AIRCRAFT - Latinamerican Air Forces

Manuel - what is amazin is last year one of the children I talked to was from near where one of the 201 airmen now lives according to the internet! (Nuevo Laredo) and still they had no idea! I have talked to children and parents from places like Mexico City where the monument is in the plaza near the tribute to 'los seis heroes' is and they still did not know of them.

I learned of them at an early age when it was printed in our newspaper here. When I found there were markings for the unit I was glad to do it as I was surprised at how few here in the United States (especially Texas) know about them.. and even more surprised at how little the people here from Mexico know of them!!!

hey Tony!!! yeah I'm still in... I am really itching to build the Escuadron 201 P-47 but waiting till I get a few more NMF kits under my belt. I am experimenting with what combination of primers and spray tachniques on a few GB's I am in.. I really want to do this one nice because I am donating it to a classroom for new arrivals from Latin America... I'm going to get a small glass case and all to go with it...

Thanks for the pictures Manuel! I like that first aircraft, what is it?

I also like the trainer... it is VERY well done!!! especially for scratchbuilt! I noticed the O2 hoses and all inside... very detailed!

Good to see you're still in. I've been wanting to do this Uruguayan Hellcat for a couple of years now, so lets go for it. I'll look forward to seeing that T-Bolt, NMF and all. I've not tried Alclad II myself yet, so I'll have to move in that direction soon.

Tony - Alclad2 is a dream.. once you learn it... I found that for me using future as a base (thinned future at that.. I thin it with Tamiya Acrylic thinner) and spraying it at about 15psi I don't get any grainy areas and it goes down like GLASS... then once you put the Alclad over that it is as shiny as... well it's really shiny. and uniform...

Now that I seem to have mastered the technique (1.5 bottles of Alclad and $13,00 later ) I am ready for the Jug... I've really wanted to build this for awhile... as soon as I found out there were decals for it I bought them. I just remember how surprised I was to find out Mexico fought in WWII when I was a kid. It always stuck with me based on that newspaper article honoring them I read...

And as was discussed earlier... I have a special fondness for Uruguay. would love to see that Hellcat!

Hadn't heard of using Future under it, must give that a try. I had heard of people having trouble with the Alclad black primr, or whatever it's called. I might use that technique to gloss over the Hunter I'm building for the Belgian AF GB. It's ready to decal once I gloss it so I'm off to try it right now !

Tony - Future is one of the primers Alclad lists for non-shiny finishes of its' products... A nice shiny futured surface really gets a nice glow out of the Alclad... I tried the Alclad2 black primer but after 2 weeks (and more) it would leave fingerprints in it if I touched it... I had to ditch the jug I was originally doing for this one because of that... I tried MM gloss black but again I had some small grains in the paint with it... so the future seems to do the trick. They also recommend auto primer gone over with 2000+ grit sandpaper to get it glossy..

Well I'm too lazy to sand that primer so future is my route!

And as far as providing a gloww coat I think the thinned future is the way to go too! I willl post pics tomorrow of my F3F I am doing for another GB and let you see if it is for you based on how it looks...

It has been 4 months since the last post...is this GB still going on?

It is still in my mind if not on my modeling table!  Things have been busy here... we had a hurricane in September which took the roof from my modeling room.  In October my mom had surgery, etc.. etc.. things are finally becoming normal again so hopefully I can fit this build in.

Thanks for reminding me though!  It's in the back of my head to do it I just never seem to get there...

I also have a bunch of proyects, but you know how it is...one thing or another... I just finished a SBD-5 of the US Navy with Mexican markings, the colors are NS Sea Blue/Med Blue/white, but with mexican triangles and tricolor band on the rudder.

These airplanes were used to train the Mexican pilots in San Diego, Ca. 

SAWI - with the triangles on both wings, or just one with the US star on the other like the 201st had on their planes in the Phillipines?  I have an extra SBD I could do that on with another set of decals from Aztec... the P-47 and the SBD have roughly the same size wings so the measurements should be correct.

Well a year and a half later I actually have begun my kit...  so far I've been working on the cockpit, I am trying a few new things and also trying to get out a modeling slump I had been in.  I was rushing to finish models with no enjoyment at all.

Here is the cockpit in progress, some obvious things like painting the part of the seat support below the seat have yet to be done.  (I used the Ultracast seat with molded in belts and the lower parts of the supports broke when I tried to free them from the mold so I cut the legs from the kit support and glued them to the seat.  I have yet to paint them.

Nothing is glued together yet, it is just placed together for pictures.

Instrument panel, I used the kit decal for the IP, I am ordering a punch and die set so I am anxious to see what I can do for the IP's with that.

I should be done with the cockpit this week and on to gluing the body together!  I am not sure if I will stick to the whole Aztec models set of decals (with all FAM markings) or use some kit decals to represent a plane used during the war.  I am using the Tamiya P-47D Bubble top kit which is a P-47D-30 RA so I might go for the "Adele" markings in the AM decals.

Afther some much months I'am here, I hope to all of yours wish to continue this Group Build, by now I have finished a C-130 Hercules at 1/72 scale from the Mexican Air Force and a Mi-25 Hind at 1/48 scale from the Peruvian Air Force, let me some days to put here some pictures... and what about the models from al of your? manuel, muy bien... maybe you should post a general feeler out in the aircraft forum to re-start a new GBs.. but many are in progress, not sure how many you will get in. I would love to join suc a GB ut cant for a few months :(
