I tried doing some mottling on an old junker kit with bluetac and it seemed to work fairly well, you just have to reverse the colours, paint the geens on first add the bluetac and then the upper colour, the feathered edge is a little too sharp but it may be just right for the green spots on that North African 109-E black 8.......

Blu Tak works just as well cossack, if not better.
And for a slightly more feathered edge, place a piece of paper over the Blu Tak trimmed to the shape you want, and spray at right angles to it.
Works well, and looks great.
My 2 cents [2c]

Just don't do what I did and fill in the areas behind the Blutak with Maskol to prevent any overspray. The Maskol reacted with the Blutak, and left fine purple lines all over the place!!!!!Banged Head [banghead] Not the effect I was looking for on a Greek WWII fighter!

Tweety if you're interested have a look at Tamiya airbrushes, they are made by the same company that makes Iwata and are just re-badged depending on what brand they are supposed to be.

Here is an article that you might find interesting

hi guys,

been offline due to PC probs and have a million posts to read across the forums!!![:0]Smile [:)]

my girlfriend has very kindly wrapped the defiant i bought me on her bahalf for xmas, so now it's ready to go under the tree!Big Smile [:D]

in the meantime, apart from the Tiger GB (hard work getting started with a ton of AM stuff), and the Pacific GB (pleased with the mottle on my Kate), i've nearly completed "Pips" Priller's 109E of JG51 (with the cool-looking crying bird on the sidesCool [8D]), which i suppose is my way of getting into the swing of this GB a bit early!!!Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

good news from my side of the world!! I went to the LHS yesterday to pick up some alclad for a planned build (non GB related, a Tuskeegee airman mustang) and lo and behold right on top of the case with the alclad was a set of Aeromaster Martlet decals just sitting there... including markings for the FAA squadron in Oct 1940! It's almost like someone was pointing my way saying build it!!! So I got them and already have the kit so am ready for that... I also have a He111 and a Ju88 for back ups in case nothing else comes my way as far as ideas...

HP-CS eh.
There is alot of price differance between Badger and Iwata, so I'm still checking things out.
Love the Spit Darren, hope mine turns out just as nice, when I get round to it.

Jules, 5 finished models?, or 5 finished 109's?

cossack - Thanks for that Paul. I have only used Blu Tack sausages once (on that aircraft) and had no problems at all with any residue on the paint. The longest part of the whole job was rolling the Blu Tack into thin enough sausages so that I could get it to make the shapes I needed on the wings and fuselage. The only hint I can think of is to spray carefully fairly heavily thinned and on a low pressure (10-12psi) so that you avoid overspray from one color region to another. I hope that made sense.

JoeRugby - Welcome to the group build Joe, I received your email and have put you down for a Hurricane Mk.IIa.

Cheers

Blu tack it is. Do you have any problems with removing it after the paint job? Or any other tricks for young (or new Wink [;)]) players??

And my compliments on the Spit Darren - great looking job.

Tweety I have the Iwata HP-CS which comes with a .35mm nozzle and needle as standard and it does really nice detail work. I also bought for an extra $20 a .5mm nozzle and needle for doing wider coverage work.
I had a look at the Omni 4000 on the web and it seems very similar to the Iwata, so I don't know if it would be of that much of an improvement over what you have.

Ahhhh i never get tired of looking at that Spitfire DarsonThumbs Up [tup]and it's good to have you back, hope you enjoyed the beach i kinda take it for granted being so close to the Gold CoastThumbs Up [tup]

Cossack years ago before i got serious about my modelling i used the Paasche VLS and from memory it was very good, unfortunatly none of those older models survivedSad [:(]

Tweety all i'll be adding to my 109 is a set of Eduard coloured seat belts and some copper wire for brake lines, I'd like to go the hole hog but i'm in a hurry to build up a decent collection which at the moment stands at 5 finished, plus i'm still a bit of a newbie so i don't wanna stuff things upThumbs Up [tup]
The Stuka is going to be the big test, it's got a crap load of PE to go in......

Tweety's dead right Paul, Blu Tack will work just as well as Silly Putty and has the following advantages, it's cheap and readily available. Whereas hunting down Silly Putty might be a bit of a chore.
Here is a pic of a Spit Mk.VIII that I did for the Aussie GB this year, which had the camo masking done with Blu Tack sausages.

Paul from what I've heard the Paasche VL is a fine air brush that will serve you well. I have an Iwata myself and I love using it.

You're sort of lucky that you picked the Spitfire as your first ab model because the camo scheme is quite simple. Just remember one thing, Spitfire camo was painted on using rubber mats laid over the aircraft as templates, so you will need a hard edge on your paint job.

Izzy, Revell DE also makes a 1/48 Ju88 A-4/D-1 for about 12.00 you can get it from squadron, but being Revell it's probably available eslewhere too... I believe the Monogram probuilder offers a C-6 but with parts to backward mod it. (propellers, clear nose pieces etc...)

Darren,

I'm jumping in at the deep end - a double action Paasche VL that was bought for me for my birthday. I am expecting to take it REAL gentle, and have no expectations as to how it will turn out :)

Hi all, I'm back from a week down at the beach with the family so I thought I would drop in to see how things are going.

cossack - What are you using for an air brush with your Spitty, is it a single or double action brush?

mapguy - Welcome to the build, I look forward to seeing your work because the Lysander has always been a particular favorite of mine.

fightjoe - There is no cut off date for entries to the build, only a completion date of May 31st. You are more than welcome to join in any time

izzy8990 - Welcome to our little band and don't worry about your skill level. This is not a contest, it's just a group of guys building for fun and swapping some bs along the way.
You didn't say what scale you were doing but greatmodels has the 1/72 Revell AG (rmg4130) Junkers Ju.88A-4 in stock for $10.85 and in 1/48 they have the DML/Dragon 1/48 (dr5536) Junkers Ju.88C-6 Zerstorer for $23.20. The DML kit is listed as C-6 but contains all the parts for the A-4. You can find them at www.greatmodels.com

I thought about doing the Emil OOB, but after closer inspection, decided it wouldn't look right with the factory fare attached to it.

The Tamiya kit is pretty good, and I will pay less attention to the c/p as I did with my G14, seeing as you can't see much of the effort I put inSad [:(]

But as for flaps etc, on my models I feel I cant do the factory stuff to look right, but it looks good on othersConfused [%-)]
Same with preshading, I cant do that to save my life, but post shading is easy as.

hey Joe! good to see ya here! I believe the close date is May 31,2005... plenty of time to get ready! If you go to the first post here Darren lists all the particulars as well as lists the aircraft available that were involved in the BoB.

hey Izzy, yeah it would be swell if ya could post some pics... preferably a few as the model is being assembled. It's always neat to see how someone else approaches things like instrument panels and seatbelts. Helps us all learn new ways of doing things! Then a shot or two of the finished product would be nice too...

great, the Ju88 hasn't been taken up yet I dont believe... a great AC... I think the variants through C-5 or C-6 would be ok... maybe C-5 now that I think about it. Not sure who makes them out there but I will do a search and see what I can find for ya...

great to have ya along!

The only PE I am putting in the Spitfire will be harnesses!

I am going to try and keep this build as OOB as possible, though that may change when I crack open the box and re-familiarise myself with the decals once more.

cheers

I think they tried to attract too large an Audience when it came to Pearl Harbour......
The Boys want to watch the Battle while the girls dig the Romance......
Now if they had made it like Tora Tora Tora it would have been a winner.....

Jutland made with today's SFX would be great, an all big gun BattleThumbs Up [tup]

Tweets more PE eh, i'm making my Emil OOB but the Stuka is gonna be full of Metal....

Funny enough, even though the respresentation of the Korean War just isn't there... I love MASH because being a combat medic myself, it was pretty close to how the day to day routine went when ?I was deployed... constant joking, very "off the wall" sense of humor. And believe it or not each of the characters in MASH had a real life counterpart everywhere I went...

Just ordered my PE set for the 109 E from Squadron, hopefully it will be here in a fortnight!!!!
Providing they don't mess it up like they did last time, and send it surface mail
Placed that order in October, wont be here till January, if I'm lucky!

I had the chance to see the Premiere of Pearl Harbour in Waikiki, Hawaii when I was there in 2001. But after standing over the sunken remains of the Arizona, I though it would be "the wrong thing to do" to see such a crass representation of the "day of infamy" For Gods sake, they protrayed the US Admiral commanding Pearl Harbour Naval Base as a hero!!

The real Admiral was sent home in disgrace!

Battle of the River Plate is another good movie, and how about a movie about Jutland?

cheers

Mike
