The official Submarine Warfare Group Build 2016 - 2017

Got a little done on her hull.  As can be seen, the pressure hulld has the deck and bulkheads, so someone more adventurous has the possibility of doing a cutaway on her.

Have painted the forward section of the inside of the hull and the pressure hull.

Hull glued up, at least to the upper opening where the deck opening is. Also painted the hull and underside of the deck at this time.  Paint line is where deck will glue to the hull.

Deck dry fitted to the hull, still have a little sanding to do to clean up the fit a little better.

PJ, i don't have anything for the Type IX yet. I have not even looked into what i will get as i have been hoping for a new tower. I had not looked at the Eduard gun but i was thinking about the CMK. When i saw that being release, i was hoping that would mean an earlier tower.

I will leave the Type IX for a while, once i have done my 1/125th kit, i want to focus on the Type VII as i have everything for that. I have seen those MER's but not read anything about them, thats a real shame. I have the Brasin deck gun for the Type VII, i might have to check that out and se if there any problems.

I also have the 1/72 Type IX and want to build it not as the 505 and want to add the deck gun. There is so much to research to make sure the set up is correct. Which gun are you using? The Eduard one is said to be out of scale unless they fixed the problem.

And speaking about out of scale, same thing hapenned with their Brasin MER set where the loading lugs on Mk. 82s don't match the MER's attachment points and are a bit too short so the Mk 82s at the rear stations hit the front ones! I compared them to the Hasegawa's MERs and you can see the size difference.

I have built several 1/72 Type VIIs and did the same thing about grinding down the inside of the hull to where you almost see daylight and then clean up the holes with a #11 blade and round files.

I will be starting my 1/144 Gato soon as I'm in between several builds and a couple of comissions, so I haven't forgotten. I will be watching your progress on this one with great interest.

So I don't forget that I'm part of this GB  I'm off and running, silent running that is, LOL, as soon as I post this my sub is coming out so I can plan my build. As soon as I can co- ordinate with my wife pix will follow. Everything I have seen here so far is awesome.

Yep, sounds like an old Renwal kit. For tough plastic I use small files which will knock down that plastic pretty quick.

I did some work on the starboard stern and installed the PE. I realized that removing the precise amount of plastic before installing the PE pieces wasn’t necessary. For the port side I’m first drilling some locating holes. I will glue the PE on first then grind the inside. Once this is ground down I’ll cut out the holes with an Exacto.

 

That is some great work. You must have a lot mor patience than I.

Sorry guys, I have been busy with non-model stuff lately.  But all the activity on the GB has gotten me to start my project:

I will be drafting up a set of basic drawings to make patterns for the various parts.  Also it is a good time to do a check against Mikro-Mir's research, as I have a feeling it is very suspect.

Still on the fence regarding forming the hull parts.  A straight-up lamination/sanding is the least work, but that would result in a heavy model.  I am leaning towards heat forming the hull panels over turned cones made of balsa.  Remember, my mantra is "measure once, cut twice", so what will happen is anyone's guess!

It use to really freak me out to cut and hack but not anymore. I can always fix it with filler mad styrene.

I thought so. Although I did it to protect really old plans, a plus is paints will wipe right off. So will coffee.

Looks like you are getting a good start on your kit. I'm trying to get a little more adventurous at modifying my builds. I get a lot of inspiration and motivation at seeing you guys work on here. Thanks for that.

Well, I can't say I have gotten started on my build yet. But, what I did do today was take the sheet of instructions to Office Max, and got it laminated. The sheet was so old I was afraid it would crumble with much use. The sheet was 15"X29", and it cost less than $4 to laminate. That seems like a real deal if anyone else may need the same service in the future.

I'll follow right behind.  Got the foam board glued up last night (Yeah, jumped the gun a touch), and the hull opening cut out this morning.  Here she is, along with the White Ensign PE set and the Nautlis resin gun set, and I was able to get a second 20mm from him without buying another complete gun set. Also a pic of the plate made up for the base.  Hope to get the pressure hull and hull together this week, along with shaping the foam board. 

The official start of the Official Submarine Warfare GB 2016-17

I believe I will start off my 1st entry with a breakdown of what I have here.

The kit was purchased a few years back by my daughter on Father's Day and I received the PE Big Ed set last Christmas. I didn't get the Pontos wood deck because frankly' I couldn't afford or justify it. Like I said earlier, the removal of the box from the stash sure leaves a huge hole  I need to fill the void.

Well here it is. I'm sure most everyone is familiar with the kit, have one in your stash, built one yourself or watched a few WIP builds. The hull comes in 4 pieces and is going to require some surgery to open the limber holes and flood hatches. I will also build a representation of the pressure hull which can be seen through the limber holes.

YEP. we don't do that well. I now have 2 wargames on the Leningrad campaign and one on the Russo-Finnish War. finished my 3rd book on that and, so typical, now have a 1/35 Finnish BT-42, Soviet T-28 (2 of which were captured and used by the Finns), BT-5, Ba-10, T-26, AFV CLUB T-34 with clear hull and interior and a T-35 (which wasn't in that war but was part of the Leningrad Military District). All this for class prep for my fall class on the siege of Leningrad.

So let's just open the T-28 box and build it. But NOOOOOO!!! let's research pics for a diorama ala Bish, look up Finnish armor in the Continuation War, search for 1/35 Finnish ski troops, learn how to make white snow (i know how to make yellow snow) look for videos online and read 4 more books in August and start my class slides.

I know. Let's get into modern naval warfare in the South China Sea and U-boats. and we have a new dog. Typical.

Yup, lolol... I'm back, it has been so terribly busy this year, we've made 2 trips to the Philippines getting our house remodeled, my wife FINALLY got her USCitizenship, work has been effing crazy busy, and I have prescious little time to build anything as of late. And on top of all that I have a surgeon wanting to  remove some of my body parts next possible opportunity.  AAAAARGH ... lolol... but, I have thought of and have missed each and every one of you and am wanting to build again! I look forward to the banter and amazing builds as was in the past. Can't wait to start!

Hey MC... I'd sure like to get in on this one. I found an Academy type IX UBoat at a yard sale a few yrs ago, and I've been looking for a good reason to build. I've never really built but 1 sub before and this will be new to me, being I want to do a wreck. II'll need to do a bit of research and may not be able to kick off on the start date but shortly there after?

The other boat I was thinking of was the 507. It was a type IXC, should be close enough to the 505 but still has the deck gun.

It sunk several ships and was lost to a Cat.

I just need to do some reserch on the tower, but it was constructed by Deutsche Werft AG, Hamburg like the 505. Nothing is in stone but I would like to mount the 10.5 cm gun. It's just too cool.
