Feeler: Welcome To The 80s GB
Posted by 68GT on Saturday, March 13, 2021 6:45 AM

Hi Guys,  This is my group build feeler for Welcome To The 80s GB.  Thinking of a June 1st start date.  Anything goes as long as it's period correct to the 1980s.  I'll shoot for a year but if interest wanes I'll pull the plug early..

If your building some sort of aircraft then it will have marking, camo scheme and load out it would have had in the 1980s.  If its some type of ship then it would be with the equipment that it was fitted with during the 80s.  Autos, trucks and cycles would be 1980s vehicles or older vehicles with mods that would have been done during the 80s.  Armor and other military equipment would be 1980s or older but would have to have markings, camo and equipment it would have had during the 80s.  Going to include 1980s space craft and entertainment also.  If it had something to do with space exploration during the 80s then its in. If it was in a 1980s movie or TV show then its in.

Its a bit broad but I wanted to get some other builds hopefully besides just aircraft.

I have a barely-started 1/72 scale F/A-16B that I was going to be building at some point, with a nice GPU-5 hung on the centerline station.  What would the rules be for how far along a build can be?  Pretty sure I haven't finished step 1 yet.

I'd be in with Revell's Miami Vice or Magnum PI Ferrari kit.

Thinking about doing a Massey Ferguson 2680. Got a few projects on the bench so won't really know if I am going to jump in this one until closer to the start date.

Looks like just the cockpit bucket and side consoles are done...pilot, seats, and sticks primered.  Yup...in the VERY early stages of its build before I paused.  Forgot that June is less than 3 months away though, so I think I'll have to pass on this one.  Gotta focus on getting my Frog done for the CAS GB.

Cockpit would be fine but if you can't wait the 2 1/2 months maybe you'll find something else.

Its not that I can't wait, I'm just struggling a little bit with the subject of a group build I'm already involved in...progress is slower than I was hoping it would be.  Had it in my head that June was a lot further off than it actually is.  Oops

Hey, I'll be here and it sounds from the interest so far so will the build. If you get the time with another subject your more than welcome to jump on in is all I'm saying. Me, I have a 3 builds I'm working on that stalled and just cant get myself to put them on the shelf of doom.

I have an '87 Corvette roadster that would fit the bill. If you decide to forward with the GB.

Mark aka Tomcat

On the workbench: Monogram 1/24 '69 Pontiac GTO and a Monogram 1/67 (box scale) B-26 Invader

That van and the vette are perfect! As time goes on I think we will get even more participants. I think there is good interest so far and the June to June dates should give some time for benches to be cleared. I might even pull out some funny cars I've been itching to build.

Ooh the 1980s - Members Only jackets, designer jeans, big hair/raccoon eye makeup, jumpsuits, leg warmers and Nagel posters.  What an era!  No seriously, I grew up there.  But it wasn't all glam fashion and party rock music.  It was also the height of the Cold War, and I went through high school thinking we all going to get nuked.  But we survived and I gotta say I had a pretty good time.  That decade IMHO also had the best movies too (Star Trek II, Robocop, Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator, The Road Warrior, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters.  Space Balls Indifferent).

I'll set the time machine for the 1980s and see what I can find in the Stash from the Past.

I have lately been rewatching 48 Hours and Another 48 Hours again and again, I would love doing Nick Nolte's junker Sky Blue Cadillac DeVille.

Yeah the '80 had the best movies and TV shows. Although I might be a little biased since that's when I grew up.

I picked up a bunch of those Real G listed recently plus the 'Back to the Future' series.

Yah know if I manage to finish B.A.'s van I might look around for a time-traveling De Lorian kit...

Amen to that.  Those classic movies are pretty much all you see on cable TV these days, and the theatres (when they're open) are all showing remakes of those movies which aren't nearly as good...despite all of the CGI that's in them now.  The music was also better, with a much bigger variety.

You forgot movies like Iron Eagle, Better Off Dead and the ultimate car modeler movie, The Wraith!

I thought it was amusing reading that the Japanese referred to that spate of Glenn Larson type TV shows from the 80s as "Baka Terebi" (Idiot Television)!  I watched "The A Team" in Japan, and Mr T's dub was hillarious!  Baka Terebi or not, I DID watch those shows.  Embarrassed

Better Off Dead~ "Go that way, REALLY FAST.  If something gets in your way...turn."

Heh...speaking of Space Balls, that could be a good meme idea for the 80s group build.  Maybe a pic of Colonel Sanders and Dark Helmet, with "So when will then be now? June!" Propeller
