Daniel thanks for the offer but I've already placed the order. I'm in the same boat as you with the Tamiya kit decals Dead [xx(]. Oh and BTW I'll post off those Spitfire decals on Monday.

Who is this Kremps character anyway? I've heard Tom talking about Kremps for a while and need filling in on this character.

From what I've picked up so far, she is a 300 pound East german ex-wrestler who likes to build some very obscure aircraft. She is currently in rehab to get off windex (?!!), and is a bit of a bear.

Am I close?

LOL!!! see? obviously you missed the Battle of Britain GB... Nurse Kremps **WAS** the lead nurse at Happy Acres Rest Facility where Jules, Sean and myself reside... (Darren sometimes visits with his sock puppet "Charles the Neurotic")

haha you would have to read the posts to understand... But Kremps holds a special place in our heart.. all 300 pounds of her! she was fired when she was caught skimming money from the recreation fund and is now working the street and doing what she can to earn money....

Jules.... Sean.... I think this is a perfect introduction to her for this GB.. we may have to resume!!! hahah Clown [:o)]

Don't worry Daniel.. she is a product of our demented minds... (which is how we ended up at Happy Acres to begin with!!!) Well.. Tweety had his little "Future" monkey on his back but I heard he is clean now!

Daniel,

I don't know about anybody else, but when I think of Kremps I think of the character of Head Nurse Charlotte Diesel that Cloris Leachman played in the Mel Brooks movie High Anxiety.

edit
Hey Tom, you'd better not say nasty things about Charlie, bad things happen when people aren't nice to him Evil [}:)]Tongue [:P]

Darren, actually where I got the name from was in "One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" with Jack Nicholson.. although she was not unattractive... the name conjures up images of the overweight, old style nursing hat... bulges peaking out of her uniform type nurse though... having worked as a Respiratory Therapist for many years I ran into many of these dinosaurs.... hence the name stuck in real life (we called them that behind their backs)

but your analogy is good too... really fits! I had almost forgot about that movie!

You chaps obviously had too much time on your hands before that GB started. I noticed there was about 700 posts up before the thing even started. I was wondering what you talk about so much, now I know.

It seems all those bad fitting kits and tiny photo-etched patrs have finally made you all insane. Keep up the good work.Thumbs Up [tup]

Morning all-broke out the SBD-2 last night and reviewed the instructions-think I'm gonna need a stronger pair of reading glasses! Should be fun though.

fyi-Questioned Acc. Min. (a few months ago) about the decal sheet having only lap belt decals while the instructions show a shoulder harness. Response (quick & precise) was that shoulder harnesses were not installed on the SBD-2's @ Midway. Reviewed the finished model on the bottom of the box-has shoulder belts. Oh, what's a mother to do.....

Bob - looked around and can't find anything definitive yet... you might want to hop over to http://etoclub.proboards18.com/index.cgi and ask Blackwolf as he has a veritable treasure trove of info on a lot of aircraft! I built mine with them and I am sticking to the story!

Darren - no I don't think bad of Charlie, Although Sean was laughing about the way he dresses yesterday... he said no self respecting sock would be wearing a coat in the middle of summer down there! Then went on to make fun of his nose... I always thought he had a rather striking nose myself!

Ok found a decent read on Midway while on the net last night...

http://www.pacificislandtravel.com/micronesia/about_destin/midway_history1.html

has various mention of a lot of the AC used in there... along with names of pilots and sortie results etc...

Thinking of doing an emergency switch to the A6M2 and let my Typhoon hang while I wait for the ultracast parts... this one looks to be a quick build and although I will probably do it again with some more detail pieces this one is a 'for fun' one t get me out of my modelling slump...

Thad I'll check the reference library when I get home from work tonight and see what I can dig up for you. If I can find anything I'll let you know.

I have the squadron-signal walkaround of the SBD, and it has heaps of interior pics of all the variants. I might be able to scan a few of them if you want (shhh..... Don't tell anyone though).

Here is a gallery of an SBD-3. It's pretty much the same except the rear cockpit might be a bit different from a -2 (because of the twin guns instaed of the single ones mounted in the earlier model). Here it is:

SBD walkaround

hope that helps you.

Daniel-thanks for the post of the walk around on the SBD. Will help me out alot also.

Tom-will follow your lead on the seatbelts-broke down and ordered a set of paintend PE's for this build...just in case. Made a list of resourses to request from the local library-might find something there. Will advise.

Jay... that's right they transferred you to the Pimms Unit before this happened. She and Tweety got in a fight and she started throwing fists at him. Next thing you know she passed out cold and Tweets never layed a hand on her. At the autopsy they determined it was laquer thinner... she'd developed a tolerance to the stuff and seems she pickled herself... right now she is on display at the Texas Medical Center Musuem of Medicine here in Houston. Eerily lifelike!

On the start end date - it already started and it's a bit open ended on ending... I guess when we get tired of it... some are still commited to other builds so we are holding off on an official end date till everyone has a better idea!

Gotta run over to j-aircraft and see if I can find out what color Japanese aircraft were on the interior tonight.. starting it before the Typhoon as parts are still in the mail...

Mate, I'm gonna ignore your advice and ask about the billiard balls. Or do I really want to know? I'm probably gonna end up in the "rest facility" with you after this F-14 tomcat build. I'm slowly starting to go crazy, this academy kit is rather "challenging" (and by challenging, I mean absolute crap).

Bob - I'll see if I still have the links from when I was building my first SBD last yr.. had a lot of them... and yeah, I don't think anyone here is goign to quibble with you if you have shoulder harnesses and they didn't have them in real life... My thought is how scary that must have been going in at about 70 degress hanging on only by a lap belt...

Daniel - you souldn't have went there... Jules gets a little sentimental with the billiard ball then and all... Seems Kremps trained by cracking billiard balls between her knees when she was wrestling...

Bob - thats what I was thinking about when I posted that... imagine how the pilot felt going down... but imagine how the gunner felt pulling out of that dive.. WHILE he was supposed to be protecting the rear.. if I only knew then what I know now about the SBD, I would have asked my uncle a lot more questions... too late of course.. if I had been older I could have asked him about the harnesses myself!!!

And of course I wish I had even met my other great uncle... he died the year before I was born. Career Air Force... flew in the pacific with the USAAC as far as I know in a B-24 as a gunner, sounds like the ventral turret gunner... and if he was where my grandma said (she's still alive) his unit eventually transferred to the B-36... THAT would have been something to talk to him about!!!!

Pingy - Somehow Kremps got word you've been asking about her.. wants you to come visit her in the hospital. She says she always wanted a boy like you and has something for you... Jules... looks like your dreams of the inheritance might be in jeopardy!!! (but who would want her false teeth and choke collar from the war anyway???)

Hmmmm......I wonder what it could be that Kremps has for me...... Before I can visit her, I'll need some directions to get there. I can't wait to see what it is. I'M EXCITED.

OK boys-- I will only post a few pics since this isn't my official choice for this build- but it does tie into this one! I really wanted to take pics of this build on my Eduard Carrier Deck Base, but none of the lame LHS here in my area carry anything close to Deck Blue Sad [:(]...once I get that set up, I may replace these pics with those.

This is Monogram's Devastator done up in the scheme of George Gay- the only surviving member of Torpedo 8 from Hornet after the attacks at Midway.

And lastly a shot from the front showing off the torpedo nose art...

Very nice build Jeeves. Very nice.

Took a few moments last night and washed the components of the SBD-2. With a little luck this weekend, I'll get some primer them and maybe start painting the interior items....maybe.

Tom-ditto. I had two uncles (one in Patton's group-not sure about the other that I would love to talk to today, but alas, too late. Had an ex-girlfriends father who was a B-17 pilot-but no interest at talking about the war and/or plane at the time. And my wife has an uncle (still living) who doesn't want to talk about the war (he was in the Pacific) other than he mentioned that he lost a brother in a B-25 as he was looking at my aircraft collection. A lot of stories...& lessons.. lost.

I guess I am very fortunate in that my uncle who flew the Halifax over Europe wrote a journal of which I have a fuzzy photocopy of. He never wanted to talk about the war either but after the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp) butchered a documentary on the war called the "valour and the horror" (it heavily criticised the bomber command for levelling entire cities in massive air raids) he decided he needed to let people know how it really was and put his journal together. There are enough pictures that I should be able to do his aircraft when Hasegawa releases their Halifax next year as a follow up to their new Lancaster. Wink [;)] (wishfull thinking only folks) My uncle's squadron was in the middle of upgrading to the Lancaster when the war ended. He was certain his unit was going to be shipped to the pacific and the gossip was that it was going to take 3 years to defeat Japan.

Seeing as though we're talking about relatives who fought in the war, I'll tell you about my grand father. He was a tail gunner in a sunderland for the RAAF. Unfortunately, I never met him because he died before I was born. We still have his old log books and uniform and a few photos. I'm thinking of doing a build of his aircraft one day, if someone comes out with a 1/48 sunderland that is.
