Floats and Boats GB 2022, extended to end of 2023

Got the resin pits in place and ready to paint last night. The gunner’s seat had a ton of flash specially on the thin delicate framing that was carefully cleaned up but still needs a tad more trimming before painting.

Dont know if Lone Star still makes resin AM parts for the old Monogram Kingfisher. I bought some resin updates from that company back in 2012 for my mine and it is a HUGE improvement over the kit parts.

Kingfishers were a nice plane. A little underpowered though and could swamp easily if it carried much more weight than the two man crew. But used for search, it was great.

If the Brits were doing that in the 40s, then they must have taken over from the French in the 30s, some of those early monoplane bombers.

Anyway, made a start on my AZModel Kingfisher, as used by the RAAF. I think they were known as Vought-Sikorskys locally. At the moment I'm thinking aout the bare metal scheme shown on the box art, but there are many interesting and varied camo schemes for these things. I could well be tempted.

Here's my start, taking parts of the sprue only so far.

I have a Czech Models Seamew in the stash. Got to be one of the ugliest planes out there, that and the Baracuda.

 

I also have a couple others, a Ryan something or other and another weird plane from the same company with resin parts.

It does look like the result of a night of drunken carousing between a Kingfisher and a Helldiver.

The British, especially the Royal Navy, seemed to have been running a "Most Ugly Aeroplane Contest" between the 1940-1950 period - we must never forget to include the Gannet, Seamew, and Sturgeon.  The Baracuda though, wins hands-down when everything is folded up.  Or down.  Or sideways.  It was almost like the designers at Fairey could not make up their minds about how and where to fold the airplane for carrier stowage.  Compare to the elegant wing folding system of the Wildcat/Hellcat/Avenger.

I'd better get on with the Lun - John is blitzing me with his Seamaster!

BK, I have that beast in the stash and haven't opened the box so it's still sealed. I read lots of not so positive reviews regarding fit issues so it will be interesting to get your take on building it. 
I finally got around to open the box and check things out on this Seamew kit. Looks to be a low parts count kit with some very nice resin detailed parts. I never wash kit parts except for resin ones but the instructions say in BOLD letters to wash ALL the parts so I did and are air drying now.

Next will be the tedious task of cutting the resin parts from the mold blocks and using CA to assemble them.

 

The resin on your kit looks amazing. She should build up into a very nice kit.

Ooooooh!  Nice BK!  One of my favorite planes.  I've been wishing for a new 1/48 kit, but that looks so nice.  I'll be following along this build for sure.  I've never done a 1/32 kit but that one would be the first!

Another update on my progress with the seamaster

Fitting and glueing the wings wasn't without some issue's . I had to cut of the tabs that fit into the slots on the fuselage , my wings kept wanting to sit horizontal and I wanted a slight downward droop . 

Once the glued dried I puttied the wing/fuselage join , there wasn't much of a gap thank goodness .

Anyway that's all I got done today , some more sanding tomorrow evening after work .

The fit of the canopy wasn't too bad , although it did sit a little high along the top of the fuselage and also across the bottom edge along the front 

I decided to blend it in a bit better with some putty and sand it to contour in 

The tail fin and tail planes fitted okay  . 

I've airbrushed the beaching gear parts yellow and those cushion pads dark gray . I can start assembling some of it tomorrow . The wings are also ready to glue on first thing in the morning , so I'm almost there getting this beast together .

I turned the wing floats around and they fit quite well .

Too many fumes from the tamiya putty gave me a brain freeze

Dry fitting the vertical stabilizer and tail planes seems to show that the right tail plane sits slightly higher against the bullet fairing , not by much but it is noticable looking straight on

No problem, and no shame!  If they had gotten glued in place, THEN shame!  

That's what happens when a kit manufacturer prints the entire instruction sheet on a napkin-sized paper.

Some more sanding this morning on all those seams on the small parts 

I wasn't happy with the fuselage join across the top , so some more putty has been applied .

Dry fitting the vertical stabilizer and tail planes seems to show that the right tail plane sits slightly higher against the bullet fairing , not by much but it is noticable looking straight on 

The wing tip floats do sit way too far forward , so I'll need to re file the slots on both floats to get them to line up with the wing tips

This model has a known issue with tail bloat, so to correct this appearance problem I will use a Belcher Bits conversion kit to replace the tail portion of the model and back date it to a PBY-2/3/4 variant. http://www.belcherbits.com/lines/148conv/bb6.htm

My father and aunt both worked on PBY aircraft in the Navy. My father was at Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle and transferred to North Island NAS in San Diego prior to the United States entry in the Second World War on December 8, 1941. Both air stations had PBY Patrol Squadrons.

My aunt was a First-class Aviation Machinist Mate at Norfolk Naval Air Station where PBY and Corsair were repaired and re-fitted during the war. I served on Destroyers home ported at the same Naval Base 18-years later during the Vietnam War.
