Resurrection GB (Feeler)
Posted by Galatians 2:16 on Saturday, July 20, 2019 8:13 PM

So I was wondering if anyone else out there had an already built model that they wanted to strip down and redo. I wonder if you‘d like to throw your childhood/early practice/broken model into the mix with me and redeem that mess? Could be any model, any scale so long as it’s not what you want it to be and you’re up for a real challenge. I’m personally thinking of taking an old F/A 18 and turning it into a Blue Angel. Was a Revell I think. Snail

Day two: Baby Angel on the way. Have run into trouble with the canopy. May need to soak it in pure acetone to hopefully dissolve the excessive cement glue. If that fails, I may be forced to saw off the canopy......Snail

Hey thanks and no sweat guys. Feel free to join whenever. Wink This is just a feeler to see how many of you all would be interested. I’m thinking I’ll just plod along and see what comes up. Anybody can join me whenever they want (after finishing present stuff, during another build as a stress relief, or whatever.) Yes, perhaps a bit open-ended, but relaxed. See you later. I have a Boss 429 Mustang that I'm planning on doing that too. I just don't have it in the que at the moment and I'm not exactly sure when I will. I think this would be a good one to do over the winter months.

I know it’s your model to do as you please with, but.... arent the Blues still flying “legacy” Hornets, and not Super Hornets like your kit here?

I suppose one year soon they will have to transition to the new type....

just a thought.

As it is, I think the Blue Angels will be getting F/A-18Es and Fs in the near future.

I have a Russian armored car that is my sort of experimental model. It was green at first, then whitewash, now it is rust covered with bunch of bullet holes.

GB sounds good, just have to look and see which one would I change.

Welcome guys! I can’t wait to see your photos of your models.Big Smile They sound good. And yep, my model will end up being slightly futuristic but that’s part of what I’m looking forward to! It‘s gonna be a blast to see the real stuff come out while holding my model.   Stick out tonguePropeller

Update: I was successful in removing the canopy without any special liquid. It took a lot of pressure, but I finally forced it off with my x-acto knife. Next step: full soak in brake fluid to hopefully remove paint. Snail

BrandonK, great suggestion! Winter would be a good time to do this kind of project, right? Course, I’m still willing to take folks who’ve already begun. We can just start where we’re at. Snail

I looked it up after this post. They are slated to receive the E for the 2021 season, their 75th Anniversary. So this year and next year are the last seasons for the A/C Hornets. Which they have been flying since 1986! That is the longest of any anircraft type flown by them.

You can use brake fluid but its messy. I use Purple Power and let the parts soak for a few days. Take them out, rinse them in the sink. There will be NO paint left, and it pulls chrome off plastic parts too. Best part is there is no messy residue to deal with.

BK

This one was a nearly complete build my son started. Painted with rattle can and heavy clear laquer. Soaked all the parts for 3 days and rebuilt it to my taste. You should give the stuff a try.

Question: Does the Purple Power strip enamel paints, acrylic paints, or both?

It should do both. Tamiya lacquer just laughs at it.

Yeah I noticed different paints react differently to different paint stripper (well duh).  I also found Purple Power to be useless against Tamiya rattle can, but effective on enamels and chrome plating.  A friend wanted to redo the paint job on a 1/144 Gee Bee racer, so we chucked it whole into a container full of PP.  The red scalloped paint quickly dissolved, leaving the Tamiya white primer unscathed.  I had a similar experience with Tamiya's regular colors.  I switched to Easy Lift-Off (ELO) and it worked.  I don't have experience stripping acrylics much, but I have used diluted ammonia to good effect.

The resurrection GB is an interesting suggestion.  I have always marveled at people who can take a dust covered junker with broken pieces and refinish it to display stanards.  I have for a long time thought about taking the first Gundam type kit I built back in 1983 and tearing it back down with the purpose of giving it all new joints.  I wanted to keep the exterior as unchanged as possible to see how far just re-jointing it could improve its looks.  Plus I want to patch the bullet holes and fix the candle-melted shield!  Stick out tongue

Real G, Checkmateking02: Welcome! I’d love to see your candidates!

BrandonK: That is superb! I believe I will give it a try if I can find it at my local store. Thanks!

Real G: Thanks about the snail. Actually that picture is more like my dream for a pet (African Giant Snail). For now though, I have a nice inch and a half long garden snail named Humphrey. He’s part of the reason I like to close my statements with a snail. SnailSmile

P.S.: You all may end up seeing Humphrey in some of my future pictures.  Propeller

I have a Tamiya 1/35 King Tiger Production turret I’ve been meaning to  redo. So count me in.

It was my first tank I built after being out of the hobby for years. The camouflage is pretty rough along with the detail painting. I don’t have a photo at the moment as I’m out of the house. I’ll post one later on this evening if my brain remembers.

Here’s the King Tiger in its poor ambush scheme.

Was really rusty at airbrushing and a late war German camouflage probably wasn’t the best thing to start back on. Looking I have two grab handles to replace; the commanders and loaders. The model is also missing the engine deck frames for the intake grills. I ended up warping the parts trying to speed up the drying time after washing the dust off the tank. Taught me a valuable lesson never use the misses hair dryer! I’m not going to worry about replacing them and just say the factory rushed the tank out to the front.

Went ahead started taking the tank apart.

All of the tools came off pretty easy. The attachment points for the tools are going to need some light sanding to clean up. The road wheels are glued on and I’m not touching them. Don’t care to risk snapping the suspension arms.  The gun barrel has some noticeable seams lines that will need a little care. Other than that it shouldn’t be too difficult.
