So this is the comparison. Got the Lightning decal sheet and the deeper blue on a test piece. Might have added a bit too much black, its gone a little murky. But I will do a test shot on the light blue sprue you see at the back left.

Thanks Jack,

Don't have the right colour, that was my darkest blue. To do the filter I would need to do a test piece, so instead I will try mixing the right shade. If that doesn't work, off to the LHS...

LA, if you have a proper roundel blue paint already, then yes just do a repaint.

If you want to try a filter, it would basically be a thinned down paint that you would spray over the current blue.  Just like mixing your own paint shade, do some tests on a scrap piece and see if you can get the proper results.  Maybe just try a thinned down red at first, if it's not dark enough, try a drop of black in it as well.

Jack

That's very frustrating Gam, it will turn up as soon as you get a replacement...

Jack, You are right, the blue should match the roundels. Some of the photos the blue is lighter, but so are the roundels. Frustration is, I put a splot of the colour I used on the instructions to see how it matched and it looks a lot darker than how it came out - maybe I didn't mix it enough.

How do you suggest I go about the filter? I've not tried one before. I will have a go but may end up repainting.

LA, looking good there.

Going by the instruction's illustration and period photos, seems the blue should match the roundel colour?  Maybe just a thin red filter would bring it closer ...

AA: I'm so sorry to hear that. They're more than a pet- they're a member of the family.

LA: Love the Lightning, the blue tail looks fantastic and the different colours of NM show up well in your second photo.

PS: Sorry to whine but I've been looking high and low for the missing gear well door and spinner for the past two weeks. I've pulled my work area apart, the area where I airbrush, and went though a bunch of other kit boxes thinking maybe they got tossed in there some how. I'm at the point now I'm not as much annoyed at the missing parts as just wondering where on earth they could have went off too. Too bad Leonard Nimoy passed away- I'd like to send him 'In Search Of' all these parts that just vanished.

Sad news there AA, he's a lovely looking lab.

Stik, good work on those seams, coming along well.

Managed to get a bit more painting done, colours are on letting it set before the decalling. The blue could be deeper, although looking at photos Airfix's blue is too dark.

Sorry to hear that AA, we have several 4 legged friends, but of the feline and equine variety. The models can wait.

Bish,

I know I said I’d get the rest of my figures done and final pics posted this week, but unfortunately, real-life events have intruded.  My 14+years old Labrador has seen his health suffer a serious decline over the past week, to the point where we will visit the vet tomorrow for the last time.  So I have tried to spend a lot more time with him over the last few days to comfort him in his final days.  I will pick back up and finish in a few days; until then, if you have a four-legged best friend, be sure to hold them extra close, as you don’t know how much time you’ll have with them.  Crying

SP: Nice work there on the scribing. And yeah I use the liquid cement too to smooth out any rough areas of the sanding.

Stik, nice close ups of your work on the panel lines.  May I suggest (or maybe you already know) to lighty pass some liquid cement over the corrected lines - just helps clean things up a bit more.

regards,

Jack

Jack, Im not aware of what your referring to with the cement? Can you give a brief explanation please?

Actually it would be extra thin cement, but yeah, what it does is smooth out the scribing, and possibly return to a thinner line with that coat of cement. It can also aid in seeing some imperfections before hitting with primer/paint.

Jack

“Winged egg of death...” LOL! Yes it is! Pilots actually nicknamed the Vampire “Flying Kiddie Car”, which the egg certainly resembles...

Thanks also to Bish, Jack, and Lost for your feedback. Lost, your Lightning looks sweet in the BMF that you applied. Excellent work!

Surprisingly enough, the wing seam sanding went rather quickly.... thank goodness for CA accelerator to help where I neede some filler. Especially on the upper left wing over the intake. There was a step there...

Now I just need to rescribe some lost panel line detail and I’ll then be ready to get the tail booms attached.

Jack: I love the bowed fabric look! And good luck with the gear, I can imagine that the putty would be a good bit heavier than the original parts.

SP: Nice work there on your Winged Egg Of Death... um vampy... Wink

LA: Love the NM finish there! After the Day-Glo orange and white on your civvie Cobra and now the NM finish here I think I need to take lessons from you on doing difficult paint schemes.

And thanks everyone. I've looked everywhere for the missing parts. There are six parts to the landing gear doors and I was worried about losing the small parts- this is one of the large sections though. And I just painted the friggin' spinner the other day!

Stik, thanks, and excellent use of the shims on the wings.

Lost, thanks, and nice to see you got past the orange peel problem.  Good job on toning down the contrast on the various metallic paints.

--------------------------------

Also, thank you tempestjohnny, Greg, and Bish.

Speaking of added weight, yep the camel now is back heavy from all that putty in the rear.  Unlike the real thing, which was really nose heavy with the pilot, fuel, guns/ammo, and engine sitting up front.
The tail skid is pretty thin, and it already broke in half a while ago.  I will need to pin it back in with some brass rod.  Otherwise the main landing gear struts look to be sufficient to handle the extra weight.

regards,
Jack

Lost, Thanks for the kind words! Yes, the Albion refueler is the Airfix kit. And the Hawker Hurricane Mk. I's gun bays are really nice, the highlight of the Airfix kit of same. I also have to mention that the radio antennas were made from E-Z Line, my first time using the product, and I can't recommend it highly enough! Still working on figures, will have more pics later in the week.

Bish, no surprise, I'm not finished in time, thanks for another great GB, I will get the Lightning done and posted soon…

Jack, yet again, such great work, all of the stages are superb how to lessons, picking up techniques left right and centre. Please make sure the undercarriage is strong enough to support this great piece of modelling!

Stik, the vampire is shaping up well, does look wierd without the tail booms on.

iSteve, That is a super finish, the paint has come up really well, and the decals do set in very well. The staining issue is a real bugger haven’t experienced it before, but one to watch out for. Very fine work on the canopy masking – great result. Interesting that you are using the Gunze without thinning, I use it thinned about 50/50 with either Taniya acrylic thinner or Gunze’s levelling lacquer thinner 400(for the gloss). Takes forever to set with the 400 though. I will look at your technique to see if I can improve my painting results. Good to see your tip for wax paper and worms, that could be a lot quicker than taping everything up.

TJ, very well done, ripper job on the plastic wooden wonder.

Gamera, I thought it was only me that does things like that…The finish looks fantastic, looking forward to a complete rig soon.

Bob, I like the desert camo on the ‘hawk.
AA, the diorama is looking great, looking forward to the finished product. Is the Albion lorry an Airfix kit? The detail in the Hurricane’s gun bays is really well done, and the figures look super.

Castel, sounds like a fast rig you’ve got. Even if it is not the latest, still a very good quality set up. I have got Campy Athena 11s on my carbon road bike, I'm not going back to Shimano, but Campy does need TLC.

Eric, Nice work with the black basing, I have followed down the same path for a Wyvern over in the Fleet Air Arm GB, I am finding it pretty labour intensive but a rich, deep finish. Like Jack says, I need to work out how to transfer the effect to the markings too. It must be taking you an absolute age on a model that size!

Thanks for the kind words guys, my issues with priming have been around getting an orange peel finish on the Vallejo Surface Primer (a gloss black primer). It is my issue I am sure, I need to take time from producing models and have a go at trying various mixes, pressures, flows and methods on a test piece to get a good gloss finish. May even unwrap the double action I bought five years ago, but haven’t tested out yet - trouble is there is barely enough time to complete the GBs I sign up for let alone all those I would like to do, but I’m not alone in that! Over Easter I upgraded the lighting in the shed where I airbrush, having identified that as one of my issues. I have also bought some of the Vallejo airbrush drying retarder since, and used it when I did the metal coats you see below. I think it helped?
After rubbing down the primer as best I could, I put on a coat of Vallejo metal effects Duraluminium. It went on really well, but did show up the orange peel in those spots where I couldn't reach with the emery paper.
A couple of days later, I had no trouble masking off a few panels and applying contrasting metallics.
I found that was a bit too contrasty though...
The middle of the wing is a mix of matt aluminium and the duraluminium. It came up looking like a slightly metallic grey though, so a mist coat was used to tone it all back in. Also did a few chrome highlight panels and a bit of variation in the belly. I'm pretty happy with teh effect.
So as you can see we are getting closer...

That is some awesome work there Jack! That is an incredible way to replicate such a surface and effect.

I understand that this GB is now closed but I’m still plugging along on my Vampire. I’ll keep posting my updates here.

Starting to take shape now! The wings are on!!!!

I had to use some shims on the lower seam to insure proper dihedral.

Now comes the seam clean up,,, lots on this one....
