I haven't seen that kit since I was a member of the model of the month club.  Congratulations on finishing it.

Bufflehead... Yeah aircraft are different, See, I feel the same way about armor. A hint... I use a "Lazy Susan" to build on. you can avoid a ton of handling with that little item! All in all I think it came out good. Only so much we can do in a weekend, but thats the whole idea! lol...

SteveCB Capri loos good, I wouldnt attempt a car on a 48 hr build! Hats off to ya!

LT... Hang in there. You blow up...I try to see how far they can fly! lolol...

That's a pretty good job in the timeframe Steve, I don't think I could do that.

It's good to hear that you're going to go again LT, I've had a few misses in this one over the years but always managed to get one done.

I think you made a good decision Ernest, and your Zeke look good again in 48 hours.

If this thing is open after Christmas, I have some time off and could nominate an arbitrary 'weekend' to give it another crack, but I don't mind if it's not.

With over 18 hours to spare, but I'll be at work then.

Well, with limited time remaining and both kits at the same stage, I had to make an executive decision.  I estimated that I could complete ONE kit by the 6 PM deadline, so I stopped work on the Mustang and focused on the Zero as I felt it had the better chance of being done in time. 

It was a close run thing and everything seemd to be going well!  In fact there was 8 minutes on the clock as I was pulling the last of the canopy masks off, when DISASTER STRUCK!  The DREADED paint on finger struck again!  I didn't notice that a bit of silver paint was on a finger and sure enough, it got on the model!  ARRGH!!.  I cleaned it up as best I could, but it definitely noticable in front of the windshield

If I have time and desire I might try to repair it, but its time to move on and call it complete.

I'm an armor nut and have only built one AC kit before this.  There's definitely a different build process for AC and I wasn't well prepared for them.  I'm going to have to get some more tools to help with this.  The biggest problem I had was holding the aircraft while working on them (silver paint)...I dropped them both a couple of times while handling them.  I usually don't have the problem with armor as I have ways to securely mount them during the paint and weathering process.  Live and learn!!

That's it for me!  I'm booked for the remaining weekends, no time for modeling.

Thanks lewbud for hosting the GB again!  It was a blast and I even built some AC

Sorry to hear about problems with your kit littletimmy, I feel for you. 

The kit wasnt the problem . It was all me.

Other than the ill fitting cowl, the kit has good fit all around. It's my first Heller kit and I can reccommend it to anybody.  I didn't have to use filler anywhere on the fusalage, except on the engine cowl.... and even that was probably my fault. The wing's did need a little TLC tho...

The only "Real" problem is the canopy. The framework is only half there.

Sorry to hear about problems with your kit littletimmy, I feel for you.  I'm in the same boat with my Round 4 entries.  Looks like I bit off a little too much in trying to complete two kits....I should have stuck with just one!  With two hours to go I just finished putting the decals on.  Still have to let them dry, then give them both a clear finish and add the rest of the details.  I MIGHT make the deadline if I eliminate the panel wash I was planning.  We'll see.....

There is too much stuff going wrong with my plane to fix in time. I got in too much of a hurry and the paint ran ! Plus the engine cowl just will not line up right  so I'm going to have to "hack " it off and try again.

Dont worry tho..... It's too interesting a subject to "Blow up" so I will finish it. Just don't know when.

It's not that I'm a perfectionist. I just dont work well with deadlines.... I panic and start messing up.

I do have a few more kits that I might try again  for round 5 or 6.

I will "happily" wear my FAILURE badge......  I would rather do it right ...... than turn in an "Abomination" !

I did session one, decided to jump into session 4 with a Capri.  I had a '73 back in high school.  This isn't an exact match, but it's the only one I ever found.  It's a simple kit with no engine. 

So I don't actually have 48 hours available to finish it, so it I have to really buckle down.

First attempt on the body, it didn't work as well as I wanted.  Off it came.

The interior went together nice. 

Resprayed the body, started with a silver base, then the British green, which is close to what my car was. 

Still not as smooth as I would like, but it will have to do.  Just waiting for everything to dry now, then I will put it all together.  Thanks

Tony... Thank you so much for the very nice comment. I hope that I can help others to improve they're skills as others have helped me over the years. Not trying to brag, and I'm far from where I'd really like to be, but no one is born with the skills of our hobby, but usually are born with the ability. There is alot of talent here and I'm just happy to be part of this group of builders.

Bufflehead... Thank you sir. I guess what helps with the speed is being able to organize and know what I can do ahead of time Like glueing certain parts first so they are ready to assy when I need them. I also almost exclusively use acrylic paints which dry much faster then oils. You,ve got a pretty ambitious project going on and they look like they are proceding nicely! Keep up the good work!

Dang Rigidrider!  You are one fast builder!  Can't believe you got the B-109G done so quick AND looking great too! 

Love the comments on the "trademark thumbprint"!!  I think we all have our special trademark on most of our builds!!

23 hours in and assembly is done on both kits.  Here are some WIP photos from earlier today:

I should be able to get paint on the Zero tonight.  Not sure about the Mustang.....it will be very first time doing a metal finish on a model!!

Doug, the 109G is very impressive for a weekend job, or any job for that matter. I love your modelling skills.

Great work!  I wish I could build this weekend but prior commitments just don't leave me time.  I still want to do one more.  If we are still going next weekend I will make the time.

Yeah, but it "IS" my trademark.  But normally I leave it someplace  where you wont see it !

Spent a few minutes sanding and scraping and re-shot the paint...... then walked away from it...... I can't bear to look at it right now.

The Instructions ( If they could be called that ) say the underside should be Steel Grey. With the inside of the gear door's Grass Green..... what an "Odd"  combination.

I may "Imagineer" a slightly different camo.

That's a mighty fine Gustav you've got there!  Well done sir!  I can think of a couple of other GB's that would fit in as well.  I'd take it over to Stik's Monogram Mafia and show the Don your fine work on a classic kit. He might make you an offer you can't refuse, but you won't be sleeping with the fishes.

That 109 looks great. Especially with plenty of time to spare. Impressive bud.

Little Timmy, I personally have never seen a Heller kit. I've heard both good and bad about them. Looks like yours is coming along nicely! 

Buffle head, Two at once? My hats off to you. Lewbud did the two 190Ds and I'm amazed... Even during a regular GB I have issues trying to do two at a time, Looking forward to the end results!

OK, so here is my "Part 4" entry. Its a Monogram Bf109G , 1/48th scale. Very basic kit, but decent representation of the subject. 

Get everything out that needs gluing and paint to assy, and get them drying.

Start assy. tape across wing tips closes the minor wingroot gap and sets the diehedral.

Again, this is the abreviated showing, But legs and doors are attached and I've sprayed the 76 on the undersides and the fuselage sides.

Start applying the Deep Green to the upper fuse and wings.

81 Brown violet applied.

Motteling done.

Starting decals, Defense of Reich band indicates Jg300.

Decals on and setting solution still has them a bit wrinkly.

And we finished up this morning... Choice of finished picture is yours Lewbud... These weekend builds are different but fun to do. Thanks for looking and probably no more building till the New Year for me. Traveling in the stars! lol... Have a good Christmas/Newyear, Holiday season all! Looking forward to the New Year!

I've built a couple of those kits. You can improve the fit if you either enlarge the holes or reduce the diameter of the posts used to join the wings to the fuselage.  You'll still have a nasty joint to fill, but it won't be as bad.

Alrighty!  Round 4 here we come!  I decided to try my hand at aircraft in this round, so here are my entries:   Two 1/72 Hobby Boss kits, the P-51D Mustang and the Type 52 Zero

and we're off!  Started at 6 PM PST, Friday Dec.15

I felt a little guilty doing just one of these because the parts count is so low for each and these are "Easy Assembly" kits that really simplify the build.  Also I was inspired by Lewbud completing his two captured FW-190Ds so I decided to challenge myself to do the same (crossing fingers).  Here's a better pic of the low parts count for both kits:

The nearly complete molded fuselage/cockpit of the Mustang will definitely cut down the time needed to complete this kit!!  Is this cheating??

Next post should be late tonight before hitting the sack!

 O.K.  I "FINALLY" hav some time for this sooooooo......

IT'S ALIVE !!!

My phone and my camera are in sync.... well..... the camera is 1 minute fast. But it's the clock I will be going by so please note the time in the bottom right hand corner for the rest of this build.

Proof I didnt start the kit untill now.

There ain't much to it so most of my time will be "eaten up " by paint some time tomorrow. Also: The canopy has some "soft" to non-existant detail. The framework is only "sorta" there so I will be making my own..... that ought to  slow me down !

The progress so far....

The Fusalage went together pretty good. Only going to need a small amount of filler.

 The wing's needed some coaxing.....

The prop has a "bead" of glue run-off  that you cant see in the picture, but I'm going to have to sand it down a bit.

As far as the cockpit detail is concerned...... THIS IS IT !

Sorry about the focus on some of the pictures..... still figuring out my $1.99 camera !

That's all for now. ran out of light in the shop. "Hopefully"  I will have Electricity ..... at least duct taped to the wall.... some time tommorow morning.

Round Four is open for business gentlemen! Dad is coming to town this weekend so I won't be building. Looks like next weekend maybe it for the build, unless there is demand. To those who still have uncompleted stuff, please keep working on it.  When it's done, post the pics and I'll put it on the Refused to Quit page.

Lewbud... Nice completion! The "D" has always been a very sleek looking aircraft, and in the colors and patterns you chose they look even better! Gotta love brittle decals ... 

Bufflehead... Thanks...I saw this paint in a book, and even the kit contained a litho picture of two schemes, but both pictures appered to be more heavily covered in brown, even though the nmf was still visible through the finish. I just made it a bit more even between the colors. And thanks , I like this one too. The Arri/Otaki kits are really fairly well designed and easy to build.
