Sean, Nice Hs129, Darren looking good with the bf109, Tony, nice looking Martlett and Karl, stunning MS406! I love the weathering. Keep it up guys, I only pop in to this forum every once in a while to see what I am missing. Thinking now, I could have done a beaufighter for this one, A Canadian night fighter Ace (Carl 'moose' Fumerton I believe was with RAF 89sqdn ) flew on malta so I could have done his, oh well. Next time.

Wow! The ms406 looks great! So does the 109! The wildcat looks like ti is coming along well also.

I haven't been doing much modeling lately, because if you took all the homework I had and put it on one of those scales, it would find equilibrium if you put kremps on the other side... Wink [;)]

Karl that MS406 is a real eye catcher and should make a really nice addition to your collection, congratulations.

Tony I'm glad to hear everything is working out on your build and I know that feeling, I've got it myself at the moment, everything is going too well. A disaster has to be imminent.

:::Progress Update:::
Ok after my embarrassing little incident with the airbrush I put the 109 back in the paint shop tonight and finished off the camo. Now I'll let it cure for at least 24 hours before masking it for the white band around the fuselage near the tail.

Hi All,
I've got the uppersurface sprayed on my Wildcat, I'll try to post some pics tonight. It always surprises how grey the blue-grey is, I keep thinking it will be more blue. Anyway, it's a clean job, so I'm still on track to make it by the 15th. There's got to be some problem soon though, its never this smooth.
I'll wait 48, no 36 hours more, then Future/Super Shine.

what a MESS!!!

Karl - looks GREAT!!! that is quite an achievment based on the issues you had with it.. it really does look good!!!

Tweets - the HP-CS gets some of the finest lines allowable with modeling paint there is... there are brushes that do finer but can't handle the pigments the paints we use have... even the HP-CR does some nice fine lines. 1.5 mm off the bat with no real practice!!! I want to primer up the milk jug again and have a go at it as I was MOST impressed!!! And to get consistent with it as well... the trick is the Iwata's have a very slight bevel to the needle... so there is a lot more control at the lower end of trigger pull... a lot easier to get a fix on than my Badgers!!!

Progress Update

I had today off work, which has allowed me to get the post shading complete, a final coat of matt varnish and the masking off the canopy.

I've had to retouch the paint around the canopy in a few places, which will mean touching in with some more matt varnish in a few days as the Gunze arcylics are gloss.

The sliding canopy portion is a very poor fit to the rest of the canopy, it won't even fit in the closed position, but with a little coaxing should sit over the rear of the fixed canopy.

I need to add heavy oil staining to the two panel lines under the nose, as these aircraft leaked oil like nothing on earth.

Just need to finish painting the wheels, and then it's final assembly time this weekend.

Tony it's good to here you're making progress, when do we see some happy snaps?

Sean it's the HP-CS and I figured out what the problem is. I had the air pressure turned down too low to actually blow the thinner out of the brush Big Smile [:D]

. It worked with the larger nozzle but not with the .35mm. I played around some more and have found the minimum pressure the .35mm nozzle needs (yes I'm very embarrassed by this as I sould have known it was the operator not the equipment Tongue [:P]

)
The .35mm nozzle/needle combo is the one that actually comes with the airbrush but I don't use it very often. Mainly I stick to the .5mm nozzle for 95% of the work I do. You can very fine lines with the .35mm say approx 1mm but I've never actually measured them.

Got the drop tanks sprayed without a problem, now it's time to mask the airframe for the uppersurface colour. That is, after a couple of beers with my brother in law, whose birthday it is today. Should get a nice fuzzy edge anyhow !

Karl both of the kits are Tamiya. The Kubel comes with a couple of Luftwaffe figures (a pilot and a driver) which I will do if I have the time.

I changed needle and nozzle in the trusty Iwata to the .35mm combo in preparation for doing the mottling and wouldn't you know it the gods are against me. As I posted in the air brushing forum, I'm getting only air out of the business end of the a/b and bubbles in the paint cup Angry [:(!]

. I couldn't believe it, one of the few times I really need to do fine work and the thing decides to c Censored [censored]

p out on me. Oh well back to the .5mm needle nozzle combo, no problems with this, it's just not quite as fine as I would have preferred so it's harder to do.
Anyway, one wing, the tail planes and the cowing were mottled (before I cramped up) and I'll attack it again tonight.

Yeah Tom these temporary winter scheme's are interesting for modelers and getting it right would be a bit of a challenge, This Eastern front HS 129 appears to carry a standard RLM 70/71 scheme but the 71 seems to have had a white paint crudely applied over the top, there is also small white spots varied in size and randomly painted over the remaining RLM 70....Im not sure of the particular unit but it carries a Blue G and Blue spinners with white spirals..............As far as duplicating this camo job goes i'm not really sure, i think i read in an old FSM magazine that a modeler used either diluted chalk or it could have been pastels into a sludge type of mix and applied it unevenly, after that i think he just used a hard bristled paintbrush and removed it from the parts he thought should show the underlying paint......
I think before i ever try anything like this on an actual build i might have a go at it on the paint hack Thumbs Up [tup]

Jules - actually I got through the mottling on my FW-190, one piece to patch up and I think I might go for the winter whitewash overlay on it... only thing is I am trying to decide what to do it with... I would like to do it with something like a mop at that scale so I can try to get it realistic looking, then fade it and chip it like it's been on awhile... might be a bit before I pick up that one again as I need to think about it a bit... Airbrushing it seems too easy and too even all over...

Rick I really am looking forward to getting this beast off the bench and onto the shelf!

Tom & Bob The camo is the bit I'm most pleased with on this build. So much so I was considering a Hawk 75 in Meske's (sic) markings for the Allied Aces GB. He was the highest scoring French ace of the battle for France. Now is that 'Fringe' or what?

Progress Update

Matt coat went on the 406 yesterday, and I'll be applying post shading to the panels this afternoon. With a bit of luck, I'll have this finished next weekend!

I actually sprayed some future thhrough my airbrush onto plastic today... I was so proud of myself until I noticed the fuselage had gotten a bit of dust on it so now I have to patch it up.... Disapprove [V]

It does feel good to get a little modeling in though!

Darren Is that the Academy kit, that comes with the Kubel?

I built the Kubel a while back, great little model, along with the Kettenkrad, still have the Jeep sitting in the spares box.

Glad you like the camo, I really enjoyed doing it, and it stands out a bit more now I've applied a coat of matt. The 406 is now 'baking' in the airing cupboard, along with a 1/72 Revell 109G10.

:::Progress Update:::
I've been busily painting the last couple of nights and things are coming on pretty well. The only color I have left to add on the 109 is the RLM 80.
The camo is painted using my Mk 1 eyeball and some reference photos as a guide. I figure if they painted it freehand in the desert 63 years ago, so can I.

The Kubel is waiting for a clear coat which will happen at the same time as the 109.

And now some pics from me...

The different colour rudder, and fuselage patches represent the overpainting of the original French markings.

The funny looking marking over the fuselage roundel is a knight's helmet with feather plume, the unit symbol of Group de Chase 1.

Showing off the quasi-RAF camo. This aircraft only had the roundel on one wing, and even there it didn't cover the aileron, hence the cut out. Note radiator extended from beneath the cockpit, and the complete absence of detail within the wheel wells!

Now off to the paint shop for a coat of matt.

Hey guys, I've completed the priming with Light Gull Grey now, and will have to wait 48 hours before I mask for the uppersurface camo. The wheels and undercarriage are done, as is the engine and prop.
Have I told you how much I like Wildcats ?
No, I'd better not start down that road, anyway, this is my fifth.

I like that HS129, I've never been game to really have a go at the squiggle, but I think that's a great job. How do you avoid spatter at the starting point of the airbrush stroke ?
