We will be starting on Jan 01 to give everyone time to complete their Kits in the Calender Year. Like all other GB's they will be under this thread to keep it all together. First group build for me. Put me in for Trumpeter's USS Lexington CV-2 in 1:350. 

Planning on oob 5/42 appearance with the Gold Medal Models PE set plus extra Trumpeter aircraft kits and GMM figures.

Waterline on an ocean base entitled "Sailing into history".

Here we go! USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CV-42.

I've picked up a "started" CV-60 kit as well, for $ 10.00. I'm going to try the old article to add a full hull to the Midway class flat bottom.

One more thing. I'm going to start a thread here in GB's called Flat Top GB 2016- unused aircraft". Just a place to list aircraft not used...

Hey all. Just opened up the Illustrious and I seem to have my work cut out for me. Few questions:

How simple is it to do a wood base at the plastic one seems quite flimsy.

Can someone point me in the direction of which paints to order? I found a colour drawing of her at the time of Taranto but am having trouble matching it to manufacturers.

Jay, the only range of ship paints i know of are colourcoats. have you tried matching it up with theirs.

I'm pretty sure that she had a camo pattern of 507B (medium grey) and 507C (light grey) on the verticals, and the decks were 507A (Dark Grey). Testors MM makes all three.

A wood base isn't too hard. You will have to make it though, too big to use a plaque blank.

I bought about sixteen feet of 1x6 oak from Home Depot about ten years ago and chopped it up into 12, 16 and 24 inch lengths. I took it to a wood shop and had them run a 1/4 round all around each piece. When I need a base I grab one and clean finish it.

You can set her on blocks, or make pedestals, which I prefer. I've got a bag full of these cute little brass cylinder lamp parts. Before I glue the deck on, I drill a pair of holes through the bottom and a pair to match in a base. Then I put a 8-32 through each hole from the inside, spin a nut tight against the hull from the outside, and give it a shot of CA glue. My little cylinder fits over the outside of the nut. Put it on the base and install nuts from the bottom, countersunk.

I have been thinking about useing the wood blocks for my ships. I do like the look of them and i can't find those lamp parts anywhere.

GM, have you thought about investing in a router. I got a cheap one last year and its really come in useful.

Very nice job on your ship block. That is a look I am going to start applying to my ship builds.

Thanks, it's not too hard to do. Having the model on a temp base makes it so much easier to detail. It took me a while (aircraft modeler) to get used to. My several temp bases, those pine peices, have a whole bunch of holes down the middle so that I can set the distances between the final pedestals easily (except the one here. I had to make a new one for the length of this ship). On battleships I usually set the pedestals under the first and last turret, otherwise at the third points.

I know Italeri have done smaller ships, like PT and S-Boats, but not seen a large ship from them before. Will interested to se how this builds surf.

That is going to be a cool subject to watch get built Raider, seems the Wasp was a forgotten subject and 1/350 will really show the ship well.  

Well, starting the Tamiya Enterprise CV6 soon, even though I got the kit and all the goodies to backdate it to Spring 1942 back in 2006, I just opened up everything to see I have what I need to start.  Looks all there.  I'm pretty much building the ship right out of the box and resisting the urge to either buy a Trumpeter Hornet or an aftermarket kit for the skinny, rounded island that this kit is known for.  

Nice to see everyone's start-ups.  

I'm still doing some research to determine various aspects of CV-5, particularly her weapons fitting.

Scottrc:  I built the same Enterprise from Tamiya a while back for a GB.  Maybe you've seen them, but I found a couple of threads over at ModelWarship that were really helpful. I pretty much followed Mr. Bjorklund's lead.

Starfighter Decals now also makes a set of 1/700 decals with deck markings and insignia for the airwing.  The set includes decals for all three of the Yorktown class carriers.  I thought they were very good.

I think they are also available from Sprue Brothers.  I hope I can get Yorktown to turn out as well.

Great to see some builds underway. Bish, Italeri did quite a few US modern Carriers in 720 Scale and Indy is one of them. They did some Forrestal Class and Kitty Hawk Class Carriers as well as some Nimitz Class Carriers. They even did the Adm Kuznetsov......Cheers mark
