I just got done watching "Memorial Day" again.  If you have not seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it.  It has become a tradition for me to watch each year on Memorial Day weekend.  Great movie, good acting and directing.

Jusr added something to my "bucket list". I was searching for pictures of Voodoos and ran across this one from airliners.net:

Talk about a lot of time spent on preserving and displaying an aircraft! This is at Hill Airforce base in Ogden, Utah. Looking over their website, there would be a lot there to see! I punched it into my Garmin GPS and I see it is a trip of 519 miles and 7 hours 40 minutes from here. I want to do a real vacation as I haven't had one on probably 10 years or more, and this seems one that would be worth doing!

Only problem is: What else do you do in Ogden, Utah? Visit Mormon temples?

Hi Jim,

My new carpet for the basement arrived at the store Friday.  That means the installer will be calling me Tuesday or Wednesday to setup a date and time to install it.  I am hoping it will be done by this Friday.  That will give me next weekend to finish putting my basement back together.  Right now my house is a complete mess with all of the stuff from the basement shoved into every nook and cranny, including my workbench area.  It will be nice to be able to get back to building once the basement is done.

Got my paints Friday, but didn't do anything until late Saturday. Slept half the day, then did the domestic thing the rest of the day. With all the rain lately, the lawn looked like a jungle. We are supposed to have one more day of rains, then it's finally supposed to dry put some. All week it's been rain, hail, thunderstorms, funnel clouds, unconfirmed tornadoes, flooding- we have had enough! With the devastating floods we had last year, everybody is just plain nervous!

The paint and also a few more pitot tubes for future Phantom projects.

I sprayed one gear bay to test it-looks very pea-green.

I have also been poking around with Academy's A-10. I am toying with the idea of adding this Master Model set:

Looks cool, but has to be tiny to the point of insanity!

Great job on the wheel bay Jim!  Looks really nice!     

That Model Master set looks pretty cool too!  I agree, at 1/72 scale that has to be super intense!

Hi Ken, I actually live in Memphis, TN area so it's about 7.5 hrs. drive for me to Indy but as I say I stay at my brother's place which is in the North West corner of Indianapolis in Pike Township. I try to keep up with the Indy Car racers just so I know who's who. I have grown to enjoy the race very much over the past few years and the skill it takes to drive in that style of car; not much room for error!

Three out of four were useless.  Ordered what I needed from squadron and it should be here tomorrow. I will be leaving Fri. to go to my brother's place and catch the Indy 500 on Sunday. I never really followed it much before my brother moved up there and started going every year but now I love it plus the abundance of attractive scantily clad women make it that much better! It's become something of a ritual each year and a great opportunity to see my relatives as well. Needless to say no modeling will be happening for the next week or so but will be waiting for me right where I left off. That being said, I hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday week end and no one's stuck working.

So where do you live?  Indianapolis is only an hour's drive from Lafayette, Indiana.

I used to go to the Indianapolis 500, but since I do not follow the entire season, not knowing the drivers made it a little boring.  I did however always go to the Brickyard 400 (NASCAR) until just a few years ago.  We had season tickets to some of the best seats.

Mike: That's some beautiful work there! Always liked the lines of the Dinah and you've done a great job.

Jim: Nice work there too. And I know what you mean about paint. Nearest hobby shop to here is also a little more than a 60 mile round trip and he closes at six or so on weekdays so Saturday is the only day I can ever make it over there.

Drat! Darn and double booger! One of those nights! I have a couple of spots I want to clean up near the intakes, and re-shoot some paint there! I got it all ready, but when I reached for the paint, I found it had gone bad! It had skinned over and turned to putty. You know how it is once the bottle has been opened enough times and exposed to air once too often. Fortunately, I had another bottle-only to discover some IDIOT had left the cap unscrewed and the paint was solid!

If only there were 24-hour hobby shops!

I first thought that now, it was wait for the weekend and make a 60 mile round trip to Colpars, or just order some from Sprue Brothers and shell out $7 in shipping. I also ordered the green Ken mentioned in an earlier post. Hopefully, SB will get them to me by Friday or it will be a long weekend! Usually they are pretty quick at shipping....

Man Jim, that really sucks!  I know what you mean though.  I have a ton of paint on my shelves as well, and it always seems that the color I need is not there.  And I have reached for a jar only to find it just as you described.  Quite annoying when you think you have everything you need and only to find it is junk.

That is one thing about Sprue Brothers.  If they have it in stock, they ship it pretty quick.  There is a good chance you will get it by Friday.

Ken, I wondered if you might be able to help me: do you know what color the wheel bays on you dad's RF-101's might have been painted? The kit instructions only called for Lt. Grey- nothing specific. Now I find references that they may have been some shade of green. I know the doors are red, and assume that all the versions would be the same. If this is so, then it's going to be interesting trying to change the nose gear bay with its molded in doors and installed gear.

According to one "in detail & scale" book by Bert Kinzey, the wheel wells were painted Insignia White (FS 17875) except a note says that "On all F-101B aircraft that we have seen, the interiors of the wheel wells were painted green (approximately FS 34258).  Too bad my Dad is not still alive to ask him.  He was a crew chief on both the F-101B and the RF-101C.

Sadly Ken, there are several people we wish were still around and we could ask them things...

But anyway, this was some very helpful information! I was searching for references and it seemed that many of the photos were from units in museums - and they were suspect, because it was obvious that they had been painted with a spray can. Plus it seemed that there was a wide variation in shades.

This ones from Prime Portal and who can say what the original color was?

Testors does have that color available and with some 300 bottles of paint, you would think I would have it. Not in this case, though....

Hey gang!

Though slow, some work has been done on the Voodoo. Finished the panel lines and installed the front windscreen:

Some of those smudges will be cleaned up.

Installed the intake splitter. I haven't quite figured what to do with that spot light next to the second-seater.

A also painted the anti-glare area in front of the windscreen. Found Testors has a bunch of new little paints in their Hobby Enamel line, and I found there was a semi-gloss black. I think it's perfect for this application. The nose will get more of the same.

Those sensors on the sides are way out of scale and thick, but oh well, it's an OOB build....

I'm not real sure how to treat that glass sensor on the top. Kit says silver and I think that would look too unrealistic. Again, I don't want to go crazy with this build, so I thought I might leave it black and coat it with a couple of layers of clear....

Great job on the wash!!  It really makes those panel lines pop!   

I hate to bring this up, but the anti-glare finish on the top of the nose in front of the cockpit should be green.  I cannot find the FS color of the green, but here is a picture of a RF-101C which has the same color green:

Thanks for the comments guys. As I mentioned I will get a few more taken after a final touch up. This build was OOB so some items like the tip lights were not exactly to scale but I left them as they were. Just wanted a no-frills relaxing build. That's also why I kept the paint chips to a minimum. Although this kit is an older one I thought the panel lines etc. were pretty good especially around the engine nacelles and flight controls. I will get a decent 3/4 shot similar to the one in the dirt as my final one for the wall Ken.

jelliott,, great news on the airbrush. Not sure if you mentioned it before but what color scheme will you be doing on the Phantom?

Jim, sometimes our priorities get confused but spending time with a buddy and/or model building certainly rate higher than being in traffic on your way to work!

Without going into too much boring detail, my medical issue concerns some inflammation in the gut area that won't require hospitalization but will mean some meds and diet awareness long-term. As promised some pics. More to follow as time allows

Very nice, Mike! I think if you changed that first photo to black and white and added a few scratches and blemishes to the photo, you'd be hard pressed to say it's not real.

That 110 mile commute would suck. Mine is only about 20 miles,but it is in and out of the section of the city that has the most commercial and industrial businesses.  Traffic is always bad! It's just annoying to add this onto an already long day.

Jelliott58: That's some great customer service! And good luck with the new airbrush- always takes some practice with me to work the new one in.

Jim: Hate to say this but there's always time for modeling but only so much to catch up with old friends- take every chance you get.

Great news about getting your replacement parts, Jell. It's amazing the company was willing to do that. Good luck with your F-4G project.

Hey all, I'm still here.  I've had a lot of different things going on lately that has kept me away from touching any of my projects.  I am happy to announce that I finally received my replacement sprue tree from Hasegawa for the F-4G, so now I can get back on track with that.  Hopefuly I can get to trying out the new airbrush I picked up recently.  This is going to be a new venture to me so here's crossing my fingers I get it fiqured out.

Congrats on both the replacement part and also the airbrush! Forgive my poor memory, but was this airbrush an upgrade or a first time purchase?

It does seem that this thing called life keeps distracting us from our real tasks of building models. For me, after they cut our hours a few weeks back, just like that I am back to working 10-11 hr days. Then adding in commute time, it makes for a very long day. When I did sit to work on the Voodoo, I was usually too tired when I was done to photograph and post my progress. I am making some progress, though slowly.

Last weekend I had some stuff working on my mind and accomplished little, though I did make it outside to do some yard work. Believe it or not, I do enjoy it. This weekend I went out of town to visit my buddy and get some fishing in. Fishing was bad, but it didn't matter as I it was a chance to hook up with the guy I have known for 35+ years and is pretty much the brother I never had. The bad thing is it is a about a 260 mile round trip, and can be a bit tough on the wallet.... It seems that i usually end up going out his way as it's tough for him to get away with his own wife and family where he is at, and I have no family to speak of....

Besides, the fishing opportunities are pretty good where he is at, although you couldn't tell by our results this time.

I can sympathize with you on those long comutes, Jim. I drove a 110 mile round trip for 5 years. Once you get home, you don't feel like doing much of anything. Glad you had a chance to see your friend and get in some fishing. Even if you didn't catch much, you had a chance to relax and enjoy his company.

Uncanny how we all agree on this one! Great point Cliff about the importance of allowing different opinions without censuring others. Why must so many demand others agree with them; is a difference of opinion that threatening? I'm pretty sure man alone is not responsible for any climate change world wide anymore than man can solve the supposed dilemma alone. Seems hubristic and narrow-minded to me. Anyhow, I have completed my airplane for this GB and will post pics very soon. I've been having some medical issues unrelated to my ankle burn, which thankfully, is almost fully recovered and so have fallen somewhat behind in the model building scene. Regardless,that won't stop me from participating in our group discussions and keeping up on everyone's progress. Going to do a little reading now; doing some research on late model Bf-109's for my next project. Enjoy the rest of your weekend guys!

Sorry to hear you're having additional medical problems, Mike. Hope it's nothing serious. It's good hear the ankle is doing well. Will be looking forward to those pictures.

I won't weigh in on the global warning issue. True or not, we will just have to hang on and see where the future takes us.

Very glad to hear you got to spend some quality time with your friend.  Even though the fish weren't biting, at least you still enjoyed yourself.

I know what you mean about life getting in the way.  I am still dealing with recovering from my basement flood in addition to taking care of two houses.  I did manage to get the cable company's modem replaced with my own this weekend.  I will be returning theirs today.  That in combination of turning off my phone service should take my monthly bill down around $40.00 a month.
