Thanks,

How sad, and too young.  I sent an email to Elizabeth Nash asking if the GB could be retitled to something like the Larry Wolfe Memorial Close Air Support Group Build.

I just learned a few minutes ago the Lewbud Larry "Buddy" Wolfe II passed away on Jan 30.

Mopar Madness (Chad), mostly Chad, and I did some investigation and found this obituary.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/arlington-tx/larry-buddy-wolfe-10037737

The obit does not give a cause and Chad has put up a memoral thread in the Ready Room.

Rest in peace Buddy, you were a good friend of mine and had a very soft and giving heart.

That must have been a very scary airplane to fly. Very scary.

I don't know if its scary to fly, but being shot at by it....yes, very scary!

Nice work  John. Facinating how these aircraft designs evolved..would have loved to have been around back then...

Really love the last picture with the 3 kits and truck.  Is that the airfix p-39? Just curious...

That looks fab - very nicely done.  The Fleet Air Arm scheme is beautiful and the invasion stripes are the icing on the cakeCake!

Hi John, the A-18 looks great - that is an unusual subject really well done. Great NM finish

Had to read up a bit on the Shrike and then the Airacuda - quite a pair. ANd your issues with the landing gear sounds just like the real thing.

There are a few details I am skipping on the A-18, like the little hinges on the rudder.  The decals were very fragile and the less handling the better.  Looks cool the way it is, in my bookParadise

I used Alclad 101 aluminum rubbed with SNJ aluminum powder for the metal areas, and Alclad white aluminum for the fabric.  The landing gear legs may have more metal in them than resin, they are very fragile, and were also too short.  All's well that ends well.  I wish I has a P-36 in 1/72 to pose with it, the P-39 is the closest I could come age-wise, and of course the Bell YFM-1B Airacuda, like the A-18, another design based on mistaken conceptions and whose time was past before it ever arrived.

Frank, you are a machine!

Liking the look of the Tigercat, how are you going with the Montex masks?

StugIII, only 6? I'm sure you could fit more on there...

The vengeance has wings on and all panel lines scribed - well all the ones I am going to do.

I'd like to enter with a Tamiya 1/72 Aichi M6A1 Seiran. Not on the list, but meets the criteria for the groupbuild

Does not sound like a 'close air support' type of a/c to me , however, I think it meets the  very loose criteria defined for this GB Wink

lewbud
Dedicated attack aircraft definitely allowed

Based on that, I would say you are good to go...

I wanted to avoid redundancy, hence the unusual subject. I have a few others in the stash that definately fit the bill, so if the Sieran does not qualify, no problem!

Still have not decided what to build for this. Has to be simple, low parts count.. Was thinking something in 1/72.. Perhaps an Airfix F-111 if I can find one on the cheap  or an  A-7A/D/E from Airfix, revell or Italeri (not Fujimi, want to try something new)... Then again I would  not mind doing a Huey gunship... or a Heller T-28... or a skyraider... a decisions...

Thank you!  I finally found more last night, too.  There seemed to be multiple places they attached bombs on to the wings.  This was one, another was aft and outside these pylons when using the fuel pods and another has the two each outboard the engines on the wings.

I could attach 6 500 lbs bombs, since the P-38H supposedly had the capacity, but I've seen some heated internet "debates" over it's REAL capacity to know that that could start a S-Storm with some folks.  Maybe I'll do it anyway.  Eduard has a really nice set of 6 bombs so why not use them all?

I don't know if this is an H or not but it is a good view of a P-38 with bombs on the pylons.

I have an old Airfix P38H in 1/72

Built the MPC boxing as a kid. Memories! Good luck with your sculpting!

Hi, I'd like to join this GB. I have an old Airfix P38H in 1/72. Picked it up at a garage sale a few years back for $2. Problem is it's missing a propeller and....the snoot. I'll be doing a "flying model" so I'll probably use acetate circles for the props there. The snoot, well, I have some milliput on the way and guess i'll try my hand at sculpting. If anyone has a spare from this kit, be glad to take it.

Anyone know of a source for pics of the P38H with bombs attached? An hour on the internet has produced exactly one, only in shadow, shot of this plane with a bomb attached.

After the F9F Panther and the F7F Tigercat that is in the finishing stages, I had been looking for a follow-up build. Since the Panther and the Tigercat are both Korean War, I wanted to stay with that theme. I found this kit the other day:

Maybe not the best kit. Raised panel lines and I'll have to source period ordinance but I think the kit will build up really nice. So this Skyraider will be my third contribution to this Close Air Support Group Build.

Would Douglas SBD-2 Dountless qualify for this GB? It is from Academy, Midway version.

Headed out to the paint bench in the morning. The paint masks are a mix of Montex and homemade. A friend has one of those stencil machines and he made the WM's that weren't on the Montex stencil sheet. This is a first for me. Everything will be painted on -- no decals. Well, maybe one or two small decals, but that's it.
