ARMOR - Pz IV Group Build

huh? maybe not, its just been dead for awhile so I just figured...

I thought the whole idea behind this gb was that it had an open end date. Did I miss something in all the posts?? When did it end? I am SO confused!

This build ended a long time ago.

Thanks, Eric. I'm not sure how successful I'm being, but we'll see. One of my big concerns, now, is how much of it I'm going to strip off when I put the tools on! I did manage to get the shurzen brackets on without breaking off the little hooks on the side of the hull or any of the handles. Of course, I still have the other side to do, yet!

Okay, everyone. Here are a bunch of pics of my DML IV J as she sits now.



Lower left side of the hull, with the tracks on.



This is a shot of the kit tracks. I drilled out the spaces on the side of the each link. I'm not sure you can see it in this pic, but it was a pain. Especially as they were glued up as you see them now when I did it. Much easier if I'd done it before!



Lower hull, left side with the tracks off.



Turret with the shurzen brackets attached. This is the kit barrel.



Lower hull front plate. Notice the light circles below the handles. That's where the instruction sheet says to drill a hole. But nothing mounts there. I filled the holes then drilled new ones to mount the handles. DML strikes again.



Engine Deck. Notice the filled sink marks on the left side. First for me, but I've never seen sink marks on a DML kit before.



Left side of the upper hull. The Eduard PE shurzen brackets and brass rod have been attached. One of the pieces of the "bed spring" shurzen is in the background. It's really beautiful. I hope I don't screw it up putting it on.



Left side of the upper hull from the front. Here's a different view of the PE shurzen brackets and the brass rod.



This is a shot of the inside of the upper hull. The tabs on the bottom of the turret wouldn't fit down inside the lower hull slots, so I ground away the inside of the upper hull. It is almost paper thin. I hope it holds up with time! But at least now the turret fits into the hull and turns.



Another shot of the left side of the hull with the upper hull fitted down onto the lower hull, just to give an idea of how it will all look in the end.

By the way, I painted the lower hull with Tamiya Dunkelgelb spray as I finished them up. But it looked way to gloss to me. I've since resprayed it using my airbrush and Model Master Dunkelgelb enamel.

I didn't know this thread had been moved here. I am really sorry for having neglected it so long. I really do feel badly! I can see I've got a lot of reading to catch up on. I did read all the posts on this page. The picutes that are posted are terrific. Great job as always by you guys!

I am at the point of putting the shurzen on the turret and the hull of my DML. It's going pretty well, so far. I'll try and get some pics taken tonight and posted.

Very nice Trevor, I like the weathering techniques you did.

edog, I think it work real well with this Snow-Tex stuff that I got. I does look a little uniform but it gives it that light spray of mud look. It was a little hard to control were it was going with the tooth brush. One thing that I did do was I put most of the mud on before any roadwheel, return rollers, idlers or sprockets when on that way I got a nice even coating of mud behind them.
I will try this again but I will do it over a heavier type of mud application. I think that should look real good.

Trevor, I am glad to hear that you learned a lot on this kit! Those are my favorite kind of builds. I just noticed the headlights, they do look great!! How did you like that mud technique? I have tried something similar twice now and not been happy with either attempt.

Rich, I cant wait for pics of your Pz. About the duffle bags and such, doesn’t Tamiya make an equipment set? worst case scenario, you could always cover the "equipment" with a tarp!

edog the techniques turn out great. The weld seams show up on the actual kit real well. Those seams were easy to make once I started to use the Italeri spur. It soften up a little easier with the liquid cement. The post shading was alot easier that I though it would be and I was very pleased with results. As far as gloss coating goes I will pick and chose what I do that on, because I have done it on OD before and didn't like the results too much.
Some of the other thing I did was drill out the head lights and put a drop of resin in each one which came out great. The other thing that I tried was using texture snow that I got from an art store. I mixed some acrylic paint to it and flicked it off a tooth brush to simulate the mud.

Trevor,, F1 looks great,,,, Well I have dirtied up my IV J and am in the prosess of adding equipment to the outside. as soon as I have done that I will post pics. Anyone know of a company that sells WWII German crates and duffle bags??

Trevor, The pz IV looks good. I like the panzer gray finish!! I really think it turned out well. The decals really seem to have set well too. I cant make out the weld seems too well, but I was wondering how you thought these new techniques turned out? I think you did a great job on all accounts! Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed this build. I tried several new thing on this one. This was the first that I've made weld seams, and I tried edogs post shading. this is also the first time that I've gloss coated my armor to put on the decals.
The hatches are open because I'm going to add a figure or two. They're not there right now because the ones I want to use need to be modified a little.

As all way comments are welcome.

Yeah edog the Tri Nations were great this year ( if your a S A supporter )the teams were all playing good rugby this year which makes for a great comp...........
BTW i don't mind South africa winning as long as the Wallabies beat the All BlacksLOL....

Well gang I still have a little bit of work to go yet but for the most part it is finished. I need to add some mud and dirt and some branches to show that it is in the Normandy area.

Harrison, I am a SA fan myself. I lived in Capetown for 7 years, but left when I was 9, so I never got to play rugby there. How about that Tri Nations? Now that was some great rugby!! You have to love it when all 3 of the teams are such an even match.

Here's an in progress picture of my Italeri PzIV F1. This is a little on the old side. I have add a little wash and some decals since then. I have been a busy myself and haven't work on her much.

WOW, it has really been dead in this thread for a while. I am not sure if it is because all the group builds are in a different forum from the rest of the armor, or if there has just been a loss in interest concerning this topic.

Anyway, I still have 4 more Pz IVs to go, but I am not going to be able to get much done until at least November. (that’s when the rugby season ends for me)

Fiasco, thanks for the posts. Very fun little toy you have made there. It still looks like you have some bugs to work out though.

Harrison, very nice paint job. I love the camo. Overall it looks like a nice clean build.

I'm fairly new to FSM forum, just noticed this GB.
I played around with a web page last year with some walkround pictures of a Panzer IV at Bovington Tank Museum UK
Just thought it might come in handy. Let me know what you think (of the concept of zooming in on images in this way. If I get some positive feedback I'm thinking of doing some others) You'll need macromedia shockwave player to view
