Nice save Check

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Greg:  isn't PE fun?  Well done!

Steve:  progress is coming along nicely; looking good

damouav:  remarkble cockpit!  Nice work!

Toshi:  slick looking paint work on the props

More on the Hampden landing gear.  These have to be assembled and dropped into the lower wing before closing up with the upper wing.

Unfortunately, with the wheels installed, a gap is created in that bar that surrounds the rear of the tires.

You can see even without the wheel that there's a slight refusal of the parts to match.

So I masked that part with blue tack.

Inserted some styrene rod, and sanded things down.

But you'll notice I got some unwanted black marring on the nice gray tire when I stuffed them into the landing gear.  So I re-masked with tacky stuff and touched up.

Finally got them done, and painted the repaired area by hand with black acrylic paint.

Thank you sir.  It was all brush work.

Toshi

Nice fix, CMK.

I'm always interested to see how folk correct various issues, it's fun to read about. Even more so when there is a nice, layout-style step-by-step like yours here to follow. Yes

Were those the OOB kit tires?

Damian I'm going to be watching your Mossie build. I have the, same kit half built for the last two years. Maybe watching you will motivate me to finish it

You humble me.

The Tamiya 1/48 Mossie is a really great build, I haven't had any significant issues to date to sort out. When you get back to it you will enjoy the build.

Hey Gamera,

The fact that the Mossie was built mainly from laminated ply, glued and screwed together shows how innovative  De Haviland really was. As metal availability was limited the use of wood, and the manner in which the airframe was constructed is just amazing for the period.

I know there where many great aircraft during WW2, but the Mossie is in the top 5 IMPO.

I really want to build the 1/32 Tamiya to pay homage to this remarkable aircraft.

When you get a chance, add one to your collection.

And, Thank You.

My grandmother,  during the war, ferried pilots to the planes and moved aircraft around on the tarmacs.  The used to tell me of the Mossies coming in to land for the first time, and how wonderful they were!  Those were her favorite ones!

CMK02: Nice recovery there! I wouldn't have even noticed if you hadn't pointed it out.

Damouav: Yeah, the Mosquito was truly an amazing aircraft. And a very sleek attractive machine. I don't have any excuse for not having one, for some reason I have about a half dozen Spits in the stash and not one Mossie. Embarrassed

I have some updates on sundry build elements like main gear, undercarriage doors, props etc.

Undercoated all parts with black primer, AB Tamiya AS12 (Bare Metal Silver) were applicable. Used Ultracast tyres all round which provide far better detail than OOB. Used a heavily diluted black oil paint for weathering. I was going to use PE mud guards, but they didnt fit properly, so I used the kit versions and drilled holes in the upper gusset to match photos I have on hand. Both landing gear will get some minor weathering before I coat them MRP Matt varnish.

I removed the molded hinges and bent these really small PE ones, I have some touch up painting to do which can wait till I install them at the end of the build. I attempted to remove the injector pin holes, poorly. But when the Mossie is on it legs you will never see the inner doors, so no real problem.

The props painted and ready to mount, i couldnt sight any livery to place on the props unlikely US props of the same era. Minor wear to be added to the leading edge, then done.

Coming along nicely there Damian. I usually go for resin wheels, especially when the kit ones are 2 piece, but never tried Ultracaste. They look nice.

Don't seem to see them much here. I tend to mainly use Aires and True Details for wheels. Will have to have a better look for them.

Rolling around laughing so hard the dog thinks I'm having a fit.

Accidental you say, three or four times you say...

It would have been so much more cathartic to hit it with a big hammer.

I've used Ultracast many times and if I had to compare them to Aires or True Details, I would say they are superior, IMPO. They tend to offer a great many items you simply can't get anywhere else. They are all nice though.

Damian, wow, super nice work there.

TJ, well, accidents happen. If you had said 5 times I would be suspicious of your true motive.

Greg, sorry to have missed yours. That is some great detail on the framework. Super nice.

CM, nice fix on the landing gear. I'm not sure that would have come to my mind. Well done.

Thanks for the generous comments on the Hampden's landing gear fix.

Greg:  yes, the tires and wheels are the kit components.  A little sparse, detail wise.

tj:  a tragedy with the Tornado; hope it receives a decent burial.

Now there's a good story. Yes

Johnny, I'd mentioned you would prevail through your kit difficulties. You did, proving there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Damian, those landing gear assy's look great. But so do the props and I see you have your own fiddly PE parts to deal with (PE hinges).

I couldn't understand why this kit was so bad until I went on Scalemates and saw it was a 1977 mold. Horrible. But I only paid $10 so it was worth it for the markings which I will use on a better kit

Ouch TJ! I know how you feel though. I probably would have turned the thing into a British Kamikaze by launching her at the wall on the other side of the room...

Note to self, when I buy a Tornado don't chose the Italeri kit.

Crash and burn. From the 1970's, i reckon they must have built it before seeing the real thing.

You weren't doing John Nichol aircraft were you. Be very fitting if you were.

O well, a jag it is. I am happy with that. And nice to see a twin seater. Are you doing the 54 Sqn aircraft on the box.

Sir, that just made my weekend!! (and I'm taking a week off for some fun and sun) I built the Testors Tornado...I'm guessing it's the Italeri rebox. Didn't get "accidently" stepped on, but is in "The Tote of Mediocrity"

http://imgur.com/0LeDgctAlmost ready for primer. Got some sanding and touch-up to do. Have used a lot of tape and time to get this "turd" of a model to look right. Having fit issues would be an understatement. I think the technical term is "cattywompis"....Now for a little vacation!Cool

I am looking forward to that. I have not seen one in all grey before, i have markings for 3 Coltishall based Jags from 1991 and they are in the wrap around camo. So i will be keen to see a grey one.
