Greg, thanks for the feedback. I’ll try using the MM ‘white’ primer on the next model.  Mike

rocker, great job on the defiant, really nice finsh, and i do like those markings.

I have not done a black scheme yet, but i think jack is right in that is easy to over due the panel lines. I think you have it just right.

I'll update the front page. Any preferance on which pic to use?

Rocker, good job on that one. Yes

I notice some people like to put a light coloured wash on the panel lines, but to me that looks unrealistic if done over the whole surface.

Jack

Bish, Gamera, Tony, and anyone else I forgot - thanks for the kind words! I just finished up my Defiant last night. I stayed up late, but it was worth it! I weathered my Defiant with grey acryilic crafting paint mixed with water and dishsoap. I didn't go too crazy on weathering, but there's enough there to make it interesting. I created paint chips with testor's aluminium, smudges on the insignias with testors black, and exhaust streaks with RLM 81 "braunviolet".

The only issue I had was fitting the turret into the fuselage. The instructions called for the turret to go in before the canopy is attached, but I left my turret off to make painting easier. I had to really work to get the turret into the fuselage after I had put the canopy on. I ended up having to pry the turret glass off of the ring in order to seat the ring. But everything turned out alright and I'm very happy with the results. Thanks again to all of you guys for the positive vibes- I had a blast in this group build and I can't wait to see the rest of your builds!

Theuns

Jack, yes it is of 540 Sqn RAF based from what I could read up on Gibraltar, hence the heavy fading in the Med.

Theuns

That is a lovely looking Mossie, and having served myself in Gib, can testify how quick a plywood kite would fade! Well done Theuns.

Best Regards

mawright, my two cents on your peeling paint....

I think it's more the mm primer than the humbrol paint. Model Master does not, so far as I am aware, make any acrylic primer. They make a grey color called primer which is confusing and it isn't really a primer.

I had a mess like you showed us once, and it was a result of using the mis-named mm "primer". I switched to real primers (Tamiya, alclad, Stynylrez, etc. and have not had a paint peel since (knock wood)

Reason for late reply, been out of town again. Hope you have things sorted out, a peel mess like this is heartbreaking.

Rocker, decals looks sharp on that dark bird. Yes

Hi Bish,

I'm down for an Airfix Chipmunk, but I'd like to change up to a Matchbox Meteor Night Fighter please.  I've got some Xtradecals for it.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

mawright, do you have the Airfix kit in your stash? I haven't run into any big problems with it yet- but the decals have a tendency to silver a little bit.

And speaking of Decals, I spent the weekend putting all of them on.

Scott - Awesome job on that SE5!

Lewbud - That Tempest looks fantastic - and you've got great taste in films!

I had a few days off after Thanksgiving to work on my Defiant. The masking kit I ordered arrived in the mail, and I've since primed and painted the model. Rather than use black paint out of a jar, I opted for the cheap alternative. I grabbed a can of testors flat black spray paint and went to town. My Defiant is all one color, so I figured why not use a rattle can?

Things went great until I got a finger print on one of the wings. I ended up taking thinner to the WHOLE wing and started over from scratch.Super Angry

I've since attached the prop, antennas, landing gear, and exhaust tubes. I'll be ready to give this thing a clear coat tomorrow night. The exhaust tubes were painted with testors rust, and then dry brushed with flat black.

Bish

Will be great to have you on board. I have been thinking that 2 aircraft this GB could really do with are a Hunter and a Lightning. So it would be great to get at least one of them.

Well if that is the case, I still need to find at least a bang seat for my Academy Hunter. The kit seat is undersized. The Airfix Lightning in my stash is the late version. For some reason I’m all into early jets right now in my head.

Bish, i sure am thinking of jumping in with something appropriate. It would probably be after Christmas at the soonest when I can start. I’m thinking either a DeHavilland Vampire F.1 or Hawker Hunter F.6. Both are 1/48, of course...

Wow! What a great GB and thread! I don’t know how I missed this earlier.... But there sure does appear to be a shortage of early jets here...

Thanks for the comments gents.

Jack,

The yellow spinner was one of the reasons I chose it, adds a bit of color.  Had the kit decals been usable, one of the options was a red spinnered a/c with a big Free French cross on the nose.
