2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Brandon: Man I've just gotta say that this is just a fabulous show you're puttin' on! I've seen these Zvezda kits and OOB I was just utterly awed by what I saw. With a few scratch built items I believe these kits can be built into show winners right out of the box. You're doing great and love all the additions you are "tacking on".

I know, and here is me getting ready to go to the other end of the scale range. I just hope my brain can handle it.

First of all, I hope all the Dads had a great Father's Day. We drove up to Columbia to see our daughter then we all drove to see my son and his wife in Charleston on Sunday. We had a great time with the kids.

Looks like you are getting ready for paint on one fine build. Good job.

As for my progress, I got the pit completed and just need to shoot clear flat and assemble the tub to be mounted in the fuselage. I added thin wires to busy up things a bit.

I used some left over pe pieces to make the foot pedal straps.

Added Eduard belts.

I also added placards from Airscale to dress up the office.

The IP was done using the kit's decals and Testors Clear Parts Cement for the lenses.

I am flat out stunned at all the incredible work in this thread.  Master builders across the board.  I have been pretty quiet but I have been following along.  

I want to tell you that I should have some finished pictures of mine up soon.  The issue will be at the newstands sometime later this week.  I will pick a couple of the not used pictures and tie up the loose ends.

As for me... I wait no longer! The PE for the cockpit has still not arrived, so I will start with another area, one of my favorites... The Engine!

This will be an older Revell "Lone Eagles" series Bf109 G-2, of Jg52, Black 2 Flown by Gunther Rall, Russia, 1943.I believe (from what I was able to find) that this was the craft he flew when he was so badly injured, and had a 9 month recuperation lay up.

Any way, I will start now and hope for my parts to arrive soon.

This has been in stash for awhile and if memory serves (they say that's the first thing to go) it was found at a yard sale several years ago.

Not to bad for an old kit.

I really do like working with engines and haven't been able to do one lately.

Like I said, fairly well detailed for an old kit.

Starting to do some of the detailing on it, Used dry transfers for the engines no.# and cut a small piece from an old piece of a nylon stocking I use to filter paint and glued it to the compressor intake to serve as a particle screen. The paint is NATO Black from Tamiya, and a wash of Vallejo oily earth acrylic.

Well this is about all for now. Starting on the plug wiring...

Joe, yes 1/32 and the retaining straps on the tanks are made of metalic ducting tape. One roll (got this at the Home Depot) will last FOREVER. Lol...its good for many of my modeling neesd.

I'll get you entered in on the intro Doug! Aluminum tape...let's see.......I've got a roll of that somewhere 'round here.......

Well here I go with the 1/144 scale kit by Zvezda.  TINY, but I am currently planning a diorama that a friend suggested.   He owns the local hobby store here and wondered if I could make a museum scene with a bunch of 1/144 planes.  I have stocked up on the models but just now starting to build them. 

The Stuka will be in the pictures too due to the fact it shares a similar paint scheme and it will be easier to do both together than separately (painting-wise that is).  

Both are tiny of course, but retain a decent amount of detail.  Though to me, the 109's wings look to be incorrectly shaped.  Looks more like a Spitfire's wings to me.  

For reference sake the Fw190 is a 1/48 and the white line grid are made up of 1"x1" squares.

Since the cockpit is all but nonexistent in this kit I'll have to turn to the spare part box, and make one. Oh... My PE kit finally made it and I can get going...

Cody: Where's the cockpit?????   Those paint jobs look great so far! It's funny just how much smaller the 109 is in scale to the Ju-87. Wow! What a difference!!

Yeah Joe... it never ceases to amaze me, It has an amazing amount of detail in the engine, and the body riveting and panel lines, and moving control surfaces.... but a lame cockpit. But a lot of kits are like that, I guess they figure it will be closed up and put extra into the highly visible areas. Also I think this was about the time that Revell had hit rock bottom in its quality, and they were starting to dig out of the hole they were in. The kits they (RMG) offer now, are light years ahead of the ones in years past, when you stop to consider the cost and all.

Brandon K, Like Joe said, I love em all. When I was starting to build, (we wont mention how many years that has been) lol... 48th scales were the "Big new offers" in kits. Now I have issues with their size and even though I have a good stash of 48s I tend to lean to and prefer the 32nds. You can really deck out a 32nd and one day will crack open one of the 24ths Ive acquired, any way, thanks again for the kind words.

Nice scratchbuilding Doug. That is what I like about 1/32 scale, the ease of scratchbuilding not to mention making it easier on these older eyes. I have a Bandai 1/24 George in the stash which should make one enjoyable scratch building experience.

I originally set out to do a late G-6 Erla version but in order to conserve self space, I will go with the early G6 since I have my eye out for a ROG 1/32 K-4. The early G6 has the visually different details from the K, this way I will have some variety in the 109 line. I also have a E-7 and G-2/Trop (Trumpeter) in the stash, all 1/32.

As with any kit, some inaccuracies will be incorporated into the kit by the manufacturer and Revell  is no different here. With that said, I will not go overboard trying to make a "correct" G6 but rather just fix some of the more visible and easier corrected details. By the way, this G-6 has all the parts necessary for a G-14.

I will not go into lengthy explanations just to keep things moving but some details have to be filled in as they were not found on the G-6 but on the G-14 as per my research. These recessed details were filled in with Perfect Plastic Putty and when dry were lightly sanded flush.

The wingtip panel line tape is a bit thick and shows the panel line which was to be covered by the tape.

PPP was applied to fill in the panel line then sanded smooth, thinning down the tape a bit to make it less noticeable.

The fuselage halves were joined with Plast I Weld applied with a Touch n flow applicator.

The researching is taking more time than the actual build. If you are building this ROG  kit, do some research as there are some mistakes in the parts labeling and steps. This is still a VERY nice kit and carries an extremely affordable price tag.

And the great work continues!! Sorry everyone for the disappearing act,,,, been following loosely.. One of my parents health has taken a dive so that has been my days as of late. Keep up the awesomeness that has been this GB and I will try to pop in when I can!
