Seat completed using studio 27 fabric belts.  Scratch built the drivers communication wire.

Engine looking good, John.

Definitely worth clicking to see the bigger pics, lots of detail and nice paint work to look at.

The old saying there's no replacemnt for displacement... apparently RPMS are pretty good.  Current cars are electronically limited to 15000 RPM Surprise

My 2013 Boss 302 has a 7500 redline and I thought that was high :)

I think the 2000 Honda S2000 redline was 8900 (some say 9000)

Thanks,

John

Honda had a different idea about where to race on the power curve.

I have a model I havent started of a 6 cylinder inline 250 cc bike that ran at top speed at 20,000 rpm.

Thanks, John.  Still rolling along here.  This car is definitely closely akin to a 4 wheel motorcycle.  I've been watching a few videos and the V-12 turning 9,000 rpm definitely howls.  I've also seen that there is a whole forest of what I think is fuel injection tubing on the top of the engine.  Don't know if I will go there, I might make a mess of it.  There must also be 12 ignition wires there somewhere.

I installed all the exhaust and some of the framing today, 12 pipes into 4 pretty much wrapping all around everything.

Zipping along here, and as you guys said, this is a fun kit to build.  Painting and assembly of the engine continues, and I also painted the wheels.  Mostly Tamiya paints, as usual there is a bit more grain to the Tamiya Flat Aluminum than I like but it just seems right to use Tamiya paints on this one.  X-18 Semi Gloss Black and Alclad Polished Aluminum went on the wheels.  I was unsure of how I was going to get a clean job on the silver rim detail, but I found a metal washer that was the exact fit in my clutter and with the addition of a little Tamiya tape I think the result is nice.  The velocity stacks are also Alclad Polished Aluminum, I made a mask with the Silhouette Cameo to do that.  The body of the part is a mix of 1 part of Tamiya Chrome Silver and 5 parts of Tamiya Gold Leaf that also was used on what I think is an intake and water manifold and also some covers on the engine and transmission.

I got the replacement parts from Tamiya already, so tonight I did a small bit of work on the engine and transmission, a transverse mounted V-12 with many tiny pistons.

I had a slight hiccup on the Honda.  When I took the parts out of the bag I found the black sprue was deformed and the radius rods for the suspension were bent and in one case broken.  Thankfully, Gary at Tamiya USA had an incomplete spare B sprue even though the kit is not in current production and he is sending me the needed parts which were still on that sprue.  Lucky day and thank you, Tamiya for the great service.

That bent sprue is certainly unusual, especially coming from Tamiya.

Happy to hear of the great customer support, though. Yes

28 years ago today Senna died at tamburello corner Imola, Italy.  Working on the Lotus.  Not much to see but here is the tub and some of the engine assembly.  I'll get the seat installed with aftermarket belts in the next update.
Really looking forward to seeing all the great f1 models.

A great driver.  Looking forward to this build - I'm hoping to get this kit as well.  That Camel yellow is awesome.

Thanks,

John

Tamiya have always had great service in my experience.  Apparently you got the off-road version with the high suspension travel ;)

Thanks,

I can definately second or third that positive remarks regarding the 1/20 Honda. And it looks like Bill has a good handle on the Ferrari as well.

For something totally different I'm going to show one of my latest additions. Another 1/18 scale die cast that I saved from a parts bin. The seller was going to destroy the rest of it and us it for parts. I convinced him to sell it to me to restore. The car started as a Replicarz 1971 Lotus 56B.

The Lotus 56B is an evolution of the Lotus 56 Indy 500 racing car designed by Maurice Philippe and campaigned by Team Lotus under the hands of Graham Hill, Joe Leonard, and Art Pollard in 1968. The 56 proved to be unsuccessful and unreliable leading to the governing body of American motorsport, and USAC to deem turbine cars and four wheel drive illegal. Undeterred by USAC's decision to ban the 56's technology, Chapman developed the car as a potential F1 machine after the failure of the Lotus 63, but while the car was promising, it was too heavy and too overcomplicated for F1. The car was designated as the 56B and Emerson Fittipaldi tried it in the 1971 Race of Champions and International Trophy non-Championship meetings. At Brands Hatch, during wet practice, the 56 was far and away the fastest car on the track, but the race was held in dry weather and the car was lost in midfield. At the Silverstone-based International Trophy, the car only lasted three laps of the first heat before suspension failure forced Fittipaldi's retirement. Dave Walker ran the car in the Dutch Grand Prix, and had progressed from 22nd to 10th in five laps of the very wet track, before sliding off the road and into retirement. Fittipaldi used the car again in that year's 1971 Italian Grand Prix and managed to bring the fragile design home 8th. By then Chapman decided to cut his losses and abandoned the 56, the four wheel drive concept and the gas turbine engine to concentrate on the Lotus 72.

The car when I received it had the rear spoiler removed from the body, both mirrors missing, and underneath of the front nose was not attached to the top of the nose, the engine cover and upper body did not fit to the main chassis, the paint was rough showing a lot of thick film (gunk), the left shoulder harness was off the car, several side pod and upper decals were torn or nicked, and it had numerous detail issues.

- polished the body with Nufinish polish and scratch remover

- created both mirrors from plastic stock, punch sets, and spares

- cleaned joints and reaffixed the lower nose tray to the front of the body

- corrected the alignment and flash on the engine cover to sit correctly

- painted the tears and missing sections of the white decals- painted (corrected) white and red trim areas on body

- repainted many small detail items

- corrected the gauges wires to allow room for legs and feet

- attached and laid down the whole drivers harness to the seat

Once again, I did not build it from a kit, but instead restored it back close to the way it should look when new.

Yes, they listed that color as backordered. I bought a bottle of Vallejo Air "italian red". It will have to do.

Thanks, Bill.

I guess one of these days I'm going to order some backordered Zero from Hobbyworld and see what happens.

John (jeaton), I've had that Honda on my radar for years. Like keavdog John, it's one of my faves. I look forward to your build.

Heck ya!  My favorite - Honda RA272.  You can do Ginther or Bucknum.  It's a really nice kit and your going to love it John.

John

F1 power plants are hybrid gas/electric while Indy are gas only.

John, that underside looks right to me.

There was a time when Indy cars had larger engines that F1. I don't know if that's the case any more.

Knowing nothing about the genre, I will ask some stupid questions, would the Tamiya Lotus Super 7 Series II qualify?  Airfix Lotus Turbine Car?  Matchbox Jaguar SS 100?

Me too. I would have assumed yes, and was surprised by John's answer. But I now remember reading somewhere that Indy cars are in a class by themselves. I had always assumed they are/were formula cars as well.

I'll have to check with John about the one in my stash I am planning on building too!

Meanwhile, it's good to see some build activity going on here. Yes

GMorrison

It's been a while since I built a car. I think I want a jar of Zero Paint 323 scuderia red.

Where to buy here in the US, or where else?

Bill

Bill, if you (or anyone else) has any recent success ordering Zero paints from Hobbyworld US or any of the other sites John mentioned, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I've been ready to order a few times in the past couple of years, colors I want always showing 'backordered' in Hobbyworld. i'd assumed it was a another so-called COVID delay, but I just checked again on a couple and it's the same.

Since these are sort of a specialty paint, I wonder if Hobbyworld places orders with Zero upon recieving orders themselves????

Hmmm... it is difficult to find pics of the bellys of these things.  I found this one of a kit

Here: https://www.super-hobby.com/products/Ferrari-312T3-Clear-Cowl.html

My kit motor was to plasticy looking so I shot it with Tamiya semigloss black and did a bit of detailing - more to come

Thanks,

John
