Hey dudes and dudettes, there's some, like, totally tubular work goin' on in here. Wicked stuff!

OK, enough of that...let me show you what I've been up to with my Harriers.

I have been able to get my Monogram Harrier's office finished. My only addition was some scratched ejection handles made from thin wire.

(Sorry for the terrible photo. Next time I'll pay more attention to my f-stop.)

That's as all I've been able to finish on my Monogram Harrier. Honestly, my Tamiya Harrier isn't much further along.

The Tamiya Harrier is a very simple (i.e. basic and bare) kit, so I decided to build it in-flight. If I was going to do that, I needed to decide on how I wanted to pose it. I decided on a nose-down/diving pose.

I started with inserting a plastic rod through the engine assembly that will be buried in the fuselage.

From there, I moved forward to the cockpit. Since this was going to be an in-flight display, my Harrier needed a pilot. I found this ol' Sundowner in my figures box.

I had to change him from a squid to a jarhead. So, I handpainted (poorly, I might add) some woodland camo onto his helmet cover.

Some Tamiya tape belts and scratched wire ejection handles, and this Marine was ready to go flying!

Here he is earning his paycheck.

No, it's not perfect, but I think he'll make the cockpit look busy enough.

That's where my Harriers are as of today. I'll post more progress as I make it. In the mean time, keep up the righteous work everyone!

Of course, comments, questions, and criticisms are welcome.

Cheers,

-O

I feel like it has been weeks since my last update...it has been a long week.

Over the weekend I started installing the hoods, windows and mirrors.  Then painted the trim, roof, and markings.

Next up is decals, somehow fixing the hoods so they actually sit flush,(they did during dry fitting!) then install the chassis without breaking any pieces or scratching the paint!

The promised spring time temps arrived, and allowed a coat of Italian Red to be applied.  The rear axle has been replaced with brass rod from the LHS, so all tires are in their place.

We're getting there!

I'll second that.  I was dead center in the grand stands at the Miramar Airshow years ago and the harrier pulled up right in front and hovered, slipped and spun around.  The loudest thing ever.  An F-18 Blue Angle buzzed the stands and it wasn't as loud as that harrier.

Thanks,

John

Looks cool O!

Saw (or heard!) a Harrier at an airshow years ago, loudest plane ever!!!

I know its early, but anyone who started should keep posting till your build is done.

Hey gang, I know I'm really late to the party, but I'm hoping I can still get in on the fun. I'm waiting on a couple of parts to finish up my submissions for the Animalistic, Lockheed and Mighty 8th GBs, but I'd like to try to get two done for this GB. I have a couple of new projects in the works for the Animalistic and Lockheed GBs (crossovers), but those GBs run until the end of the year. Since I can take my time with those, I figured I'd try to get a pair of "quick" builds done before this GB's deadline.

I plan on doing a couple of 1/48 AV-8As in early USMC markings.

One will be Monogram's Harrier. I bought it as a bagged kit for just a few bucks...

And the other will be Tamiya's offering. Also got it for a song...

The Tamiya kit is super-basic, so my plan is to build it in flight. The Monogram will be build gear-down.

Report cards are done...conferences are done...Spring Break's around the corner...I think I can knock these out.

OK, wish me luck!

Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I opted for TS-8 Italian Red, I think that is their flavor that goes with all their Ferrari kits.  Arrived yesterday, so hopefully we will find out later this week.

Had some more progress, front wheels, spare, and radiator is installed.

Then I ran into used kit issue #2 and #3.  The rear axle is MIA, as is the part for some kind of fluid reservoir in the engine compartment.  Sigh...  I will grab some brass rod from the LHS for the axle, so not a biggie.  The reservoir, I will just skip since I don't plan on displaying with the hood up anyway.

...Now I need to start thinking about that nice Ferrari red...I think I will just take the easy path and get a can of Tamiya TS85.

I hear great things about MCW.  Ferrari red: https://mcwfinishes.com/shop/ols/products/2078e-ferrari-red

I guess some purists will complain but red is red to me. Not like I can tell the difference!

LOL! I can't afford Ferrari red anyhow! GM, Dodge, or Ford red will have to do!

Thanks, John.  The spares box had a reasonable approximation of the foot pedals.  Formerly AA gun barrels from a 1/700 ship turret.  Unfortunately, or fortunately in some respects, they will be basically invisible after the dash is installed, even after I glued some extensions on as well.  Oh well!

Not sure if it can be seen due to the lighting washing everything out, but I used to shades of tan on the carpeted floor and the leather seats and console.  From the looks of the original, the carpet was a tad darker than the leather areas.

Patel: I have a dump box for the back that I scratch built.

Glamdring: Nice choice with the Magnum PI Ferarri. Hopefully the missing parts don't give you too much trouble.

A brief update to start the weekend, the engine is complete and awaiting installation.  This weekend will see work on the car interior, which is where I have run into my first bump in the road.  As this was a used kit, the foot pedals are MIA.  I will try raiding the spares box to see if anything reasonably close is available,  otherwise I will just have to scratch something.

Robert: That's soooo cool! I picked Magnum up on DVD a bit ago and have been going though the series- about two-thirds of the way though currently.

It's funny that they removed the padding from the seats so the 6'4" Selleck would sit a little lower in the car. Still they never put the top up since his head was still higher than the windshield!

While other projects are on a temporary suspension while waiting for outdoor painting weather, figured it is time to bust out one of my grail kits, the Magnum PI Ferrari.  I loved that show as a kid, along with the A Team and Knight Rider.  Some day BA's van will come out of the stash, and I will get my hands on a model of KITT.

Anyway, here is the box, dust and all:

I ordered this off of Ebay, and it has had some parts removed from the trees so hopefully nothing is missing.  Kind of hard getting raplacements now:

It is definitely a kit from a different age, some flash is present on parts but not too bad.  I am glad that manuracturers stopped using black styrene, I am having a wicked time reading the part numbers on thise two trees.
