Gentlemen,

I apologize for being awol. Between family, work, and modeling blahs, I haven't even looked at my bench in 3 weeks. But, I'll do my best to catch up.

@Ghost,

Both bikes look amazing! I really like the paint jobs! Great job!

@John,

That Panigale turned out fantasic. The colors on the exhaust are very realistic. It makes me want to take it for a spin!

@Greg,

The fix for the break line is perfect. Hey, you can always leave the chain guard off! Just a thought!

@GM,

I really looking forward to seeing that RC166 take shape!

I have three GB to finish before the end of the year, so I have to get my tail in gear. And the MotoGP season starts next year on March 10th in Qatar. The Doctor will not be happy with me if I don't have his mount ready!

Well I did a stupid thing. When will I learn?

I stripped all of the chrome parts which should be aluminum, in prep for Alclad. Dried them. Primed with gloss black. I ran out of square black Testors about halfway through, so I rummaged around in the shed and found a rattle can of Krylon Gloss Black. At this point I should have heard Mr. Bill...

"Noooooooooooooooo...."

Got everything painted. Waited the required five days. During which time I went by a HL and bought out their square bottle gloss black shelf.

Today was warm and sunny. Set up the a/b, layed out the various Alclads, charged the cup and sprayed the parts. Within 1/2 hour I had the worst orange peel you've ever seen.

Currently stripping it all again.

Stupid stupid stupid.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Ouch!  That's a shame.  Was it not smooth enough or was a lacquer Vs ? Issue

Thanks,

John

Geez, Bill. When a seasoned modeler like you has an incident, it makes me feel human.

Sorry to hear. I'm with John, not quite sure what did it. Was the Krylon the culprit, and if so, why? Does it not play well with Alclad? (I've done home repair touch-ups with Krylon as a lad**, that's about it (**read, under 50).

FWIW, I've had numerous strip and re-do's on this motorcycle kit, and it's all been due to chrome and various Alclad issues, all of which have been operator error, not Alclad problems.

I have faith, you'll get it all squared away.

Speaking of black paint, my frame is all lacquered up and nowhere to go.

The frame was fun to build. Hit the already black stryrene with one coat of black Alclad primer (I love that stuff), then brushed on (ahem, clearing throat....Future 50:50 to water), mostly becauseI didn't want to waste more Alclad Black getting the finish as glossy as desired.

Greentracker,

Can I change the kit I'm doing for this? I was building a little C100 to mark its 60th anniversary but I seem to have lost its forks.

Can I build this CX500 turbo instead? Some 80s nostalgia, plus very little chrome to contend with and a big plus is that it's shaft drive. No chain to break and ruin!

I love Tamiya bike kits but the screws are somtimes aggravating.

I want to replace this mounded mesh with something more convincing but there's a screwhole through it. This is when a nice relaxing build turns into an exercise in frustration.

I've never seen a tamiya motorcycle kit that I recall, and have wondered about the screws, holes, and locations. They've been mentioned in this thread before, perhaps by you.

Sorry for your frustration, but thanks for showing an example pic.

Sorry if it's come up before Greg - I'm new to posting on forums so please let me know if I'm out of order. I don't mind screws when they're used as axles or in discrete places and easily hidden, but holding the fairings on? Anyway, it'd be less rewarding if it was too easy, right?

Out of order? Heck no! Only thing out of order around here is my mind.

Only reason I mentioned that seems like somebody mentioned screws before is if it was you, didn't want anyone to think I was ignoring their previous comment is all.

FSM has friendly folk, no need to be timid. We're happy as heck to have you here and this place is nothing without folk contributing.

Dropped some subassys on the frame.

Apologies for bad cell phone pic.

On a side note, I lost a small part. Looking for it prompted me to half-way clean up the bench for the first time in uh, 2-3 yrs maybe. Nothing great, but you should have seen it before. Ta da.

And the best news? Tonight I thought to check the chrome stripping container and the missing part was there. Win-win. It was a good day. Stick out tongue

Looking at the real thing, there are screens that look pretty much like the raised detail, but also readily see-thru. Diamond pattern perf.

Dang Greg, your half cleaned bench looks 10X better than my cleaned bench.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

MacAtilla - that's an unfortunate choice for a screw for sure.  Seems like the later kits are a bit more subtle and not smack dab in the middle of screening!

The Ninja for instance has a couple screws in locations that could be easily covered up, but yours is a bit of a challenge.

Thanks,

John

Could some PE wire mesh be cut, painted, and placed over the area to hide the screw?

Hey Steve, thanks buddy (re the bench) I hardly recognize it myself. Wink

Progress has been made. After stripping all of the parts that will get Alclad AGAIN, they've been painted with Testors Gloss Black enamel. It'll be 7 days on Saturday, so I think that I can polish them then and shoot some silver.

Next I've painted the yellow bits. They are due for another coat of Future, but I'm happy with the look.

So, the join of the bug screen to the fairing just makes no sense the way the model is designed.

Looking at the real deal, the fairing has a lip into which the screen fit, and gets clamped with a strap. It's beyond reason to do all of that to the kit part, my plan is to add a strip of BMF around the top of the fairing, and some rivet heads. Some bikes have a metal trim around the headlight window, others don't. I don't like the looks of it, so I'll make my bike look like this one.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Looking good GM. So the windscreen has no locating pins? Curious. Looking forward to the finished product. Unlike the later model race bikes you get to see all the engine details on this one.

Thanks,

John

Thanks. No pins and a bad fit to boot. I could add detail all day, like the rubber trim around the inside edge of the fairing or the fairing mounting bracket on the bars, but I want to get her built.

Yes, I think the Commando is one of the best looking bikes ever made in any quantity. A real Brit. Something special about a 750 cc twin.
