Thanks for the comments on my SC 500.

Looking good, guys. Joe, I like the cables from the control column. Nice addition.

Jay. I like that display case. Where did you get that? Nice builds you have in there!

Hi,

Thank you for your help Bish. Unfortunately the lost instructions are the basic kit ones.

And thanks Mustang1989, compared the parts and I can't even use the seat belts - no worries, a E is next :)

@ Rigidrider: Silva is looking very sharp!!!

What happened to the flatted wheels?

Zack

Happy Modeling! Cool

Hey Sackgasses... You gently heat the tires and flatten them a bit to make them look like they have weight on them when its upright and on the wheels. Kinda like your car or truck what ever. Unless you have a hundred lbs of air in them( ha) they kind of flatten and bulge abit from the weight of the car.

Here's a question for the Experten! I'm using Aeromaster decals and they are not called "Errormaster" for nothing -- I try to not take them at face value. Every depiction of the Richtofen shield seems to be different, would it be right to say that the insignia was changed over time, or that variations in the design could have occurred simultaneously? How variable were insignia???? I ask because the rendition in the Aeromaster set and that in the Print Scale set for either the same aircraft or a very close twin look nothing alike! I've spent quite some time searching on the unit and aircraft, and found nothing concrete as yet.

Mike, the only difference I have seen is the color of the shield. I have seen it in white, silver, and clear. The red outline of the shield and the red "R" look pretty close.

What Aeromaster sheet are you using? I may have it and can check it out.

Thanks, Jay -- it's 48-496, Blitzkrieg on Poland. Their shield barely looks like a shield, in fact...

Mike, I do have that sheet and I see what you mean. I can't find anything to support that shape of the shield.

Just remembered I have the book that went with that decal sheet. Looks like it is correct. It is for JG131 which later became JG2. I guess they changed the emblem at that time.

Quick update on the Buchon (no pics, sorry).

I masked the underside to be ready for the Alclad base for the NMF, and the Spaniards did an annoying thing where the metal finish wraps around the front of the wings, but at least it's a hard solid line so I won't have to fade the edges later.

I also decided the kit decal for the tail (the Spanish black X on a white base) is something I don't want to mess with, so I sprayed the flat white over the black base tonight. Took many coats to get it right, and I will let the paint dry overnight before I come back and shoot the X. I plan on shooting it in two sessions, one line each, so I don't go crazy masking it. Hopefully this doesn't make it too dark over the crossing point, but I intend to get it pretty black.

After that, it's on to the Alclad black base.

For the past few days I've been trying to get caught up in here....sixty plus pages.  Sorry I'm late for the party folks.  The work in here so far is incredible!  I've been trying to get inspired on which particular 109 I wanted to build. I did switch from the 1/48 Hasegawa G-2 to the G-6.  My dilemma is finding a G-6 in defense of the Reich markings without the lower wing cannons.  These just look out of place on a 109 to me.  The only versions I seem to find that are void these "gondolas" are on the Eastern front.  Nothing against that particular front, its just right now I'm interested in the Gustavs that went after the bombers.  Why are markings for these so hard to find?  Perhaps its my lack of Luftwaffe knowledge in sorting through these on Ebay and the like.  I'm open for suggestions.

For this project I have the "Experten" boxing.  This one will get a True Details pit (which I had in the stash) and perhaps some Ultracast wheels later.

If nothing jumps out at me for inspiration, I'll go with this one, Anton Hackl's III /JG 11 G-6, whose markings came with the kit.

Onward to the build.  I started with the cockpit.  For the RLM 66 I used XF-63 German Grey lightened up slightly with XF-19 Sky Grey.  XF-63 to my eye is too dark.  I love True Details cockpits, but hate their instrument panels.  They're generally oversized and hard to detail paint.  I used the kit example which I drybrushed and washed.

The cockpit fit the fuselage without issue and I sealed it up.  Here I did a test fit with the wings...  No wing root issues.  I also added the access door behind the pilot's head out of sheet styrene.

The following night I got the airframe together.  These pretty much fall together.  Its my understanding that there is supposed to be a panel line that runs down the spine, I didn't like the way it looked on my last 109, so I decided not to carve it in this time.  Here we are primered and ready for paint, whichever scheme I decide on....

Thanks, Jay -- I wasn't at all sure what to do, but if your book confirms the shield is right for the period then that's terrific -- I've gone ahead and applied them to the aircraft. Much obliged!

A few more decals before I call it a night!

Joe (lawdog): Dang man! Came out of the gate screamin' on this one!!! You'll be entered in on the intro post soon. Clemens'll be back and get you on there. Glad you joined the partee!!!

John: That canopy masking did come out good! Wow!

Joe, your rocking it as usual. Great work ! Bow Down

John, you totally killed that 1/72 kit. The canopy is sweet. I understand the difficulty of working on those small kits. My eyes and fingers just won't hear of it, so I work with the larger birds. My hats off to those of you who rock the small one's. Yes

OK Worthy Model Masters…. Grasshopper thinks he’s ready to begin running with the big dogs.

Got my BF109F-4 Trop and a few add ons sitting here ready to go. Still waiting for the decal sets to show up. I’m quite impressed with the talent here. Have been keeping up on the thread and the other BF109 builds. Unbelievable talent. Will the pace slow down over the next few months so us mere mortals will feel comfortable posting our rookie handywork?

I won’t start putting together the PE IP and cockpit set until next week. Need to clear the deck of a few items. Took the PE cockpit set out and looked it over. Intimidating as Hell. Have spent countless hours reading here and other FSM threads. Many more hours practicing with the new Paasch Model H.

Many of you have responded with genuine kindness and encouragement to questions sent by PM. Thank you!

Here we go.

Joe

You can blame the January 1943 Casablanca Conference for that when the Allies decided to bomb Germany into oblivion.  With the masses of bombers coming over, I'm assuming these were the primary targets, and Luftwaffe fighters needed the extra fire power to bring them down.  From my reading, it seems allied escorts wasn't a huge issue until end of the year?

Maybe try searching for the G-6 as it appeared in 1942.  Not sure where to start with decals, but found some interesting primers on Reich defense markings:

Joe(lawdog), you're going to want to sand off those two bumps on the left side of the fuselage below the canopy. Nice work on the cockpit! I will look at my decals tonight and see if I have something suitable. I have a lot of 1/48 decals that I probably will never use.

John, that looks great. Excellent masking!

John, that's a lovely looking job on that build. But I wish I had realised earlier. The tail should be all white and there was some overspray under the 9 covering up old markings. I guess Italeri have miss that. Still looks really nice and a great job on the weathering.
