C-47 Skytrain/Dakota/DC-3 GB

Although I'm not building one I drop in routinely and check out everyone's builds. Some really great version of the C-47. I stopped into the MAPS museum in Canton OH this week. They have the Ruptured Duck on display. In better weather you can climb inside. Thought I'd drop a pic in here and let anyone know if they'd like a walk-around I could grab lots of detailed shots on one of my trips. I'm around there usually every month.

After a long intermission I'm back to the R4D.  I sanded down the old Airfix giant rivets and started assembling things.

Mini Whiskey 7#2 is all done!  Phew.  Now I just have to make a permanent enclosed home for it.  It will be part of a display with two other planes I plan on building that also call the museum home.

A ton of pics...........

Wheel chocks, pitot static tube cover, gust locks, antenna, flags, stairs, various scoops on the fuse, anti-collision light interior seats, tubes on the exhaust, some of the cockpit and donation bomb were all scratch built.  I used PE flaps, PE interior and exterior.  Paints were a mix of Model Master enamels, Tamiya acrylics, and acrylic craft paint.  Thanks for looking!

Mini W7 #2 now has her legs, and some weathering. 

Gust locks are almost ready to go.

Thanks Tanker!  It really does help to have the real one to look at.  It also makes you much more picky when it comes to the details!

Last update until Monday.  I am going to go visit the real Whiskey 7 tomorrow. 

Got the rest of the markings on this afternoon.  Still need to throw a flat coat on it, but I'm letting it dry for now.

Should have her finished up next week.

Things were a bit slow going yesterday.  Working on all the little details now.  Having some issues with getting decals to print properly too.  Still trying to sort that out. 

I did manage to get the red around the escape windows painted, along with the fuel caps, wing walks, and the chalk number.

Normally I go work on the real Whiskey 7 on Saturdays, but we are having some weather move through the area, and I think it might be in my best interest to stay home.  If I do I'll spend tomorrow working on Mini W7.

Been busy plugging away at Mini W7 the past few days.  Hoping to have her finished up by the end of the week. 

Engines all wired up.

Scratch made some wheel chocks.  Still working on a few other things.

Painted the inside of the cargo doors, and the flaps.

Spent all of today masking and painting the W7 and R.  I'm not entirely thrilled with how it came out, but I know better than to mess with it.  I have a few touch ups to do still.

I need an easier way to make masks rather than a hobby knife.  Hopefully I can make some more progress tomorrow.

Put a gloss coat on, and started wiring the engines before the weekend came.  Along with painting some of the other little bits.  Still tons to do, but I'm hoping to have her finished up soon.  In the final stretch now.

Mini Whiskey 7 #2 now has her signature colors!  I have some touch ups to do, but overall I'm happy with the outcome.  Mixing the paint is probably the most frustrating part.  At one point I comtemplated taking the craft paint with me to the museum tomorrow to match the colors, lol.  But the lighting in the hangar isn't that great and the variations would be too much to match to real life. 

I'm pretty surprised how close I got the colors to the first Mini Whiskey 7.

She's going to sit for the weekend once I put a gloss coat on.  I have the real Whiskey 7 to go work on tomorrow, and my car on Sunday. 

After roughly 3 hours of masking and a lot of burnishing tape edges, Mini W7 #2 has her deicing boots, and invasion stripes!  Whew.  That was a pain in the rump.  Next will be painting the rudder, and upper surfaces of the ailerons and elevators, then her signature colors.  Hope to have her painted by the weekend.

Thanks!  It took me forever.  I hate doing the putty, sand, prime, repeat rountine.  So I'd work on it for an hour or two, then not touch it for a week or more, lol.

Primed the landing gear, and some other bits.

Got the underside of Mini W7 painted, can't really tell since I masked everything off to lay down the white for the invasion stripes. 

I'm hoping I can get some time later on today to start masking off for the black in the invasion stripes.  It's an ass backwards way of painting, but if you followed along with the first Mini Whiskey 7 you'll know I used acrylic craft paint to match Whiskey's unique colors.  I prefer not to mask over that paint if I can avoid it.  I will have to when it comes to painting the W7 on the fuse, and the R on the tail.

Finally some progress to report.  I haven't been getting much time at the bench, but I managed to get up there for almost all of today.

I'm finally done with the putty, sand, prime, repeat routine.  What a pain in the butt that was.  I'm happy with how it looks now, so I'm ready for paint.  I got most of the PE glued on, and some of the scratch made fiddly bits.  Still a few more to do. 

Most of the PE flaps are ready to go.  Still have two more sections to build. 

She should see Whiskey 7's signature colors this week.  Finally.  Lol.

I'm still not sure how some of you guys can work on stuff that is so small!  Came out nice!

Sorry I've been super stupid busy the past month and haven't had any time at my bench.  Now that hunting season, and holiday festivities are over I can finally go back to my regulary scheduled programming! 

So I spent some time today doing the whole prime, putty, sand repeat rountine.  Round #1 complete.  Things are looking better, but I'm going to have a few more rounds to do before I'm happy with it.

I finally finished, actually a few weeks ago.  Here's how the little R4D-5 turned out.

I have a complete airplane now, and a lot of work to make it pretty!  I've got some fairly decent sized gaps to fill, a lot of seam sanding, and some gouges that I made while cutting out the hatch to fix.  I usually don't show the "ugly".  But I figured this time, why not?!  I've been down this road with the first one, and I managed, so I'm sure I can manage this one too.

The other side ft nice and snug, with just a little "well" to fill, this side....not so much.

A couple of nasty gouges I made.  Oh well.

I also made a mess with the glue.  Again, not the first time, lol.

I'll likely get started on the putty, sand, prime repeat process tomorrow.

Thanks!  It's the little spec of yellow paint on the grey stretched sprue above the instrument panel, lol.  I honestly never even noticed it before, one of the other volunteers pointed it out!

I finished up the passenger seats.  I added the parachute that is kept behind the cockpit.

Glued the fuselage and wing halves together.

Well after a few of the other volunteers that help work on Whiskey 7 "requested" some additonal detail in the cockpit I added a few more things, lol.  Both of which are barely visible, but oh well.

The first was the landing gear lock release handle next to the pilot's seat on the floor.  The second thing was a very small yellow dinosaur that is on a bungee just above the intrustment panel.  I decided on my own to add the black binder, and the pouches for the headsets in the cubby above the red door. 

Some of the stuff is so small my camera won't focus on it, lol.  I've started working on the passenger seats, and hope to have those finished up and the fuse closed up in the next few days.

Just about done with the cockpit.  I few of the other volunteers had suggested a couple more things, lol.  One of which is literally going to be a small dob of paint, cause that it is so small in 1/48 that it doesn't matter, lol.

Got some painting done finally.  Glued a few bits in the cockpit as well.  Starting to look like Whiskey's cockpit.

Next up will be adding some more detail, hopefully sometime this afternoon if I can sneak away to the bench, lol.

Added the hydraulic plumping behind the co-pilot, and opted to also add the levers for the flaps, hydraulic hand pump, and landing gear.  I'll add the bottom two levers after everything is painted.  Then I threw a coat of primer on it.

Started to fiddle with some PE as well.

Next up will be some painting.
