Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for the well wishes for my Mom.  I really do appreciate them!

My Mom is back home!  She is feeling much better now.  It is a very good thing.

Ken

Great to hear that, Ken! Please give her our best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hi Everyone,

I just learned that my good friend, Don James, passed away yesterday from lung cancer.  It is a very sad day.  He was the best part of the IPMS meetings.  The world has just lost a really nice guy.

Just as a reminder, Don was the pilot for the "Hoosier Hotshot" that I am building.  He also flew several other planes, including the U-2 Dragon Lady and the SR-71 Blackbird.

He will be sorely missed.

I had a similar experience as well. It seems often times unless you nag the heck out of them you're forgotten; the squeaky wheel gets the grease. As far as the docs go I respect the amount of school and challenges they face but too often the systems creates frankensteins by treating them as infallible gods. I'm not suggesting it's easy work but a little humility and the willingness to LISTEN to the patient would go a long way. Just my opinion...

In unrelated news; great job on the models as always, thanks for the kind words on my tank and most importantly I wish your mom a speedy recovery Ken!

10-4 on that Mike!! I agree with everything you just said.

Son Of Medicine Man

Hi Everyone,

Here is an update on my Mom.  It is looking like it may be a tumor instead of a stroke.  But they cannot tell for sure.  They said that we will have to wait a month and perform another MRI to see.

After spending the entire day with her, I was only home for a couple of hours when she called me from the hospital.  Apparently she was finding it hard to breath, and she had pressed the nurse call button but no one was responding.

I had to drive back to the hospital to kick some ass!  They finally did an x-ray on her lungs and found out she is coming down with pneumonia.  You have to watch everything that happens in a hospital!  Never take anything as status quo.

Ken

Definitely keep after them! These Doctors are not the Gods they sometimes act like!!

One year, we took Mom to the ER because she was dropping weight like crazy, and her pulse was over 200! She literally could not sit still!

The first Doctor came with her diagnosis: "Your mother is a drug addict." I told her to leave and get another Doctor to look at Mom.

The second doctor came in, looked at her and said, "Your mother is having a thyroid storm!" He got her into immediate treatment as she was in danger of having a heart attack. Within a day, she was in surgery to have a part of her thyroid gland removed. Normally they would treat with radioactive iodine- the thyroid absorbs it and some of the cells are killed. That treatment would have taken to long and that's why the surgery. It was putting out so much of the hormone, it was literally going to burn out her system.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, and insist on getting answers. And do kick tail if they aren't treating her well! That nurse call thing is inexcusable!

Jim

Wow Jim!  That first doctor must have been a complete idiot!  Glad that you were there to defend her!

Amen to that, doctors are smart but they don't know everything! A tumor sounds serious but at least they seem to be getting closer to pin-pointing the problem.,

Here's the missing one Cliff: I plan on doing another one in the future as I really love the quirky quality of them. The biggest problem I ran into with this build was the overlapping of the sponson directly beneath the main gun turret. Unfortunately , I didn't catch it in time and it would've required major surgery to fix so it stays.

Great pictures there Mike!  You did a great job on her!

Well, I guess the 101 will not be totally OOB anymore. I ordered a Master Model brass pitot tube for it as the kit part was large, clunky and out of scale.

I had spotted it at Sprue Brothers a few weeks ago, but tonight I went to order and OUT OF STOCK! I searched and found plenty on Ebay, but didn't want to play with bidding and all that. I decided to check my Australian source (BNA Model World), and it's in stock! I also checked to see if they had an Eduard PE detail set for the F-100 Super Sabre I got a few weeks back, and it's also in stock, plus $5 cheaper than SB! I placed my order going cheap with standard Airmail for less than 4 bucks. I got both items for about what the PE set would have cost here! Plus shipping was much cheaper!

The down side: 5-8 working days! Could be as much as 2 weeks! I guess not for the impatient, yes?

The good thing? My order was placed just an hour before their 'dispatch' time and has already shipped!

Just got the email and I think it shipped......tomorrow...... Huh? You know, the ol' International Dateline thing..... Hmm Confused

Also did more painting and prep work, but too late to post pictures this round. Even if it is still today here...

Jim

Hi Jim,

That is probably the biggest complaint I have about Sprue Brothers.  It seems they are always out of stock of what ever item you are wanting.  They eventually get it back in stock, but by the time they do, I have already ordered and received the item from somewhere else.

The best part of ordering from Sprue Brothers is that if it is in stock, they do ship it pretty fast and you will get it in a couple of days.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all the well wishes for my Mom.  She spent the day getting even more blood drawn, another CT scan, a couple of MRI scans, an echo cardiogram, and another examination by the neurologist.  I didn't catch the cardiologist yesterday, I am hoping to catch him today.  You have to be lucky enough to be in the room when they come by.  They are not on a set schedule.

Son Of Medicine Man

I have sitting in the ER now for five hours with my Mom. Her heart is beating too slow. It caused blood clots and she had a small stroke.

Ken

Very sorry to hear that, Ken! Our hearts and prayers are with your mom and you. I hope she recovers real soon.

Ken, I am truly sorry to hear that news! You have the thoughts and wishes myself and everyone here as well!

I think that they will probably end up giving her a pacemaker. I know 3 different people who ended up getting one for the same reason.

Even though we can't be with you physically at your side, we are there in spirit!

Jim

P.S. Try to keep in touch!

Bish

Been working on our garden the last couple of weeks. We have a really heavy clay soil, and with all the rain this winter, its a real pain to dig up. But its getting there. Nice Tulips. Snow, in April, we had that last year, but that was a real one off. We have not had a single flack of snow this year.

Lovely work on the burners, they look spot on.

Sounds like you have a lot of work to do there Ken. I feel for you.

Thank you Bish for the well wishes.

It will be a few more weeks before we are ready to start on our garden.  I messed up though on the seedlings.  I have always used in the past the fluorescent 4 foot tube lights.  I don't have the room for that anymore, so I thought I would try the par 38 floodlight type.  I must have gotten them to close because it fried half of the seedlings.  Oh well, live and learn.

Hey guys!

Haven't gotten a great deal done this week as I had some other issues to deal with.

Ken, good to hear about the insurance, but a pain it will be to determine values of everything. Weather just seems to affect so many lives! (The weather is one of the reasons for my job slow down- the harsh winter all over postponed many customer projects)

It was in the 70's today! (Saturday!) I managed to be outside cleaning up some of the winter debris, and even did some grilling. I briefly got to enjoy these guys as by this time tomorrow, it will be 25 degrees and up to 4 inches of snow on the ground.

It never fails that every time the tulips come up, it snows again.

I did manage some work, one being the AB nozzles for the One-O-Wonder. My model burners on the block in the foreground and a photo of the real thing behind them. I think they came out pretty decent.

The other thing I attempted was to throw a little paint at the plane. That didn't go so well as the airbrush Gods were not in my favor. The first night I must of has a glob of hardened paint get sucked up into the airbrush as it was hopelessly clogged and refused to spray. After a bit of immature frustration, I dug it back out of the trash can, tore it down into all it components, cleaned everything, and set it aside. I also ran the entire bottle of paint through one of my strainer funnels.

The next night was not good either as I couldn't seem to get the paint/thinner dialed in. First it was too thick and I was getting nothing but spatters, then I overthinned and ended up with runs down the tail of the plane. (One word of caution; it does not work to try and wipe away the run with a cotton ball wet with mineral spirits- you can guess what a mess that made!)

Fortunately, Testors Easy-Lift-Off (Formerly Polly-Scale) and a stiff brush removed all the paint and fuzz!

Better luck tonight:

The air brake does not lay flat as it is only held in by friction for now.

Well, off to bed! Since I began this post, it has started to rain! When I get up, no doubt it will be to snow!

Jim

I know what you mean about the weather Jim!  We got teased with a couple of 70 degree days and now they are predicting snow for tonight with a low of 28 degrees.  Tomorrow's high is only going to be 41 degrees.

Awesome job on those Pratt & Whitney J57-P-55 afterburning turbojets!  They look just like the real thing!  And good job recovering on your paint job.  Hopefully that airbrush will cooperate next time.

Mike: Don't remember what all Tamiya kits I had but some off the top of my head were: the M4A3E8 Sherman (which is closer to 1/32!), a Panther, a motorized M1 Abrams, a M10, a M5 Staurt, and a zillion or so figures. Some are in the spare parts box and the rest are somewhere stored but not sure where!

LOL, that's awesome Jim- kinda expected it with a pound of explosives shoved in a four pound punkin though!!!

Hoping the second big explosion wasn't when the wife found out he'd used her camera for the close up shots!

Cliff, I completely agree on the Tamiya kits. It's why I still like them all these years later in spite of some flaws. And yes Dave I had the Tiger, as I recall it met an ignominious end on the battlefield called my back patio. Bottle rockets, BB gun and firecrackers spelled its demise! Ah, the good old days; such a shame youth is wasted on the young......

Ah, who says you need to be young to have fun!
