What did they use to get those glass domes to seal I wonder?

Thanks!

Major construction is complete. I could not get the hatch hinges to look right,

They looked much too large for scale. I'm leaving them off for now. I might make

some smaller ones later.

The PE included with the kit is VERY thick and hard to work with.

Tomorrow I'll try and get a coat of black paint on. With a bit of luck I'll make it

by the deadline!

Making slow progress.

The prop shroud I made is too small. It fits inside the rudder housing,

but not around the prop.

I've never seen the Verlinden kit in person, So I can't answer about that.

The Mikro-Mir seems to have the correct torpedo orientation. The spar mounts on the bottom of the bow on a hinge point with a line adjusting the angle through the top of the bow.

This matches with what the people at the Hunley museum said.

Riging will be interesting.

Super duper Mach 71!  Glad to be of help. Yes  The easiest way to get hot water for such times is to use a Pyrex measuring cup, fill it up, and microwave on high power for around 2-1/2 minutes.  When the water starts to cool, just pop the Pyrex back into the microwave.  It sure beats using the range!

I wonder how your Mikro-Mir Hunley compares to the old Verlinden resin kit?  How did the kit treat the torpedo spar mountng details?  That is one area that is still under debate regarding the real thing.  I built the Verlinden kit a while ago; it was a two-fer, with a full hull and waterline kit in the box.  I never got around to doing the waterline one.

That's looking great G. Nice repair on those grab handles and the PE for the torps look like they will really bring those up to standard.

Okay onwards!

Bronco's Seehund has a fantastic one piece slide molded sail.

Fit is generally very good, but I could not get the hull halves to match under the stern.

https://flic.kr/p/W7fTmb] Seehund-06 by N.T. Izumi, on Flickr

It's really minor though, considering that the rest of the parts fit perfectly.  Some putty will fix it.

https://flic.kr/p/W7fTP5] Seehund-03 by N.T. Izumi, on Flickr

The bow and stern "grab handles" are molded on to one of the hull halves, and suffered damage while in the box.  They were cut off and replaced with brass wire.

Only a few pieces remain to be attached to the hull.  The clear dome fits atop the crew entry hatch, and although there is no detail to see inside, the small opening will not reveal much.  The  dive planes have some rather nasty sink marks which will easily be filled with putty.  The periscope will need a head with a looken-peeper glass.

The torpedos are suspect in terms of accuracy, looking like fat hot dogs, with oval depressions representing the bolt holes that secure the warhead and drive sections to the main body.  This really bothered me, but I'm going to leave these alone.  Life is too short to get bogged down in the small details.  The G7 torpedos in the Italeri Biber kit look much closer to the real deal, having got the chance to inspect a real one at the Imperial War Museum in London.

Again, only a few parts to add to complete the torpedos.  The PE mini-bananas are to be added to the impact fuse caps.

Planning to roll this out to the paint shop this weekend.

Steve,

The scratchbuilding fire isn't in me right now, so can I humbly sub (pun intended!) a Bronco Seehund in lieu of the Resurgam?

The Seehund pretty much fell together, so I figure I can get paint on it quickly  in time before the deadline.

Cut a strip of 0.015 sheet plastic maybe 2x the circumference of the shroud.  Wrap it around a metal tube smaller than the shroud diameter, tape it down then plunge into near boiling water.  Wait about 30 seconds then run under cold water.  Cut the strip to correct length and glue in place.  HTH

I havent given up, Family commitments  have kept me busy for a while.

I hope to get some time this week to work on the Hunley.

One thing I have not figured out yet is the Propeller shroud. It is

photo etch and in 2 pieces. There will be a lot of forces acting on the 2 joins.

I'm thinking CA wont hold them togther, the same with solder. Maybe silver solder.

Does anyone have any sugestions?

Alright, back from a wonderful vacation and ready to finish my Wahoo. I received an email from Stefan, saying that he fixed whatever issue they were having with the 20mms. Hopefully they will get mailed soon. Therefore, I'll fix the gap I have on the starboard side decking and then start getting some paint on her.

Like a large number of us, I will have to find a new photo hosting site and try and grab what I can from PB.

kearsarge

Finally getting around to this with just over a month left. I was planning on doing a Micro Mir 1/35 kit of the Turtle but I've got other plans now for this kit. Instead I'll be working Micro Mir's 1/350 kit of the Thresher/Permit class SSN. Good thing there's not a lot of parts to a nuke boar.

I updated the roster. It will be nice to add an earler USN nuke to the wall.

Thanks for the kind words. I can't imagine why the 20s can't be made? I got some from them. Stefan and another individual make them.

PJ,

Your Gato is a thing of beauty sir!

Mach,

Your Hunley is looking great.

Update on my Gato: I received the Shapeway 4" deck gun and it is awesome. However, I received an email stating they cannot make the 20mms......  argh. The only 20mm that I can clean up from the Nautilus bunch are the twin 20's. I might do a "what if" Wahoo with the twins...... Or just leave off the 20's until I can figure out another way.

Otherwise, the hull and deck are glued and the railing on the sail is complete. Did anyone else have issues with the portion of the deck not mating correctly just aft of the deck gun? I have had to fill with Green putty. It was only on the starboard side, the port side fit perfectly. Probably user error.

So, when I get back from my trip, I am going to get her done.

Steve

I used the kristal klear. I think it came out ok, I'll see after another coat of primer.

I'll let it set up before I hit it with paint again.

Another good idea. That got me thinking, Maybe Micro Krystal Klear would work

well. I'll try it.

Aleene's Tacky Glue Gel is a bit thicker giving you more control.

Try some drops of white glue. You can wipe them away if they don't go on streight.

I think I'm ready to start construction on the Hunley.

I have to replace some rivets that were sanded away.

2 ways come to mind.

Use some CA glue to make the rivets. This might not be very uniform.

Or use some cut streatched sprue. This might be difficult as my eyes suck!

I'm kind of leaning towards the CA glue unless anyone has a better idea.

Thanks

Mark

It is MUCH bigger that I thought also.

This is the mid section Hunly as she sits now.

You can use the ladder for a sense of scale.

They have 2 hull sections built that people can sit in.

Once I got in, there was much more room that I espected.

Thanks mach, nothing to it. It's just artist oil paints.

The Hunley is shaping up!
