Thanks guys. I'm kind of anxious on this one, cause after it, there is a 120mm Mounted Red Lancer waiting. The cool thing was my wife pushed me into getting that one. I just have to paint it to look like her horse......

As I hit the next milestone I post more.

Well, I'm still plugging away at the Silver Surfer. The puttying, sanding, smoothing, etc. is taking a lot longer than I had imagined. It's starting to come together but there is still a fair amount of work to do. I put a second coat of primer on last night and found some more seams, dips, etc that need some extra putty so that's my afternoon filled up. I did do a bit of experimenting with the polishing powder and man, that stuff is amazing. As long as I can get the body smoothed out nice, it will look awesome! I tried it over a black basecoat and am going to do another test over a white basecoat to see what a difference it makes. I did take some in-progress pictures with my regular camera so once I get those developed I'll see if I can get them posted.

Hey guys.

I am sorry to say that I'm gonna be a no-show for this CBP. All intentions were good, but life has taken a turn and I've just had zero time to spend on my favorite hobby. I'll still get it finished, but unfortunately it's going to be way late.

I'm moving to a new house in a few days and all of my modelling stuff is now packed away. I have no idea how long it will be before I'll be able to set it up again, so I'll have to live vicariously through you guys for a while!!

Me too.....
Unfortunately I had a little set back and lost some time on the figure. I will not be meeting the July 1 deadline. It's so close to finishing too. Ah well, maybe next one. I'll post the pics anyway in the figure section when he's complete.

Sorry to have missed this one.

I know it's past July 1st but here are the latest "railroad " figures I worked on last month. They are titled "Subway riders"

Those are really cool. Did you sculpt those from scratch?

Yes they are original sculpts done for a model railroad manufacturer. They are sculpted in 1/16 scale and then panagraphed down to 1/48 (O scale).

Wow, Mike. That is incredible!! I can see that I've got a lot to learn yet. It's a good thing my Silver Surfer is all one color. Yep, I'm still working (?) on him. I've got a little more sanding to do and then one last coat of primer (hopefully) and then a coat of paint followed by the polishing powder and he's done.

Mike, it's simply superb. Have had to stop working on my BatGirl for the moment, 'cause I'm just too busy with other non-modeling related stuff... I long to complete it, though.
Thinking about the future, would we want to start project #4 in September? And if so, what about a ship?

Hey dj. Well, we'll have to see what everyone else thinks but I would be up for another one in Sept. Hopefully I'll be done the Silver Surfer by then. Tongue [:P]

A ship sounds fine to me. That's something else that I've never built before. I've actually been eyeing that personal watercraft model that Monogram just came out with. Would that fit into the 'ship' category? Anyways, we've got lots of time yet. We'll just let the stragglers finish up first and then see if we can regroup. Big Smile [:D]

I could go for that (Project #4 being a ship) Its as good a project as any. September 1 is a good start time too.

Maybe I'll be able to hit the deadlline on this one. (lol)

Thanks for the comments guys.

This whole idea if a CBP is fantastic. It gives a realistic deadline and is a wonderful opportunity for builders to expand their repetoire of techniques. Kudos to you guys who are the drive behind this. By doing models in different disciplines it allows us to learn new techniques and improve our abilities in the disciplines we would prefer. Different types of kits make you concentrate on different aspects of modlebuilding. i.e. If you build a car, you have to pay much more attention to the finish than you would say a tank. Not that its harder or easier but that its different. Thus expanding knowledge and technical ability. Exposing the builder to a different type of assembly, technique and way we look at our subjects and an appreciation for what others are doing. The deadline provides a drive or impetus to keep going and seek solutions to quandries and problems that would otherwise slow down the building process. Normally if I reach an obstacle, I take my time and look for the answer passively, but with this deadline it provides a gaol that makes you get up and do the research or problem solve. LEading to the advantages of research, or the learning of experimentation. Necessity does act as the mother of invention.

Personaly, I would like to see not only more partcipation, but a better response in the form of either in progress photos or completed project photos. This goes hand in hand not only with inspiration but also with the learning process. Besides, I'd like to see these other projects. I'm pretty darn curious as to what others are working on and the techniques and results they're producing. Its fun and sort of the idea behind all this, is it not?

Eventually I'd like to see one of these CBP's be a all the same kit. Just to see what others are doing and they're interpretation of a project. Sure it may be boring for some, but there is an individual "fingerprint" on each kit, in the build, detailing or the finish.

Thanks

Mike

Mike, I agree with you on all points. I'm a bit guilty of not showing up my work in progress. I did get a new digital camera but actually find little time at home to do stuff like adding pics onto Ron's site and such... I've yet to meet the deadline too, but that's not what's important here. Trying out new things is what's CBP is all about. I haven't built a ship in a long time (5 years I think), and I'm quite ready to try something a bit more complicated with them, in particular etched details. I have a number of sailing ships I'd like to build one of those days, but that will be for later I think. I also have a Roman galley but I lack info to start it.

There's no minimum experience required, ILuv3ggs. That's the idea of this project, getting better through doing things you've never done before. Armour has not been done yet, no. Maybe project #5..?

Anyone who wants to join is welcome. It's not about how 'good' the end result is (you're the only important judge of your own work anyways). It's more about creating a common focus and sharing the thoughts and ideas that go along with the building process.
Enjoy !!

Just finished these figures the other night. Intended for my King Tiger. Sorry for the low resolution pics. My digital camera is 5 years old. Still saving for a new one.

Just finished this three days ago. These are German Paratroopers hitching a ride on a King Tiger (probably in the Ardennes).

German Paratroopers: Dragon
Tank Crew: Tamiya & Academy
Tank: Tamiya King Tiger

Sorry for the low resolution of the picture. My digital camera is 5 years old. I am still saving for a new one.

Well.

Better late than never I suppose. The first is a WH40K dreadnought that I had laying around forever, next is a terminator chaplain, the third set is my next project, my first larger scale figure attempted...wish me luck. The back banner on the dread was done in colored pencil, learned a valuable trick from my daughter, apparently clear flat will cause pencil to smudge (thus the smudges) but hairspray seals colored pencil perfeclty. The back banner for the chaplain is still a project in the works, I am attempting a large scale drawing then reducing through photo shop. I'll let you know how it turns out. Res is a little screwy, still trying to figure out whether its the camera or the dummy behind the camera (more than likely the later). Enjoy Wink [;)]

Dwight and Wolfp, your figures looks really neat! Those camouflaged uniforms look real complicated, Dwight. And that Chaplain thingy is superb. How did you do the 'bone' colour, Wolfp?

I am very proud of that one and the way it turned out, its one of those times where you goof around using a different technique and it just comes out right. I used layering and all told I want to say there are 7 shades ranging from a burnt umber to an almost white (I have an annoying habit of not writing down notes while doing this, so I am not sure if I could reproduce the mixing proprtions again if I wanted to). Another habit I have gotten away from is using white to lighten colors, I may use it in the final highlight but nowhere else, the deep base color was just continually mixed with yellow in less proportion as the color got lighter. Since I started using the color wheel I have noticed my figures look a whole lot better.

Wolfp.

I like it. Wish I would have been able to do more work on my Gundam dude. It will definitely get done. I might have to resurrect this thread from the archives to post the finished pics...
