I think you have some typos there my friend... TBDs were in VT-5, and VA squadrons were still several years away. Were the first SBDs launched from VS-5 perhaps?
F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!
U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!
N is for NO SURVIVORS...

G,
You wouldn't happen to have any pics of this would you? I've got pics of of every type of aircraft VMFA-211 flies or has flown with the exception of the Buffaloes and -4 Wildcats they flew after Wake. Plan is to do a squadron history build eventually.
Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.
According to this link, these are VMF-211 F2As

yes the TBDs were VT-5.
As for the SBDs, one was VS-5 and one was VB-5. I will doublecheck, but I think the VBs went first.
Doh!
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Well if there was sake involved...

Thanks Stik,
I had seen those before, but couldn't find them again (my googlefu failed me). Scrounging those markings should be easy.
You're welcome

Hey Check,
Still trying to decide what to build for this GB and the Midway GB, and I am now leaning towards the Yorktown. If I built it, then I could use it in both GBs and also I would have all three of the class carriers in my collection.
I have never taken part in a groub build but this one has my interest. If you would have me I would like to do a Hasegawa 1/72nd SBD-3 Dauntless from either VS-2 or VS-5.
That would be great, scott. Yorktown is a great ship.
Which one do you have--the Tamiya?
I have Tamiya's Hornet in the closet. Was thinking I might start her up later in the year, if I have enough time.
When you decide, I'll update the roster.
Welcome to the GB, ExtremeTeam. I think you'll find them to be a lot of fun--and a source of really good information.
I have couple of the Hasegawa SBD's--when they were boxed up two-in-a-package a few years ago; but I've only looked at the instructions. Looks like they are pretty decent kits.
Roster will be updated right away.
Yes she was. I am in the middle of a good book about the SBDs on Guadalcanal, but the first half really was about the Coral Sea. A very good and detailed account. Including lists of the VB and VS squadrons on both carriers, their crews and those guys bios.
"The Battle for Hell's Island".
I looked at it on amazon just now, GM. I see it's authored by Stephen Moore who did "Pacific Payback"--another good book.
I'll be adding this to my reading list.
Back atcha with Pacific Payback.
Being a student of naval aviation, especially the early war period, I would like to participate in this Group Build as well. I am building a Fine Molds A5M4, Type 97 Carrier Fighter, and the marking will be one flown from IJN Shoho, and possibly was one of three A5M's shot down during the attack on the ill fated Japanese carrier. Two were shot down by Lcdr James Flatley.
This is a started build, and I will post pictures to catch up. Thank for this group, also, and I look forward to seeing everyone's work.
Best Regards
Freddie from LI
"I'm gonna build all these models one kit at a time!
Your not late Freddie, The build starts May 4, in a little over 20 days.
Steve
Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Nope, you're not late at all, Freddie. GB starts on the 75th anniversary of the battle and goes on for a year.
Good to have you with us. I'll update the front page.
What scale are you working in?

I will contribute a "Wildcat" as well, markings to be decided, but most likely from USS Lexington.
I'm glad you have my kit on the roster Check, otherwise I couldn't remember which Kate I doing for which GB.
I ordered the new Airfix Kate today and should be here before May 8th and going to build it in this configuration. Going to be cool to have 2 Kates. I love that bird (All Japanese birds actually) and it's a shame I don't have a single one on the shelf.
Excellent looking aircraft, Steve. Great lines and structure, and an important participant in the Pacific Theater.
I'm shamed to admit I have no Japanese planes in the collection. I'll have to do something about that.

Not even a Zero sen?
No, not even a Zero.
I've done some looking around, and I don't have the faintest idea about Japanese painting of aircraft. Colourcoats has lots of Japanese aircraft markings, but I don't know what to use for what.
