Ships of the Japanese Flag GB 2021

軍艦の船長は戦いの準備をする
Gunkan no snecho wa tatakai no junbi wo suru
Alright Snecho, prepair for battle. The forth ship installment, and probably my most anticipated, of getting those who want to expand their horizons, or just like building ships. The ships of different nations GB’s continue with Japanese ships!
Any ship which flies or flew the Rising Sun is acceptable. Warships, training ships, cargo ships, passenger ships, captured ships, racing yachts, submarines, private boats etc. any era.
You have up to 2 years to submit an entry and no build time limit. That’s right, as long as I'm around, I will answer your posted WIP updates. Lord knows that after my Akagi, it can take a loong time.
So, who wants to join me in building something JAPANESE?.....BANZAI!!!

1. Starts on Aug 1st with no time limit.

2. You have two years to enter.

3. WIP photos a must.

4. 10% completed or less please.

5. Crossovers allowed.

6. As much or little AM as you want.

7. Scratch or OOB.

8. Enjoy yourself, it’s a hobby.

9. I reserve the right to change the rules slightly to make the GB more enjoyable if necessary.

What the hey, put me down too Steve.

1/350th Hasegawa IJN Shimakaze

I need this like another hole in the head. The LST I started for your American Navy GB is still sitting there beside the bench. And the cyborg for your cyberpunk/steampunk GB is sitting near my airbrush, still can't get the skin tones to blend like I really want them too.

I admire you and Bruce, if I get one done I'll be more than happy.

TankerBuilder san, I assume that is the Hasegawa 1/700 HikaMaru.

What is the manufacturer and scale of the Icebreaker/Research ship? Or will it be scratch built?

You saying something about my advanced age there, youngster? Lol.

Dunno the exact year but I was in my teens when I first saw Asagumo at San Antonio Hobby Shop in California and thought it was the sexiest ship I'd ever seen.

OK, the first of many kits for me in this GB is the IJN Chokai Heavy Cruiser:

And the extras:

I won't be starting just yet, need to finish another project from my other hobby first.

Well guys, here's mine. My wife bought it for my birthday back in 2016. It's high time I started on it.

She also bought me the massive White Ensign Models PE set.

I'm hoping to complete it for next years Nats in Omaha, but that's still a year away and I'm not going to knock myself out like I did on the Akagi to finish it. Luckly I won't have 36 planes with their interiors to do and I about half the size.

That's awesome Steve! And take your time, I'd think with the Akagi you'd not even want to look at a ship for decade or so!

You kidding? I could never get tired of ships. Maybe take a small break between them on occasion.

I actualy can't find the instructions and the only one I can find is on the internet, small, hard to read and all in Japanese. I printed out but still looking for it.

I got all the vents, capstans, cable reels and bollards attached. There were a lot. I used the kits cable reels because they were well done. The reel bases are a little thick but the reel details are better than I could achieve with PE reels.

My plan is displaying it as she probably looked during the second naval battle of Guadalcanal on Nov 14th 1942. The Takao, her sister Atago and the battlecruser Kirishima, light crusier Nagara and six DD's battled the Washington and South Carolina and four DD's. The Takao was the only heavy to escape damage. Her guns will be facing port and port torpedo tubes run out.

Next is assembling the torpedo tubes and the 01 deck amidships.

Bruce, I believe this kit is the the same kit as your Chokai since they were sisters. The instructions are diffrent, a little diffrent placement of the vents and diffrent superstructure.

Steve,

I believe you are correct, and I believe the only sister ship of the Takao class, with a significant difference was the Maya.

I can scan my directions and send you a PDF, may help you a bit.

Hey Steve or anyone, can anyone tell me the correct shade of grey I need for IJN Shimakaze? Looked her up and she was built at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal so I guess Maizuru grey is right? Guess it's a no-brainer but just wanted to make sure before ordering paint.

Yes sir, that would be correct.

You can also look at Lifecolor. I used their Kure Grey for the Akagi. I really liked them. The only issue I found with them was I couldn't find individual bottles.

Thanks bunches Steve!!!

Never used Lifecolor or Vic so it's all new to me. Plus never painted anything like a destroyer so the whole thing is brand spanking new too- I feel like I'm feeling my way around in the dark.

Gam, the other nice thing about the lifecolor kit, and I'm sure others as well, is the Linoleum color comes with it.

Painting ships isn't too difficult. Make each sub assembly, black base everything then go over with the base coat grey. The black base establishes the shadows and any areas you want darker than the base color. Lighten the base color some and do it again, rinse and repeat with the last application being small streaks. Do the same with the deck, anti fouling paint and so on. Paint on a scum line along the watterline, touch up the deck fittings and voila, a ship Wink The IJN didn't use a boot top so don't worry about that

OK maybe not that easy. I do use the steps I layed out Whistling
