Ok, here's where it stands now. I'm really not too happy at all by the appearance of the earth. Too much paint, and I painted it too lightly IMHO. Anyways, things left to do:

Couple more small trees to be added

Loose leaves to be added and a bit more work on the shrubs on the road

Try to do something with this damn groundwork. Any suggestions?

Heavy plastel process still left to go onto the building to tone it all down a bit. It's just jumping out way too much right now.

All comments and suggestions welcome.

Sure, Put me in! I was planning on doing a 1:48 b-17g dio, and now I have the excuse to do it!Big Smile [:D]

-Josh

Current Builds: If I were to list everything I have in progress, it'd take way too long! Some notable inclusions:

Hasegawa 1:48 KI-84

Tamiya 1:48 P-51D (in Iwo Jima long-range escort markings)

4 (yes, four) Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1s (1x -1D, 1x -1A, and 2x -1s)

It all depends on your mixture. I make my groundwork out of actual dirt, mixed into mud with water and white glue. The less white glue, and more water I use, the more cracking I'll see.

Vehicles are finished, and I'll get some pics up soon.

Ok its taken me some time to get started, but here's my progress so far. Scratched base and everything. Insulation foam used. Groundwork is finely sifted potting soil. Bridge (kinda out of he picture here) is made from balsa and coffee stirring sticks. Academy M-18 and Tamiya cckw. THe ruined house is an italeri item, with a plaster foundation and scratched rubble. You can't see the water bed very well, but it will be filled using Woodland scenics realistic water. FIgures are part of the Tamiya dragon wagon crew, some Italeri Truck crew, and two Verlinden figure sets.

Thanks Jimmy,

I'm glad the layout looks OK, for a while I was wondering if it would work or not. Thanks fro commenting on the Sherman, I normally build aircraft so I'm pleased that you like it.

Darren.

the dio looks great.  I like the layout you used, with the positioning of the Sherman and the troops.  The Sherman looks great too by the way.

Hi Everyone,
here it is. Apart from some odds and ends its finally done. Its Tamiya's Sherman built straight from the box on a base of my making. Its supposed to depict a scene from the Ardennes. I'm not a regular dio armor/dio builder so if you see something not quite right feel free to tear into me-at least that way I'll know better next time! I enjoyed this project very much and plans are underway for another dio as I write. I'm now hooked on diorama building!
Please let me know what you think good or bad...........

Darren.

Update:
Hi everyone, I've spent the evening adding stowage and weathering my M4. I have sealed everything in with a matt coat and started painting the faces on my figures(something I do not do well!) I should be finished soon if all goes well. I have a friend visiting tomorrow to see how I'm doing. If he does'nt laugh I'll post some pics of what I've done.

See you later,

Darren.

Finished the subassemblies on the deuce and the M-18, and primed them both. Have been throwing some ideas around for the layout, as I want to include several features in this dio that I have not attempted before. It will be a rest-stop scene with a nearly empty deuce truck parked close to the M-18. Crews will be in a leisurely position, some offloadhing equipmen, some just talking, others doing whatever. The scene is set in the country side somewhere, near a ruined farmhouse and a bridge crossing a shallow creek. Hope to get some work done on it this weekend.

Quick update-I've finished the base and added the slush to the tank tracks, its looking well weathered now. Next will be the stowage and figures, these need detail painting and when the "little bits" are added to the tank I should be just about done.

Progress- went to my local barber shop to do some "research" and a haircut Big Smile [:D] (cuz im making one of the shops on the bottom floor of the building into a barber shop) found out exactly how a barber shop seat looks along with other things i could put into a barber shop... so i built a chair (when you really look at it, you see its a really complicated chair) finnished another chair, along with a newspaper stand, and some other furniture...so thats done...looks really cool, kinda feel bad now that i have to put rubble on top of it (cuz its right under a big hole in the building where a bomb hit)

thats all for now (and probably for awhile because of skool startin tommorrow) -DJ

OK, I have changed the trees to something that vaugely resembles pines. When I finish the snow, I'll post some more pics.

Heh! heh! :)

I showed my base to a pal and his first words were "the trees are wrong-you need pines!"He has some spare ones that he is going to donate to me. I am at work this week so the new trees will not get done for a while-at least it should look better when its done. The figures are ready to paint and I need to finish the decals on the tank. All on my "to do" list when I get my next day off work.

See you guys later,

Darren.

tango- well you couold always say that a pillow factory blew up in the area of this action.....Big Smile [:D]

not much progress here, but none the less, its progress.....i built the stowage bins (for good now) using balsa, i will put putty on it so it doesnt look like wood but metal, and then i could finnally get out of the interior!! now that i found alittle more refrence on the interior, (and becuz i couldnt find any kits for the  hanomag interior)  i was planning on doing the putty today, but i felt lazy, so i just watched black hawk down and drew portraits of larry and shemp (from the three stooges( yea i know random))

-merry x-mas everyone, hope santas good to you! (i still believe)- DJ

Thanks John, I was going to go with pines, but I liked these better, now you mention it, pines make sense. However, I shall persevere with the trees I already have. I'll guess I'll be using a lot of artistic licence here!

Looking good tango. Only ting I want to say is about the trees. They still have their leaves on and they dont look like pine trees. I suggest either replacing them with some pine trees or some twigs from the yard to simulate leafless trees.

If you do decide to keep these trees, be sure to cover up the seam mark where the tree connects to the stump.

Thanks DJ, yes I will add figures as well. I have just put them together. I am a very poor figure painter, so I will have to take my time if I want them to look anything like people!
I've also spent a lot of time painting stowage and equipment to go on the tank. I'm really enjoying this project, I hope it turns out the way I imagine it to look.

As promised, here are some pics of my "progress" so far. I put the winter camo on the tank this morning, leaving space for its markings then put a gloss coat over the whole thing. The base has had a little more snow added and I've put down some tank tracks in the snow. This will be made to look like slush/dirty snow later on. I'll post pics of this bit later when I've finished the messy snow.
So how am I doing? Let me know!

Regards,

Darren.

Hello Everyone,

I have just started my dio today and thought I'd drop by and say "Hi" I usually build aircraft, however this dio will feature some armor in the form of a winter camo sherman driving through a snowy forest.
I'm using the 1/35th Tamiya sherman, it features winter markings and comes with figures/accessories, so I'll build it OOB.
Today, I built/painted the tank and made a start on the base, I've used some scenic trees and woodland scenics snow for the first time, and after lots of learning curve mistakes, I think I've made some progress. At least I think it looks like a little bit of forest! I'll post pics tomorrow and you guys can see how I'm doing.

See you later,

Darren.

Started on the Tamiya 2 1/2 truck this weekend. I just ordered an Italeri M32 recovery vehicle, so I'm wondering whether to use this one instead of the M-18. I'll have to wait and see...
