Supermarine/Vickers GB
Posted by Bish on Friday, November 20, 2020 2:04 PM

Welcome to the second of 2 Company based GB's for 2021. The starting point for this GB was Supermarine, based on my well known views of an aircraft (that i will not name) built by that company. Then the idea expanded to include Vickers-Armstrong that took control of Supermarine in the 1920's, though the name was still in use into the 1960's.

So, whats allowed for this GB, well this is a little more complicated than the Me/MBB GB, so i'll break it down.

Supermarine bagan life in 1913 as Pemberton-Billing Ltd. So anything built by the company through it being bought by VA until that company was merged in 1960 is allowed. This includes projects and prototypes that did not make it into production. See this Wiki link for some ideas.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarine

Vickers Armstrong was formed in 1927 with the merger of 2 long standing engineering companies, both founded in the 1800's. Between them they had built ships, planes, airships, trains and much more. So, anything built by the 2 companies from their founding, through the 1927 merger, the buy out of Supermarine upto the company merger in 1960 to form BAC is included. As is anything bult under the Vickers name after 1960 until it finally became defunct in 1977.

These links will help.

Vickers-Armstrong

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers-Armstrongs

Vickers

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers_Limited

Armstrong Whitworth

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_Whitworth

In 1897, Vickers bought the Barrow Shipbuilding Company. This part of the company changed its name several times over the following decades, finally becoming VSEL in 1986. This finally became defunct in 2007 after being taken over by BAE systems a few years before. So, any ship built at the Barrow-in-Furness shipyards from 1871 to 2007 can be included. This includes any ship laid in in or prior to 2007 even if it was not completed until after that year.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_and_submarines_built_in_Barrow-in-Furness

Any questions or unsure if a build can be included, please ask.

General rules.

1) Starts Jan 1st 2021 and ends Dec 31st of the same year.

2) As long as the build is on the roster by Dec 31st, you can carry on building and posting as long as it takes.

3) Post plenty of pics.

4) Going off topic is expected, as long as your chatting and haveing fun, thats all that matters.

5) Partly started builds and cross overs are allowed.

And yes, that certain aircraft can be named here, be a bit tricky not to.

Please feel free to pick one badge of your chooseing and host it.

Please make the most of this first one, i will not be doing this again. (you have no idea how painful this was). Crying

So, sign up and just wait for the new year.

I'm in with a Matchbox Wellesley.

Here's one for which I don't think there is a kit.  I did 1/5 scale plans for it many years ago for R/C.  Vickers Type 151, Jockey Fighter.

Heck, I could possably even build the IJN Kongo or Mikasa since they were built at Vickers, or the HMS Sheffeld, which of course seems to be on prepetual backorder.

I'll just stick to the Walrus for now. Maybe put it in some water Wink

I'd work from my plans to do one in 1/48, Martin.  I only meant there wasn't a plastic model.  Food for thought.  It's a simple shape except for the baffle and engine detail.  Vector actually makes the Mercury in 1/48 scale, which I just ordered, so maybe it will happen.  I have the molds to make the cooling plate in 1/5 scale so I have that shape figured out.

I'm in with this airplane that will remain unnamed. When it's done it will be 31st FG USAAF. Reverse Lend-Lease I think.

I have the HMS Nelson, somewhere in my stash.  It was laid down at a Armstrong Whitworth shipyard, so I am in if it qualifies.  I think it is the Airfix 1/600 iteration.

Bish, please put me on the roster for this combo: Eduard #11146, 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk.II A/B. Polish and Canadian airmen join the RAF.

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/eduard-11146-spitfire-story-tally-ho--1311919

I may substitute this for a VB later in the year if Eduard offers one in 2021.

Thank you,

Harold

Yes sir that is the way that set is intended to be built. I have not built a model aircraft in 66-years, so it may take me two to get one, if you know what I mean.

OK Bish,
I orderd the 1/700 Kajika Battlecruiser Kongo as she was in the 1914. Vickers sold her to the Imperial Japanese Navy and she was commisioned in 1913. She was the last ship that was build outside of Japan. During WW1 she patroled off the Chinese coast.
After WW1 she was upgraded, uparmored and reclassified as a fast battleship capable of 30 kts. As such she fought in several engagements in WW2. She was torpedoed and sunk by the submarine Sealion while transiting the Formosa Streight on Nov 21 1944, giving her the distinction of being the only Japanese battleship sunk by a submarine in WW2.

From what I understand, the manufacturer Kajika is an offshoot of Flyhawk and concentrates on making kits of ships in the IJN.

I'll probably start on it after the Walrus.

I love those ship models- I'd never have thought of entering them.

Bish, I'm going to try to build the Classic Airframes 1/48th Supermarine Attacker. I've gotten to a sorta love/hate relationship with limited run kits. Hopefully this one will be finished and not end up a British kamikaze smashed all over the wall...
