Darren, which Iwata do you have???

I'm after another airbrush for finer detail work, and my Omni 4000 is to awkward for close up camo scheme painting.

Darren,

Thanks for the tip. Perhaps my brush might get even more of a workout!!. NAHHH!!! I want to PLAY!! Smile [:)]!! Oh well ... I actually was looking at a great hint on the site just last night of using silly putty (the kids toy!!) for those complex curves in a camo situation.

Blu Tak works just as well cossack, if not better.
And for a slightly more feathered edge, place a piece of paper over the Blu Tak trimmed to the shape you want, and spray at right angles to it.
Works well, and looks great.
My 2 cents [2c]

Tweety's dead right Paul, Blu Tack will work just as well as Silly Putty and has the following advantages, it's cheap and readily available. Whereas hunting down Silly Putty might be a bit of a chore.
Here is a pic of a Spit Mk.VIII that I did for the Aussie GB this year, which had the camo masking done with Blu Tack sausages.

Ahhhh i never get tired of looking at that Spitfire DarsonThumbs Up [tup]and it's good to have you back, hope you enjoyed the beach i kinda take it for granted being so close to the Gold CoastThumbs Up [tup]

Cossack years ago before i got serious about my modelling i used the Paasche VLS and from memory it was very good, unfortunatly none of those older models survivedSad [:(]

Tweety all i'll be adding to my 109 is a set of Eduard coloured seat belts and some copper wire for brake lines, I'd like to go the hole hog but i'm in a hurry to build up a decent collection which at the moment stands at 5 finished, plus i'm still a bit of a newbie so i don't wanna stuff things upThumbs Up [tup]
The Stuka is going to be the big test, it's got a crap load of PE to go in......

Tweety I have the Iwata HP-CS which comes with a .35mm nozzle and needle as standard and it does really nice detail work. I also bought for an extra $20 a .5mm nozzle and needle for doing wider coverage work.
I had a look at the Omni 4000 on the web and it seems very similar to the Iwata, so I don't know if it would be of that much of an improvement over what you have.

Blu tack it is. Do you have any problems with removing it after the paint job? Or any other tricks for young (or new Wink [;)]) players??

And my compliments on the Spit Darren - great looking job.

cossack - Thanks for that Paul. I have only used Blu Tack sausages once (on that aircraft) and had no problems at all with any residue on the paint. The longest part of the whole job was rolling the Blu Tack into thin enough sausages so that I could get it to make the shapes I needed on the wings and fuselage. The only hint I can think of is to spray carefully fairly heavily thinned and on a low pressure (10-12psi) so that you avoid overspray from one color region to another. I hope that made sense.

JoeRugby - Welcome to the group build Joe, I received your email and have put you down for a Hurricane Mk.IIa.

Cheers

HP-CS eh.
There is alot of price differance between Badger and Iwata, so I'm still checking things out.
Love the Spit Darren, hope mine turns out just as nice, when I get round to it.

Jules, 5 finished models?, or 5 finished 109's?

good news from my side of the world!! I went to the LHS yesterday to pick up some alclad for a planned build (non GB related, a Tuskeegee airman mustang) and lo and behold right on top of the case with the alclad was a set of Aeromaster Martlet decals just sitting there... including markings for the FAA squadron in Oct 1940! It's almost like someone was pointing my way saying build it!!! So I got them and already have the kit so am ready for that... I also have a He111 and a Ju88 for back ups in case nothing else comes my way as far as ideas...

Tweety if you're interested have a look at Tamiya airbrushes, they are made by the same company that makes Iwata and are just re-badged depending on what brand they are supposed to be.

Here is an article that you might find interesting

Just don't do what I did and fill in the areas behind the Blutak with Maskol to prevent any overspray. The Maskol reacted with the Blutak, and left fine purple lines all over the place!!!!!Banged Head [banghead] Not the effect I was looking for on a Greek WWII fighter!

I tried doing some mottling on an old junker kit with bluetac and it seemed to work fairly well, you just have to reverse the colours, paint the geens on first add the bluetac and then the upper colour, the feathered edge is a little too sharp but it may be just right for the green spots on that North African 109-E black 8.......

The funny looking recon was a Blohm Und Voss 141.
Actually did that one last year, but I love to post pics of itTongue [:P]Big Smile [:D]

Well, built this year, if I remember rightly-

Tamiya Panther G 1/35
A7 Corsair II 1/48
Hase Mil24 Hind A
CAC Sabre
Bf 109
And hopefully Tamiya A6M5 Zero 1/48 for the Pacific GB.

Next year starts with
Kamov KA-52 Alligator
Bell 47
Bf 109 E3
Maybe Bf 110
Maybe Spit 8
Maybe Bf 109 G6

Alot of maybe's, will see how the GB pans out next year

One more to investigate.

I like the pistol grip idea, my hand cramped like a mongrel when I was doing the shading on my recent 109

Ahhh the Panther i remember it now with all the mud right........

And the hand cramping thing let me guess, inbetween the thumb and index finger.....

I used to get the cramping with my Aztec, got better on the 175 but non-existant with the 155... dunno why. it's shaped differently, definitely not a big profile, it seems like that would cause it to cramp worse though but it doesn't.... of course let me get back with yall when I do the mottling on my 1/72 Storch for the yet non-existant N. Africa build... should be the definitive test on whether I will cramp with this brush or not...

---edit---

went to Tamiya's site and looked at their brushes... WHEW! quite an expensive set! For the HP-CS clone it is 180.00 USD! I can get the Iwata set from dixieart.com for about $135.00...

[:0] Wow Tom you're right, I just had a look on great models and the price difference is huge. They have the Iwata HP-CS for $109 and the Tamiya for $133. From memory the prices used to be the other way around.

Cheers

Jules, Yeah, I loved weathering the Panther to death! First time using pastels to that extent, and worked well I think.

As for the cramp, mine goes from the thumb to the index finger, and also includes the middle finger[:0]
The worst case yet was when I was laying the Tamiya smoke on my 109.
I know why it happens, the AB is too thin for my stumpy fingers, so it takes alot of effort to hold it level and with control.

I was thinking of trying, and still might, of getting some liquid latex, wrapping the brush in some glad wrap, putting a glove on my hand, and using the latex pour it on to make some form of soft handle that conforms to my fingers etc, and also matches the silhouette of the AB.

Or I could get a chunk of wood and sand and file it till it's right.
But that would take up valuable modelling time!

well thats not as big as the difference of what they are chargin on the Tamiya site.. or recommending... but still, glad I looked! I was curious as to if they were a little cheaper because I am contemplating an Iwata soon... will stick to dixieart!

Which Iwata are you looking at Tom?

I had a look at Badgers 100G for finer detailed work, and I already have 2 Omni 4000.
One is used for Lacquers and Enamels, and the other exclusively for Acrylics.

But the Omni is a little to cumbersome to do camo outlining etc.

The camo on the Emil I'm doing for this GB has to be applied free hand and is pretty complex with the colour layers etc, and I really dont think the Omni with it's large cup will be very helpful.

As for the Tamiya brushes, I couldn't beleive the prices!Shock [:O]Shock [:O]

I saw the pistol grip, and thought YEAH! thats the one, then the price made my piggy bank cryBoohoo [BH]
Yeah I could buy it, but the missus would chop off my squirrel food.Black Eye [B)]

Tweety, I was looking to the HP-CS... I was worried about coverage in larger scales with the .3mm needle, but then I thought about it and I already have a Badger 175 and 155 that both can do the base coats just fine! Got the missus on the right track and thinkshe is about to give in! Cool [8D]

actually I'm finding it hard to control her and myself and wait a bit to get it to save money first... Christmas bites into the wallet when you have as many neices as she does!

a twister? she just got back from the doctors today with a fractured toe from karate! the doctor bills will mount then I wont be able to smuggle kits in the house! (Actually the missus is working on her second black belt so I walk a thin line here Wink [;)])

To be honest if I listened to her, or let her buy for me I woulnd't be here on the forum, I would be in the poor house instead! Everytime I mention a plane I like she tells me to buy the kit, whether they make it or not! Lately she found out about the Latin American group build and she already went on the net and found 3 Colombian planes she wants me to build for her.. (She is 1/2 Colombian, 1/2 American.. raised in Colombia)

Pretty soon she will have me feeling like this is a second job! lol! I mentioned I wanted an Iwata HP-CS and the price and she told me go get it... she wanted to see how it did... ::evil smirk:: I think she is close to coming over to OUR side... but then I will only have 1/2 the modeling budget so I better discourage it! Disapprove [V] poor poor me!

Tom,

I bought my HP-CS from Dixieart (great service BTW) and got the .5mm needle, nozzle and nozzle cap for an extra $20 at the same time. Now I just swap the parts over depending on whether I'm doing wide coverage or close in detail work.
If you do end up getting one you won't regret it, it's a fantastic airbrush.

Cheers

AHA!
Y'know, she could be using reverse psychology on ya TomEvil [}:)]
If she keeps tellin ya do it, you might not, and she wins.

Mine tried that for 3 months.

Now everythings back to normal, should have left well enough aloneSad [:(]

Darren, what was your Iwata shipped with, I mean which needle nozzle combo comes from the factory, and how many parts do you need to buy to get a finer/larger setup?

Sorry to badger you about it, but it's easier talking to someone who OWNS one than shopping blindly.

That and the fact I'm lazy!Smile [:)]Wink [;)]Tongue [:P]
