For one Avon Sabre walkaround, have a look at

http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/AWA1/401-500/walk483_RAAF-Sabre_Williamson/walk483.htm

This is the a/c at Classic Jets Fighter Museum in SA.

I have more pics of others, feel free to email me at dedwar14@ford.com and I'll reply with them.

Nice pics.
I took a whole heap of pics of the Sabre in the Darwin Aviation museum when I was there in July.
Being a restored bird, there are alot of things that aren't what there're spose to be.

Apart from an incomplete cockpit, what's wrong with the Darwin Sabre?

Hoping you can share your references for wheel wells painted in primer. I have an ambition to build Sabres from each operational Sqn eventually and would like to capture some differences between them. -901 is the last aircraft I ever worked on, so I have a bit of a weakness for them.

The Darwin Sabre c/pit was a bit of a let down, but they can only do what they can.
It also had incomplete hydraulics and no engine amongst other things. But to their credit, they did it on no money (as often happens here in the NT, unless it involves sport and booze), and mostly with volunteer support.

As for wheel wells, I haven't seen any finished in primer, but heres a pic of a restored bird, with the Zinc finish on the wheel well, and you can see the overspray of silver.

Some of the pics I have from the Darfwin Sabre show areas where the silver hasn't quite covered the Zinc.

If you give me a mailing address, I can make a copy of my pics, and send it to you.

I've just been doing a bit more of the Spit and I thought I would give you an update.

First of all I had the bright idea to pre-shade a panel line in the spinner, no probs I'll do it in black as that is what I had loaded in the abs at the time. Tonight I tried to spray the spinner insignia red with the result of red on the top of the spinner, a huge black doughnut ring round the middle and red on the bottom.Sad [:(] It looks like am going to have to wait till it dries completely then give it a few more dozen coats.

I have now finished off the underside, having re-sprayed after I patched up all things that the first coat of Medium Sea Grey revealed. Hopefully tomorrow night I will get a chance to start making the camo for the upper surfaces.

Now I'm on a bit of a roll I want to try and keep things going (Ha like I haven't heard that before).

Cheers

Update on my Sabre build.

The halves are together, and it took ALOT of filler to fill/hide the seam.
Normally I would have flat sanded each half, but being that they are so uneven, to much sanding would have resulted in the fuselage being to narrow for the wings, canopy, and air intake.

Fitted the nose last night, and filled like a madman again to get it all sleek.

As for the wing roots, had to go a bit sick with the dremel to get the OEM wing assy to bed down onto the underside of the resin body, then had to use .5 mm styrene strip to take up the gap in the wing root.
As it is, I will have to glue the bottom of the wings seperately from the top, and fill in the gap along the leading edge, any other way will result in the wings sitting too low in comparison to the fuselage root. Filler won't hide this.

Then there is the filling required for the deeper Sabre underbelly, and then I have to find some research pics of Sabre's with there canopy open, so I can find out where the actuator etc is spose to be.

Why didn't I go with something simplerQuestion [?]

Darson i'm up to making the camo masks aswell for the 2nd time,i havn't had much luck with this one first the masks pulled off the underlying green paint so i had to cover it all in brown and next the gloss coat i put over that came out with a rough surface so i had to give it a little wet sanding,it still looks a little rank so hopefully when the last coat of flat clear goes over the top it will blend in...........

Tweety1 cause you love a challenge mateBig Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

Hey 3eggs this may interest you it's the recovery version,i have a pic stored in the bowels of this machine somewhere of a couple of leopards going up a bank but i can't find it Sigh [sigh]

J.S what are you using for your cammo masks? I sat down on Saturday night and started masking using some frisket material (it's sort of a semi-transparent low tack stuff), what a dumb idea that was. The frisket will only stay down on absolutely dead flat surfaces, the slightest bump and it refuses to stick down Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]

After about two hours of cutting, sticking and cursing I ripped the whole lot off and chucked it in the bin. Banged Head [banghead] I think I'll go back to rolls of Blu Tack applied in the pattern I am after.

I am going to have to change the livery of my 737-300. It was going to be Virgin Blue reverse livery but the decals were in a word...crap!

I purchased some ANSETT decals from Hawkeye to finish the build. Thank God that the planes had the same paint scheme!

cheers

madmike arn't most of Virgin Blues Airliners ex Ansett aircraft..........

3ggs i dunno mate i'd like to but we're up to our necks building a house,so i dunno have to see what happens i guess......................

Darson sounds like your having as much fun with your Spit as i'm having with mine, seems to be some sort of bad carma with this kit......
despite warnings from other members i'm using Tamiya 40mm tape,i'm putting a strip on the backing paper of contact and cutting it out from there,i'm only cutting it about 10mm wide and filling the centre with paper that way theres only a small amount of adhesive on the model,i figured that was the problem last time too much adhesive tape over the model.........
Also i'm painting the wings in one hit and the fueselage in another to minimise the amount of time the tape is on the surface...............................
I'll post up a pic in the next couple of days..........J.S............

Mike;
I will amend the group build list to reflect your change of livery.

G'day everyone,

Heres my entry for the Aussie Group build all finished. It is a Beaufighter Mk.XXI from 93 squradron. It is A8-116 'Babs'. It was built from the Tamiya kit with an Aires cockpit and Aussie decals.

Your Beaufighter looks great pingtang, a job well done.
Thanks for participating in the group build, see you around the forums.

Heres how i'm masking the Spit using 40mm Tamiya masking tape...

I stuck the masks on and then preshaded the panel lines black.....

a quick airbrush rinse and then on to the green

And then the moment i was dreading pulling the masks off, thankfully there was no seepage and the masks didn't pull any of the underlying brown paint off....

Now all i have to do is the camo over the fueselage,i figured it would be easier for me to do it in 2 stages cause i'm lazy and it takes to long to do it in one hitWink [;)]

The one big difference with this VB reverse livery ship is that is was never repainted, so reverting iit back to original ANSETT livery is pretty simple.

With the difficulties experienced so far with the old Roodecals I decided to test the gloss clear coat on unused decals on an old bodyshell so they were sprayed today (Tamiya clear gloss). So far so good.

Just some progress pics of the Sabre so far.
I have to admit, I have never used so much filler on anything in my life, this bird takes the cake.

Hopefully, this week will see it sprayed with primer, and any imperfections (wishful thinking!) sorted out, before the black coat.

Smart move Nicholma, your'e a wise modeler....................

Tweety1 i wasn't that confident using the 40mm,but once it was restuck to the contact backing paper it lost alot of it's tack,i also tryed to keep the width of the masks as narrow as possible to minimize the amount of tape on the painted surface,iv'e only just finished the rest of the masks so's i should be finishing the green sometime tonight........
BTW will post some more pics up in a couple of days...........

I can see the amount of filler required on the Sabre...

Hi all

Progress report on my Minicraft 737-300 that was to be a VB "reverse livery" ship but after a nasty session with unworkable decals Banged Head [banghead] has now been reborn into an Ansett special scheme 737-300

Plenty yet to do, but the decaling stage is now nearly complete.

I have learned a lot from this, my first airliner build and when I build another one (lots more planned) it will be much smoother. Going to look lovely on the shelf though Smile [:)]

Hope you all like it

cheers

madmike, that is one cool looking airliner.
The decals look like a mongrel to do.

j.s., I'm kinda looking forward to seeing some spits myself, always wanted to do one, but never got round to it.

Spits, did someone say spits.

I decided to do some post shading on my Spit the other night when I got a tad carried away and actually ended up almost ruining the whole cammo job. As it was I had to completely re-do the fading on the panels. Banged Head [banghead] Dunce [D)]

Tonight I have just finished the first coat and all the panels are looking really bleached out. Tomorrow night I will spray the final blending coat on and try and take some before and after pictures. Getting there!

Tweets, I agree with Jules, I am really looking forward to checking out your Sabre.

Mike your airliner is looking awesome by the way.

Cheers

A little thick but most forgiving. I used Aeromaster Sol II to bed down the decals on the engine nacelles and the results were great.

I found a fleck of dust under one area and I managed to peel back the decal, remove the offending blight and I then bedded down the decal again with Future. Looks great!

The tail decal is a little transparent an you can see the overlapped BMF underneath but it is not too obvious. But with decal softener and Future it went on fine as well! Just need to touch up the back edge with matching paint now and repaint the BMF area to close slight gaps between the decal and the pre-sprayed BMF leading edge.

I have two sheets of this subject and will do another one one day as the colours are so rich and vibrant.

This kit is not the best I have done but as a first airliner, I am delighted with the way it has gone so far . Mrs Madmike even purchased a Revell 1:144 Concorde today for my Wedding Anniversary present. Kisses [:X]

Recommended decals! Thumbs Up [tup]

Weathering and final assembly is next.

cheers
