I started painting the interior of the YAK 1 today and almost had a disaster when I was trimming the carb intake tI dropped the piece, it took an hour or so to find it but thank goodness it was found.

Okay! I've just finished painting the avenger! I have yet to add the breakable bits, wash it and apply the decals. This Avenger will be one of 12 built for a 1/48 scale aircraft carrier my IPMS is building. It will be dressed in the colors of VC-10 while they served on the ill-fated USS Gambier Bay. I can't wait to finish this one off!

The wings haven't been glued on yet, because i want to get the opinion of the other avenger builders, so the wings aren't sticking out differently at odd angles. Big Smile [:D]

The sad part about this build is that i won't be able to display this one in my room! Maybe i'll just buy another TBF-1C? Hehehe... Wink [;)]

That looks fantastic, Braillescale! It looks like you went all-out on that one! How about a closer shot of that exposed engine?

Oh, and out of curiosity, what color did you do the exhausts in? Big Smile [:D]

The exhausts were painted Metalizer Burnt Metal and finished off with brown pastels. Here is a close up of the engine access area. It is a little difficult to adeqately light the inside of it.

Last night I tried to dry fit the wings now that I have the fuselage almost completed on my A-36. Ouch! The left side of the bottom wing is very badly warped! There is a gap of more than an inch between the wing tips when I hold the top and bottom halves together. The bottom half is curved strongly downward on the outer 1/2 of the left side. The two halves on the right side fit perfectly. I am pretty sure I haven't done anything to cause the warp, so it must have come that way. This is the only time I have had this trouble with an AM kit.

Looks like I am going to have to scald the wing to straighten it.

OUCH Tim, that's a lot of warpage. Be careful with the hot water, don't scald yourself in the process.

This is my first AM kit (an SBD5). Why didn't anybody warn me that there is so much detail in these kits. A month later and I think I am finished with the interior.

I matched it up with my old Monogram SBD that I built many moons ago and holy moly, what a difference between these two. I have to pick up some film tonight and get some pics.

Well, I still am waiting fro my 35mm pics from te processor, so I'm forced to use my digital, which had spent about 8 hrs in a cooler full of ice water. Since then, the apperature hasn't worked right, but anyway, here's a link to an attempt at a "progress pic" of my Dauntless.

Thanks Rick. Being out of aircraft building for so many years, I'm feeling a bit rusty on all this super detailed stuff.

After building a bunch of Monogram and Revells for so many years. This kit (SBD-5) is a big eye opener. I can't believe how well the Tenex adheres to the plastic. I got the fuse and wings together last night, and after a little trimming and filing, they fit like hands to a glove. The only seam is where the bottom of the wing joins the fuse. There wasn't much support there so I beefed up the cradle with some sheet styrene and then everything fit in place.

I'm hooked on this AM kit, so whats a few extra dollars, I'm getting the SBD-3 kit at the next HL 1/2 price sale. Hope they have it!

Got the SBD primed and found a crack down the center of the fuselage. Need to reglue that and do a little more sanding around the front, then start my tri-color paint job tonight. Hope to have it done by the weekend. Depends on how long it will take me to mask the canopies. Sure is nice they give you both the closed and open canopy versions. The closed version makes it easier to paint the plane without damaging the interior with blockout material.

Scott.

The hole in the left side is a defect in the injection process that I decided to use a little artistic licence on and have mechanic a field repair patch on. I havnt done many aircraft but I know that I will probably get another Accurate kit as this one was very this was nice.
