Community Build Project #3 - Figure

Amen. I just need to find a good subject and I can get started on that! More on that soon.

I was in Calgary on Friday/Saturday and I got a really cool 1/144 scale Bandai kit. Looks like alot of fun and I've got some ideas for some 'creative' additions to the kit. Won't get started for a week or two, but at least I've got the kit ready to go.

Hello Guys,

Number 3 is on the way!!! Managed to snatch 4 'Batman & Robin' figures on e-Bay. They are 1/16, made by... Hasegawa (!). The set include Batman, Robin (who would have guessed that!), Batgirl and Mr Freeze.

Started Batgirl, of course! The body is as nice as a Ferrari... Assembly is easy but the plastic is a bit weird, very soft, and 'feels' like a cross between 'normal' plastic as found in a 'normal' kit and that pliable plastic that Airfix 's figures sets were (are) made of. Needless to say, this causes some minor problems with the cleaning of the parts, and only a very sharp knife does the job right. Sanding, with very fine sandpaper is OK, but I've used Milliput to fill in the few gaps (arms/torso, mainly), and blended it with water straight away to avoid any sanding.

I've put the figure onto the stand that is included in the box. That's where I'm at at this moment. Next, primer. The paint job should not cause too much hassles, being 95% black. Only a part of the face is 'flesh', which has always been my problem with figures. Obviously the black must look shiny, black PVC like. I'll probably use shades of grey to highlight then give the figure a few thin coats of Future...

What are the rules for a CBP kit? Can we add our own ideas to the kit?(IE: paint it differently than shown on the box, or add scrathbuilt detail?)
If so, I may already have two very nice contestants already finsihed!

I hope we get some better photo returns on this one than on previous projects. I would really like to see the results from this.

Hi TenchiMuyo, scroll up to read Heylonghair's original message to get the basic info on this 3rd round of CBP. I think I can safely say that it's OK to add details, modify, scratch if need be. The original CBP, with basic tools and only what was in the box was found to be too restrictive so we 'opened up' the gates.

With this one, I think I might at last meet the deadline!

Mike, yes, it would be nice to have pics from everyone involved, but I'm first to blame since my camera is not working properly and I'm awaiting my new one!

I'm working on a Tamiya 1/35th German WWII Machine Gun Troop. This will be my fist time really doing any kind of Firgures. I have started already, and I have had a little hard of a time with it. Painting the face and hands have been the hardest part for me (since I don't have the steadiest of hands). I'm not painting the machine gun troops like they were normally found (becuase I didn't have the money to buy the model and more than one bottle of paint, flesh color), so I'm using Oilive Drap instead of Flied Grey. So it won't be 100% true, but hey at least I'm doing something.....LoL.

The kit has 7 figures in it. It has one Lt. who is looking though biconulars. It has 3 machine gunners. 2 of machine gunners have a guy feeding bullets though the gun, and the 3rd gunner and someone help holding the machine gun up.

Well, I started on my Gundam Wing thingy and I had my first mistake already (haven't even started gluing yet). The kit comes will a bunch of these little pieces that are intended to represent the 'joints' of the finished robot. It looks like they're intentionally 'softer' than the kit plastic so that they allow movement of the various limbs and weapons (sorta like the little poly 'caps' that Tamiya usually has in their auto kits for holding the wheels on). Well, I'm not sure who dyed my hair that day, but I decided to paint them black for some reason. Of course, the paint didn't stick and generally made a big mess. I stripped the paint and now need to start over.
I really like these big 'robots', but am not attracted to their colorful paint jobs. I'd like to try something different. Perhaps 'camo' of some sort? Anyone have any good ideas/suggestions for a unique (but not too difficult) appearance?

Ok at least those links worked. Finally. There are 5 pics of the firgures I'm doing. I'm not finished yet. I still have to do some touchups to it. But that is it.

Excellent work, adws. How about a little run-down on the techniques, etc. that you used?

Well, here is my first update. I've got my Silver Surfer put together. Now I have to start the puttying and filing/sanding. The gaps between the joints are terrible, some as big as 1/16" or more. I'm going to pick up some Milliputt and try my hand at that. That will probably take me a few days at least and then it will be time to paint. I'm going to have to try and find a digital camera so that I can post some pics.

Well I didn't do anything special. The only thing that I did was painted everything before I started putting together. Before I even remove it from the thing that all the pieces come on. I know once I remore the pieces I have to do a little bit of painting,. I have found for me that works best for me. Easier to paint liitle items still attach, than trying to hold them with my fingers or anything else.

Everything is also hand painted. I didn't use my airbush. I think for my next figures I will try to use my airbush.

Got mine started. Fig is cleaned up and I painted the face (oils)and sallet. Some assembly work has been completed and the initial base colors for the gambeson, hauberk, livery coat and cuisses are done (acrylics). The accessories (buckler, miseriecord and arrows) are blocked in. Started some work on the display base.

Adws, good job, they look quite neat. Now what you need is to put them on a small diorama, put them in context. They'll look even better!

I've already started building for the diaroama. I have built a 88mm anti-aircraft gun (Sd.kfz.7/2 flack 37). I just bought a 8ton Semi track (sd.kfz.7). Going to start building that when I get my pe part. Oh I have also built some barricades. I'm just trying to find either some barded wire or razor wire.

I have a long way to go before I finsih the diorama, but hey at least I started....Lol

So how did everyone do? Just thought I would ask.

Update. First coat of (white) primer revealed a few places where the sanding/trimming had not been 100% smooth. Re-worked those areas (the primer somehow made it easier to work that weird softish plastic. Second coat of primer, black, this time, has just been put on. Looks good. She is quite gorgeous, the Babe..! Can't wait to give it a shiny look. I left the head primd in white as this will be easier to cover with flesh tones and light browns fo the hair.

Here's an update on my Silver Surfer.

The seams around the joints were terrible so I had a lot of filling to do. I started puttying a couple of days ago and did some sanding yesterday. It's working out quite well actually. I finished puttying all the joints tonight and will try and get them sanded down tomorrow. After that it will be ready to paint. Murray has generously offered to drop off some SNJ Polishing Powder for me to try (Thanks Murray). It will be somewhat of an experiment because I have never tried that stuff before. I have read some really good things about it though so hopefully I can muddle my way through it. I haven't decided yet if I am going to finish the surfboard the same way or do something a little different to create some contrast. I have been looking at some of that color-changing paint (I forget what brand at the moment) called "Ice". It is basically a black undertone with different colored metallic specks in it. It looks pretty cool and I think would go along pretty well with the subject. That is still up in the air though. It's really hard to find reference pictures of him (go figure).

Anyway, I am still plugging away and am actually further ahead that I was with the last CBP so that is a very positive sign.
I have already taken some in progress pictures (with a regular camera) and so I will try and get them scanned somewhere and post them as well as some finished pics when I'm done.
3 weeks and counting. No pressure!!
