I have never participated in a group build before. If I decide to add anything to my diorama later in the build, is that a problem? I have an M7 Priest I may want to add in if time permits.......

jwest, let me ask this.... i've tried winter washes before and they always are too thick or cover too much of the vehicle..... is there a trick? i heard that some tankers in the field would actually dip branches in white paint and wash their vehicles that way....

A method I learned from Dwight Ta-ala was to paint your base coat and then do a really uneven white wash. In fact, check out his picture in this thread http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=29729
If your washes are too thick, just add more thinner. Go real light and build it up until you get that look And yes, the real think was put on with brooms, branches or just thrown on with whatever they had. Really made some uneven jobs

DanCooper,

If you head up to Bastonne, could you snap a few pics in the forest??? I realize it isn't quite winter, but I really would like to see some pics of those trees. Only if you get a chance. You can email me or post them here. You will be an invaluable first hand reference.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Ted

no problem.. I started putting the PE on my King Tiger last night. Man is Eduard's instructions vague! The lower hull (sans wheels) is ready for painting and adding the mud behind the wheels.

Jason-thx for the link on the weathered Sherman-a very good reference. Sending the wife to the local library to get some more resources on the Battle of the Bulge. Might even end up learning something....

Jason, is the use of my jeep still OK? I started a week ago on it when I thought this build was Kaput. If not, no biggie, I will just do the smaller dio as I said before. ModelGrandpa gave me the nod, but I want to make ure it's ok before cutting my baseboard this evening.

Also, any badge ideas yet??

The Jeeps fine, Ted. I promise I will not dipatch the GB Police to your house where they will smash your models and break your gluing hand! Also the badge looks great.

bobbaily- now you can use the line "But honey, it's educational!" if she wants youto mow the yard instead of working on your model!!

Jason-true, but it's difficult to come up with excuses for not painting the house when I'm busy painting a model.....and she's not too keen on olive drab for the family room...

Well, hopefully the group build provides us all with not only good references and critiques, but fool-proof excuses for modelling more!

I'm startin' the M4A1 a little late. Ordered some reference material from Squadron, though this will be strickly OOB. It's been a good 25 years since I put together a tank model:) From what I've found this kits had some good reviews, so I shouldn't have TOO many problems! If someone could let me know for sure if this type was present during that part of the push into Germany I would appreciate it. There's about a half-dozen LHS's within half-hour of my base here in Atsugi.

lodni_k- I added you to the list with a Sherman, but I am not sure if the A1 was used. The only ones I know of for sure are the M4A3's. Someone will let you know for sure.

tankergeoff, I will work tirelessly to get you a good excuse for the wife

ah, you'll waste your time, jwest....... LOL.

i was actually thinking of adding either a 105mm howitzer or a mortar carrier halftrack with several mortar positions with the M16 AA to create a rear area of some sort......

That sounds really cool. Can't wait to see it. Amazing how these things grow- I went from a King Tiger, to a King Tiger with PE and aluminum barrel to aKing Tiger with PE, aluminum barrel and Fallschirmjagers, to a full blown diorama. By the end of it I may just build a life size replica of Bastogne

i even went out today and got a big block of air-hardening modeling clay to build up the terrain and attempt some covered foxholes and such............. I think I watched Band of Brothers too many times.

Ditto, I turn on an episode while I work in my shop. Kinda gives inspiration to your work. I especially like the interviews at the beginning. Those were just normal guys forced to do extraordinary things that made them heros.

That's funny because I was working on my King Tiger and looked over in the corner and saw my Band of Brother's DVD box and thought to myself "I need to watch that this weeknend!". I probably will not be watching "Battle of the Bulge" however. I am worried that my King Tiger might turn out to look like an M-48

A good place to see what is available is www.greatmodels.com. Use their "cross reference" feature on the left of the home page. When you click on it, towards the middle of the page is FIGURES. You can have it show you all WWII US figures. Really nice search feature
