this onto an already long day.

Jim, sometimes our priorities get confused but spending time with a buddy and/or model building certainly rate higher than being in traffic on your way to work!

Without going into too much boring detail, my medical issue concerns some inflammation in the gut area that won't require hospitalization but will mean some meds and diet awareness long-term. As promised some pics. More to follow as time allows

Very nice, Mike! I think if you changed that first photo to black and white and added a few scratches and blemishes to the photo, you'd be hard pressed to say it's not real.

Hope you get over that problem with your gut real soon.

Ken, I wondered if you might be able to help me: do you know what color the wheel bays on you dad's RF-101's might have been painted? The kit instructions only called for Lt. Grey- nothing specific. Now I find references that they may have been some shade of green. I know the doors are red, and assume that all the versions would be the same. If this is so, then it's going to be interesting trying to change the nose gear bay with its molded in doors and installed gear.

Hey gang!

Though slow, some work has been done on the Voodoo. Finished the panel lines and installed the front windscreen:

Some of those smudges will be cleaned up.

Installed the intake splitter. I haven't quite figured what to do with that spot light next to the second-seater.

A also painted the anti-glare area in front of the windscreen. Found Testors has a bunch of new little paints in their Hobby Enamel line, and I found there was a semi-gloss black. I think it's perfect for this application. The nose will get more of the same.

Those sensors on the sides are way out of scale and thick, but oh well, it's an OOB build....

I'm not real sure how to treat that glass sensor on the top. Kit says silver and I think that would look too unrealistic. Again, I don't want to go crazy with this build, so I thought I might leave it black and coat it with a couple of layers of clear....

Thanks for the comments guys. As I mentioned I will get a few more taken after a final touch up. This build was OOB so some items like the tip lights were not exactly to scale but I left them as they were. Just wanted a no-frills relaxing build. That's also why I kept the paint chips to a minimum. Although this kit is an older one I thought the panel lines etc. were pretty good especially around the engine nacelles and flight controls. I will get a decent 3/4 shot similar to the one in the dirt as my final one for the wall Ken.

According to one "in detail & scale" book by Bert Kinzey, the wheel wells were painted Insignia White (FS 17875) except a note says that "On all F-101B aircraft that we have seen, the interiors of the wheel wells were painted green (approximately FS 34258).  Too bad my Dad is not still alive to ask him.  He was a crew chief on both the F-101B and the RF-101C.

Great job on the wash!!  It really makes those panel lines pop!   

I hate to bring this up, but the anti-glare finish on the top of the nose in front of the cockpit should be green.  I cannot find the FS color of the green, but here is a picture of a RF-101C which has the same color green:

Sadly Ken, there are several people we wish were still around and we could ask them things...

But anyway, this was some very helpful information! I was searching for references and it seemed that many of the photos were from units in museums - and they were suspect, because it was obvious that they had been painted with a spray can. Plus it seemed that there was a wide variation in shades.

This ones from Prime Portal and who can say what the original color was?

Testors does have that color available and with some 300 bottles of paint, you would think I would have it. Not in this case, though....

I got it all ready, but when I reached for the paint, I found it had gone bad! It had skinned over and turned to putty. You know how it is once the bottle has been opened enough times and exposed to air once too often. Fortunately, I had another bottle-only to discover some IDIOT had left the cap unscrewed and the paint was solid!

If only there were 24-hour hobby shops!

I first thought that now, it was wait for the weekend and make a 60 mile round trip to Colpars, or just order some from Sprue Brothers and shell out $7 in shipping. I also ordered the green Ken mentioned in an earlier post. Hopefully, SB will get them to me by Friday or it will be a long weekend! Usually they are pretty quick at shipping....

Man Jim, that really sucks!  I know what you mean though.  I have a ton of paint on my shelves as well, and it always seems that the color I need is not there.  And I have reached for a jar only to find it just as you described.  Quite annoying when you think you have everything you need and only to find it is junk.

That is one thing about Sprue Brothers.  If they have it in stock, they ship it pretty quick.  There is a good chance you will get it by Friday.

So where do you live?  Indianapolis is only an hour's drive from Lafayette, Indiana.

I used to go to the Indianapolis 500, but since I do not follow the entire season, not knowing the drivers made it a little boring.  I did however always go to the Brickyard 400 (NASCAR) until just a few years ago.  We had season tickets to some of the best seats.

Hi Ken, I actually live in Memphis, TN area so it's about 7.5 hrs. drive for me to Indy but as I say I stay at my brother's place which is in the North West corner of Indianapolis in Pike Township. I try to keep up with the Indy Car racers just so I know who's who. I have grown to enjoy the race very much over the past few years and the skill it takes to drive in that style of car; not much room for error!

Hi Jim,

My new carpet for the basement arrived at the store Friday.  That means the installer will be calling me Tuesday or Wednesday to setup a date and time to install it.  I am hoping it will be done by this Friday.  That will give me next weekend to finish putting my basement back together.  Right now my house is a complete mess with all of the stuff from the basement shoved into every nook and cranny, including my workbench area.  It will be nice to be able to get back to building once the basement is done.

I punched it into my Garmin GPS and I see it is a trip of 519 miles and 7 hours 40 minutes from here. I want to do a real vacation as I haven't had one on probably 10 years or more, and this seems one that would be worth doing!

Only problem is: What else do you do in Ogden, Utah? Visit Mormon temples?

Yes, that is a great looking F-101B!  And I think I see an F-106 in the background.  It looks like they have some very nice aircraft there.

Because this day is Memorial Day, I would like to give a small story about my Dad, who served over half is USAF career in Vietnam.

My Dad had a few different jobs while serving in the USAF.  One that he performed the longest was as a flight engineer on the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter.  The duties of the flight engineer include monitoring all of the aircraft's systems while in flight.

This story is about one mission while he was the flight engineer in charge as a C-141 was preparing to land.  The co-pilot was flying the aircraft with the pilot overseeing the co-pilot.  As my Dad was going through the check list, he discovered that one of the main landing gear had not fully extended and locked.  He reported this immediately to the co-pilot.  My Dad proceeded with troubleshooting the problem and kept reporting the results to the co-pilot.

The co-pilot continued with the landing, making his final approach to the runway.  My Dad continued with his troubleshooting, still reporting the results to the co-pilot.  Unbelievably, the co-pilot continued with the landing and just as the wheels were about to touch, the pilot took over control of the aircraft.  The plane skidded all over the runway as you can imagine.  The pilot did a fantastic job of keeping the aircraft on the runway until it came to a stop.

After the plane stopped, the pilot turned to the co-pilot and asked him, "Were you not listening to the flight engineer?"  The co-pilot's response was "He was making so much noise on the microphone that I turned him off."

Unbelievable but true!

No problem Cliff. One quick way to tell them apart is the intakes. They are farther back on the F-106. On the F-102 they start beside the cockpit.
