Hello all

I have been off building for past 6 weeks because of exams, but have the RC750 Honda nearly finished and am doing a couple of the 1980's GP bikes using a Dexter and Ragged Edge sheets, I am also tired of RCV's but still buy them by the ton since I love models

I am keen on a new build but like the others I really like to learn how some of you get your builds right it is what I find makes the GB interesting ie learning new tricks

Hopefully I can post some progress in the next couple of weeks

I'm tired of the RCV:s as well and don't think they are up close on my list of kits to do. Probably wll get my hands on a few M1:s as I haven't done a single one yet.

Don't know about the smileys Shayne, they seem to have vanished.

Would be keen for that, But getting sick of the RCV , even though would get it as it is a new??? RCV.Another

vote would be for the YZR  as you could do a few teams version of it. Have had one sitting here just begging to be done .

PS where are those smileys gone ?

Regarding the Group Builds I think one has to think about what they want to accomplish with a GB. I want something more than just showing images. I want to evolve and learn tricks from you guys. No problem with slow builders as I am one myself, but to get interested in another GB I think I want people to share more regarding their techniques and I'd rather see more narrow builds than the wider scopes that are getting more and more common.

I couldn't agree more.  I've packed everything away and have taken an extended brake from building.  It feels like I hit a rut where my builds were not getting any better.  I could never get the shine on the fairings that many of you produce, as well as getting clean paint to lay down with the smaller parts.  I could never figure out if it was the paint choice, the equipment used or a bad technique (sp?).

What I think would be great to see is a one bike build.  Everyone buys and constructs the same exact bike, and compare details on how they build it.  Have all of the accesories the same brand and scale (such as CF poto etch etc).  I'm sure there would be at least one online vendor who would give a discount if everyone bought all the kits and accesories from them.  I think maybe this way the more experienced builders can help out the not so experienced.

Just my couple o pennies :)

Yea, this GB kinda went downhill pretty quick.  I will take half of the blame for that.  My new engineering job is half killing me with all those reference books.  To repent, I just made the badge for the GB.  Maybe more people will finally start up their builds with this incentive eh?

Was trying to get the 06 to look like wheels... came out looking halfassed instead.

Don't think everyone left , I'm aways lurking around somewhere + I think everyone else is just as slow a builder as me .

Was thinking of starting a new group build , which would be a never ending one as have quite a few racing bike's and conversions I would like to do and finding hard to keep track of the 2 group builds here.

So would be basically a motorbike group build with anyone can join at any time .(though not those damn choppers can't stand them .(was going to stick a smiley here but they have dissappered ??????)

Will put a post on moto gp build and if anyone still hanging around  will start it up?????

Hi guys! Finished my work in this GB today! I had some REALLY big troubles attaching the lower cowls to the top but I sorted it out eventially. It doesn't look 100% though...

Here are some shots although they are a tad to light and some of them a bit out of focus. I'll post new ones soon, I've got plans to take this mother to my friends' studio for some quality pictures.

Hope you all like it!

Ok, so it's time to start the assembly and get a move on with this build. Today I'll give you pics of the finished engine and swing arm assembly and tomorrow I'll hopefully post picture of the naked bike fully assembled.

What's new on the engine? I've added throttle cables. These would go into a box underneith the tank on the real bike but that won't fit so I've stuck them away at the clutch cover. On the left side you can spot my most expensive piece of plastic. I had to buy a new mold tree to get the sprocket cover that I've misplaced...10 USD plus shipping... Lucky I needed some primer... I sprayed it Alclad II Jet Exhaust, covered it partly with some SMS CF and put some Model Factory Hiro rivets where there was originaly molded in ones.

Looking through a R1 service manual I found loads of extras that I would have made if I had the manual when I began the build. Now I'll stick to an extra radiator hose on the left side and to rebuild the clutch (not visible here).

I finally assembled the rear swing arm and I think it turned out just dandy! Caliper got some rivets installed on the top side and I then glued the brake disc and caliper in place on the rimb using super glue. To get the right fit with the tire I had to make a spacer out of styrene rod. Looking at the right side you can see that I've drilled the screw head down into the rimb and I will later cover it with a plastic bolt.

The fender is painted Metallic Grey (same as the tank) and then I added some CF in the middle. I pinned it down with some rivets.
Brake line is .6 mm fishing line painted gun metal.
Chain guard got some phillips head bolts as fastners.

Hope you all like it.

Hi Shayne

The problem I had with the decals is they simply would not stick, had little if any adhesive.  Banged Head [banghead]  The first set came of in the washing process while I was preparing parts for clear coat. Sad [:(]   The next set “blew” of the cowlings when I tried the clear coat    Sigh [sigh]     so finally with the advice from Decalman I used another sheet of decals and put a little diluted white glue under each decal and that did the trick,   Smile [:)]     went through five sets of decals though. Supplier Ragged Edge was fantastic supplying spare sheets and helping me solve the problem, I think I just had some bad luck with the sheets, since other have had no problems  Big Smile [:D]

I am satisfied with the end result, just took a while to get there though

More updates. I'm finally done painting the exhaust system. Or atleast very close to it. I have a few scratches near the right muffler to fix and some joints to paint where the front pipes meats the EXUP. I will also add some washers to the muffler brackets.
I finally fell for some Termignoni decals from the Dexter Models sheet wich seem to have a very high quality.

Hi Guys, you are not alone. I have had some troubles with the Ducati 916 '98 Senna decals and have finally gots them to stick on the parts so hopefully I will seal them with a clear coat this week-end then I will post pictures of the finished bike.

The RC 750 Honda is stuck I had some problems with the Gold pinstrips on the body parts so have ordered some new declas from HLJ, they are also on the way so should have pictures posted soon

I'll keep on going. Last chance for the next couple of weeks to get something done here.

Glued the rear damper into the swing arm and test fitted the chain and chain guard. Chain isn't detailed yet, just painted Pale gold and XF-56 Metallic grey. Chain guard will get some washers added.

I also put the front fork together with the front wheel. You can see the small scratch built mountings for the fender. Fork legs are painted, yes Alclad II Pale gold, and the sliding parts are from a Museum Collection kit that I wasted the other year. They are made of turned brass. Lower ends of the forks are to be detailed further and Brembo markings on the calipers will be painted black.

Hope you like it.

Fitted the scratch built pipes into the EXUP today. The styrene rods fit beautifulli in the mufflers but as expected it was harder to get them into the EXUP. I heated and bent the pipes and then glued them in place with super glue. After curing I put on some putty whilst still test fitted on the bike. Hopefully I'll get a hard mount as it will have to manage the heavy load. My next fear is that it will be hard to fit the system after painting as it now is in one piece...will see about that one. Here's two pics of the EXUP connection.

On to the exhaust system...  This is a task I've pushed in front of me during the whole build as it will be tricky to fit the scratch built pipes into the EXUP with the right angle. Photo below shows where I started out. I've been struggling to get the frontmost one in place and did so until I cut too much plastic away and the pipe went too short :banghead:. Well, well, glued a small piece at the end and hopefully it will do fine tomorrow. The other pipe will be trickier as it has a more complex way to the EXUP. It is hard to meassure the angle and hold that one in my head while holding the plastic rod over the candle. I've tried a few ways to sort it and think I'm on my way. Hardest part will probably be to clean up the area around the EXUP and to fit the hole system at ones when done.

Well, I wouldn't say pink Shayne but I aree upon it beeing on the light side. I've decided to make it a more darker brown color as most of the bike has really deep colors.

Seat got painted the other day. What do you think? Too light?

I also started adding mesh hose for the radiator and some red throttle lines from the cylinder heads. I'm thinking of adding some sort of box for the lines to take care of valve timing and such. Perhaps a new battery as well.

Thanks for your comments Ryan! Nice to know the group build is still alive ;-) I'm aware of the fact that the frame needs some cleaning up. Will take care of that before I mont the engine.

Holy cow, you are going all out with this one.  I especially like the smoked headlamps and the extra bolts you added, including those 4 for the mirrors inside the cowling.  Are you going to touch up the area between the gold and black frames a lil though?  it seems like your masking got seeped through a bit.  also the CF decal on that swingarm/chain/watever guard on the portside seems to have a bit extra in the front tip, unless it's designed that way... in which case, proves i am just no good of a CF person =P.  that is ALL the nickpick i can possibly find though cuz it's just such a beautiful job so far.

Did quite a bit of work today but most smaller details that won't be visible until further ahead in the WIP. What I'm about to show are the painted frame and swing arm. I chose to do both in flat black. I've used Tamiya laquer spray, wich I emptied from the can and sprayed through air brush. I did the Alclad gold and CF on the frame first, masked off and then sprayed the black. I think the filling of the frame fell out very good although it was a real pain to get it evened out as the shape of the frame is quite complex.

I've added some washers and a few rivets, none of wich is very visible in these photos.

Swing arm has got some brake line fastners wich I made out of hex rod and cut in shape. Hole shabang is then painted flat black. I was going for full CF on the mud guard but I've stripped the paint and will do it metallic grey with some CF areas.

Using my two days off to make some progress.

I've finished off the top cowl. I painted the head light glass clear yellow and the wind screen with smoke. Had to put a lot of smoke to make a clear finish. This also made the paint run quite badly leaving me with a small dot in the middle of the screen where there's no paint. Not that visible though.
Mirrors are painted black and Alclad gold and the black areas are covered with Scale motorsport CF decals. Molded in rivets are sanded and Model Factory Hiro rivets installed. Inside of the cowling was supposed to get CF treatment but I was satisfied with flat black. I put two washers on the inside to recreate mirror fittings. Enjoy.

The lower cowl and side cowls come in one piece. On the front side of the lower cowl there is a V-shape. I've painted this one Alclad gold and installed Studio 27 mesh from the inside. Side cowls are cut on an earlier stage. Inside is painted flat black and the panel line is painted with a Gundam marker.
Sorry for the bad lighting.

Front fender is painted flat black on the inside. Two Model Factory Hiro rivets installed on each side. If you missed out on it earlier on this fender comes from a GP500 Yamaha YZR.

I testfitted the seat and tank cowls on the frame with engine installed. Frame is so far painted Alclad gold, white parts will be flat black.

Best regards
Joel

Hi Ryan
It's not the final exhaust pipe you see on the pictures. That is just a piece of scrap wood that I used when painting the muffler. Hence the golden color.

Hehe, summer in Jersey is just too hot.  Actually I had been working on a lot of warhammer 40k miniatures that I left all my other modeling work aside, since I am also doing a lot of painting for a bunch of kids for free.  It's for the medusa V summer campaign world wide.  I will get back to my cbr soon as that concludes.  As for the other participants...hmm... time to start some email stalkings.

Can't be summer vacation for all of you, can it? We've had such a warm summer here, leaving me with zero tolerance for model building. As I got some days free now I'll try and get somewhere on my R1. I nearly finished the top and lower cowls today. Hopefully you'll get some pics in the morning.

So, it's time for a minor update, the finished mufflers. These are the stages they went through.

1. Glued pieces together, cut hangers.
2. Sanded down the molded in rivets and drilled holes with .5 mm drill bit
3. Puttied, sanded, putted, sanded...
4. Painted gloss black enamel
5. Put on some SMS carbon fiber decals.
6. Painted whole shabang with Modelers' Super Clear
7. Masked off the CF area and painted the end parts Alclad II Pale gold
8. Inserted Model Factory Hiro aluminum rivets in the pre drilled holes.

The result are as follows, I personally think they turned out great.

Hello Joel

Thanks for compliments, I love bikes so have tons of patience, but I only post the cool bikes a few still end up in the spares box. Big Smile [:D]  The rim colour is Tamiya white Surface Primer and then two coats of Tamiya TS49 Bright Red.

Yann

We don’t get Alclad in Africa so all my models are sprayed with Tamiya TS spray paints (from an airbrush not from the rattle can) or Tamiya enamel paints. I have gotten used to using Tamiya paints. I use Tamiya TS 30 Silver Leaf for most of my "shiny parts" as the finish is really good and the paint is very forgiving in that it dries to a nice shiny silver.Smile [:)]

Ok, so it's time for another larger update on my pimping project.

Engine is slowly comming together. I've painted the carburators with Alclad II Jet Exhaust, masked them off and painted details semi-gloss black and Alclad II Pale Gold. I hotted the thing up by adding some CF to the oil filter and painting the start engine Pale Gold and metallic red. I think especially the red made a stand out once installed.

I went about some CF-ing as well (hmm new word...) As it's a pimped ride, you've got to have CF. Preferably lots... My first thought was actually a full CF bike but that's way too far from my league. I decided to lift some of the parts instead. Here are pictures of one of the side cowlings together with a plate that goes between the top and side cowls. Quite a crappy image...

Next was the head light housing and that was quite fun. Took some time but I think I got more out of it than I invested. All CF parts has been painted with Tamiya Smoke and then Tamiya clear. As the acrylic paint is slow drying I made the mistake to mask off the headlights too quick for the Alclad Pale Gold treatment. This left me with some dull areas on top but I will fix that later.

Last but not least as they will be very visible on the finished project, are the rear view mirrors. These were pretty tricky and I'm not fully satisfied with the result but this is done on the first try.

I also finished off the rear damper set up. It's painted Alclad II Pale Gold and Jet Exhaust (what else??) and the spring is cowling color, Mica Red. I've added some Scale Motorsport Washers.

Last but not least (as I now you guys just want the shiny parts :nono: ) I did some progress with the cowlings. I've painted all cowling parts except the tank wit Tamiya (TS-39??) Mica Red, and the tank with Tamiya Metallic Grey. I had an incident with the side/lower cowls so they are lagging a few coats of clear and I haven't taken any pictures of those just yet. So far all cowlings has got Tamiya Primer, followed by 1 mist and 2 wet coats of paint and finally 1 mist and 4 wet coats of Modelers' "Super Clear" (an absolute favourite of mine). I'll think about adding some decals and go for a gentle sand/polish and then finish off with a couple of more clear coats.
I think the Red/Grey combo turned out very well, and I'm so far very pleased with the result. I would like to have myself a dust free area to spray in. Bloody hell those cowls attract lint and dust particles... Well well, here we go.

Bye for now and thanks for looking. Please feel free to comment, good or bad or just some crazy ideas that I should put into the project?

best regards
Joel

Time for a larger update with some paint and finished parts!!

On the tire issue I decided to go with the Ducati tyres as they look most agressive among the three sets I mentioned. They will look like this.

Engine's starting to come together. I decided to paint the block flat black like on the more recent R1:s. Other parts of the engine will are so far painted Alclad II Pale gold and Jet Exhaust. There are of coarse more parts to come, I will do some black and some CF. Parts are just glued in place, they will need a wash.

I finished off the work on the brake discs. They have been a real hazzle but they turned out ok. I didn't get them cleaned up to the degree I wanted them but they started to fall a part so I put the Xacto away... I sanded down all rivets and washers and replaced them with Model Factory Hiro rivets and Scale Motorsport washers. As the rivets has quite a long pin I filed them down on the back with a modelling file.
Here are the front discs:

and here is the rear:

Stopped sanding the cowls and went for the primer a couple of days ago. Today I sprayed the parts that will be Metallic Red with some TS-17 to give them a silver base. I think the Red will look better that way.

Finally for today, the swing has reached its final shape, a lot of work with epoxy putty and Tamiya putty and between those sanding sanding sanding. Now I will prime it and paint it flat black together with the frame.

Hope you like it.

You were right about not stripping the chrome plating. It looks really good. Must be a bit tricky to get all that shiny stuff in place without a lot of 1/1 fingerprints... Is it just me that never found this bike to look like a 1000 cc one?? The chassis, tank and seat could pass for a 125 in my book..

I finished my Virago save some touch-up painting on the nuts and bolts. Here's the pics!

I want to do a couple of airplanes next, maybe if I get the winged thing craving out of the way with enough time left in this group build I'll pull another bike out of the stash. I have the Tamiya Kawasaki ZX-12 that I'd like to put together.

My thanks to Ryan for organizing this group build!

loocking good Andrew! That engine surely looks hell of a lot cleaner than the one I once put in my 916 kits. Awesome job you are doing, keep it up.

Here's my latest progress on the R1.

I painted the R1 rims Tamiya TS-14 Black and let them cure. I then masked off all of the outer parts and left only the center and spokes to be painted with Alclad II pale gold. This is how they looked masked off

and this is how it turned out when the masking tape was removed

Engine's starting to come together but the airbox is getting me a headache. Hopefully I can show some engine pics later this week.

Hello Joel

I am still here and "kicking" writing exams this last couple of weeks, so been a bit tied up. Have completed the chassis and basis build of Senna 916 Ducati and about 50% with Honda RC30 750. Will post some pictures ASAP but will be in Angola next week Wink [;)]

Had some problems with the Senna decals they "silvered" quite badly so not quite sure what to do now? Sad [:(]

Hi guys.

I've run into some "problems" and I need your help to figure out how to fix it. As I made a mono swing for the R1 I can't use the race stand. I don't want to use the side stand either as it is ugly and not to trust worthy. I figure I have to re build the race stand in some way and so far I have thought in the direction of the ducati stand wich has some pin running into the center of the wheel. It's not possible to use that exact stand as I will fit the wheel differently than on the 916 but how about something similar? Could I drill a hole in the swing and use that to insert the stand...?? Or would that just look too fruity?

I've got hooked on the scratch building...I started making an airbox yesterday. Man, I'll never get this sucker finished...

Posted by Dave DeLang on Monday, May 22, 2006 7:48 AM

I think I'm about 75% done. All the painting bar some touch-up are done. Frame, engine and rear wheel are all together. The fork is next and then all that is left is details.

There is a whole poop-pile of chrome on this chopper wannabe so there is a whole poop-pile and a half of sprue attachment points to mar it. I didn't want to re-chrome the whole thing or strip and Alclad as that just isn't as shiny as chrome plating. What I did was try to trim the sprue attachments as smoothly as possible without taking off any more plating. Then I daubed a little clear gloss enamel on the spot and let it dry for a while. After it was tacky, I took a cotton swab and applied SNJ aluminum powder to the spot and buffed it with the clean side of the cotton swab. That didn't look too bad. Since Tamiya was pretty good about placing the sprue attachments at the bottom or backside of parts I think it will do. There is still a seam on each muffler but oh-well. Here's the pictures as of last night.

Hi Shayne

Well that GP5 is certainly one powerful and very rare Ducati and I can only imagine what the price tag must be certainly more than you or I could afford, Bill Gates maybe? Shock [:O]  I think I will stick to the 1:12 scale version for now it is more economical and certainly safer Whistling [:-^]

I've finally started my Yamaha Virago. The frame, engine, tank, side covers and other random parts are painted. There's a lot of detail painting in this kit.

Some of the chrome is painted with clear yellow to make it look gold. I've done a first coat on all of that but I think it will need at least one more. I'll take some pictures over the weekend.

So, things are starting to happen around here. More progress in two days than I've made in six months...

Today I started working on the new swing arm. I've decided to make it a mono swing as it gives the bike a more sporty look. I've cut the right side arm off the old R1 swing. After that I've grinded the right side of the swing just inside the foot peg carrier to make room for the new seat pipes.
I've added some epoxy putty to the cut off edges and will start shaping that as soon as it has dried.

As said earlier I will be using the seat mufflers from the Ducati 916 kit. That leaves me with the job to make new exhaust pipes and to make them fit into the exup of the R1 system. I've used styrene rod with a 3,5 mm diameter. That dimension looks quite alright on the bike and fits like a dream into the mufflers.
I made a dummy out of wire for the first pipe, heated the rod over a candle and formed it after the dummy. It took two runs to make it look good. Going at the second pipe I just followed the curves of the first one making it a lot easier.

This is how it looks with the pipes fitted into the frame.

I still have to fit the ends into the exup but I think that's going to be a minor problem. A bigger one is to hang the whole system so that it doesn't tilt. Any ideas.

best regards

Well, as I don't do much progress I thought I atleast put the parts together to give you all an idea of what I'm trying to acomplish. Here are some mock up photos of the R1 Tuner so far.

I'm working on the swing arm to give it a better appearance and I'm trying to make the new exhaust pipes wich workes quite well. Yesterday I got the idea to use some colored CF on the mufflers...aren't there a red weave pattern from s27 or Renaissance...?

I used the upper and lower triples from the Ducati Desmo.  In order to get the lowers to fit into the frame I had to do a little chopping to the round connector peice.  After I fitted that I wanted to find a way to use the steering damper that comes with the Desmo and find a way to fit it.  It looks like I will have to chop the connection link off of the Desmo's gas tank and find a way to "weld" it to the NSR's tank (I'm VERY open to suggestions on this).  The biggest problem I am having is the spacers for the stock front wheel is shorter than that of the Ducs.  I need to find a way to make it fit more snug.  I didn't want to use the Ducati's Marchensi wheels since it would look really funy having a 10 spoke front wheel and a 5 spoke rear.  I plan on using the Ducati's front fender, since it will match right up to the forks.

Any suggestions are GREATLY welcome since this will be my first "scratch" (if we can call it that) build.

Thanks,
Erik

As for my progress, I actually chopped half the body cowling off of a ducati 900 mike hailwood replica (900MHR) two nights ago at like 4am in attempt to somewhat get the bike close to the look of a 900SS, only to realize just now that it just wouldn't look right even with my plan to change the rear piece and the seat and the additional turn signals.  The supersport half fairing is simply different from the top half of the MHR.  Being that it's only a 13 dollar kit anyhow I will just go nuts with it and make up my own bike, oh well.  Will post some pictures this weekend.

Shayne, I spy a desmo and the fairings of your unfinished KR500 in the background.

Shayne: Nice to see some progress on that monster. Locks like a handfull with that damper... keep it comming, with your skill you'll manage it.

Wolfpac: get that vise and you'll be able to make those extra details on your bikes. It's not only the disc rotors, when you get that done you'll start looking at PE rivets... CF work looks good!

Damn nice build Andrew!!!

I started working on the Honda NR this past weekend.  I'm working on doing a little conversion for it.  I took the Ohlins front fork set of the Ducati Desmo and will be using it, along with the triples and controls.  I need to find a way to get some spacers in there since the stock wheels are too small (any suggestions?).  I also need to cut out the front portion of the gas tank to allow the damper to fit as well, along with pasting on the damper mounting joint to the tank.  I CF'ed the undertail using Scale Motorsports 1/20 CF sheet.  Turned out okay, still needs some trimming though.  I'll post some pics tonight.

If you love your bike let it go. If it comes back to you, you've highsided. http://public.fotki.com/luke76/

So, how's it going for everyone?? I'm back from the States since saturday and trying to cope with jet lag... I have to do an essay about the trip before I can start getting some work done on the R1.

Shayne, they do have their 1/6 beasts which sure cost 2 to 3 times more than those 1/9 Italeri kits.  But that's to the detail level of having working suspension and all.  I got myself 2 of them newer Honda monkey and gorilla mini bikes recently and boy they are cool as hell.  I wonder why they kinda just stopped releasing them after a while.  It'd be pretty cool to have a 1/6 RC211V on the displayshelf and well worth the probable 300 bucks they are gonna charge us eh???
Archangel-yeh I just got the Honda CB750 racer 1/6,and can't wait to build it,though I wish Suzuki or another marque would win a race in moto gp this year ,it seems the only way the big T will make another model other than Honda or the YamBig Smile [:D]

I see.  yea that kinda does suck a lot.  I can feel your pain after ruining my nsr500 after clear coating.  I have yet to get back to it.

Archangel it was not the tail pipe that split but the tail piece Dead [xx(] I have sprayed and decaled all the body parts and was polishing the final clear cote when the tail piece split leaving me with a real mess, Sad [:(] Just think of glue, sanding and touch up with the decals literally millimetres away - ouch! The missus says I should order the spares body parts and decal sheet from HLJ Big Smile [:D] so I may do that in the near future when I have another spares order but for now concentrating on the Honda CX500 as that is nearing completion.

you scrapped the whole bike because of the split tail pipe??!  sounds more like a conversion project for a 4-1 header and bigger muffler.

Honda 400F: Scrapped Banged Head [banghead] since the tail piece split during the final polishing stage Dunce [D)] so I have acquired a whole bunch of spare parts. Next time round I will have to reinforce the tailpiece to prevent that from happening again!Ashamed [*^_^*]

Honda CX500 Turbo: Progressing reasonably well but masking the cowling for all the grills was a mission, hope no decals peel of after painting Whistling [:-^]

Living in Africa we do not get too many of the paint products for aluminum finishes here or if they are available they are very expensive Dead [xx(]. I use bare metal foil and have found it to be quite successful especially for exhausts like on the Honda 400F and Honda 750 F where I used the chrome foil and it turned out OK Wink [;)]. The preparation of the parts is critical as any flaw or seam will show through the foil and you do need to be patient and apply the foil carefully it is very thin Wink [;)].

The gold and black BMF are great for the stanchions of the front forks producing quite a realistic effect.

Here are some photos of the Honda 400F. The rear cans of the exhaust are covered in foil but judge the results for yourself . I will spray the foil with a clear coat next time as it appears that with time the foil oxidizes and becomes slightly dull Whistling [:-^]

wow, the decals ARE in nice condition.  how come some of those open box ones I got from ebay has crapped out decals??!!

as for the ducati kits, yea i ended up getting the super sport 900 and the NCR on ebay for like 40 shipped... each...  (@#$%@$%@)  which is insane of a price tag when the reissued MHR was 13 bucks...  it's just not right.

I have never quite figured out why Tamiya discontinue a kit for up to 20 years. I have been looking for the Ducati 900 NCR but have never even see the kit. Shock [:O] I fortunately have a Ducati 900ss but would love to build a couple for my “built collection”. Maybe with all the new Ducati GP4’s Tamiya will reissue some of the older Ducati kits?  Hope so Mr. Tamiya as I would buy a couple of each of the older Ducati kits (except 900MHR) Big Smile [:D]

Progress photos on Honda CX500 Turbo. The kit is one I bought 18 years ago so I hope the decals are sill OK?Wink [;)]

Alrite alrite I couldn't wait for another weekend to start on them...  got some minor work done today while watching movies off of the PC the whole time.  Mostly just filling body cowlings and primered them for both the CBR and the katana.  Still needs some touch up but considering my past experience they came out ...okay.  Drilled out the cleaning holes for the CBR's brake discs as well.  I think I made the holes too big...  and still got a bit of thinning work to do for them.

as for the combiner in the background... that's from my narrow gauge bachmann 2-6-0 Mogul for colorado & southern.  took it out for Xmas but the girlfriend managed to break the door glasses off...

Alrite, guess it's time I finally order alclad chrome then.  I only have their aluminum, polished aluminum, and steel since that's all my LHS had.

What about snj's aluminum with their polishing powder?  Well they are kinda out of business now but the only thing that didn't let me get it is their website says it shouldn't be used with putty.

Like Joel said, Alclad II looks very nice. Another option would be carbon fiber decals and make it look like an aftermarket pipe. I did that on a Ducati's cans and it looked pretty nice. I did the pipes in regular MM metalizers since they didn't have to be so chrome-like because I weathered them a little to make them appear heat stained.

I would stripp the chrome plating with oven cleaner and then wash the parts properly. Then glue and start your putty/sand job to get the seam to disappear. Prime the muffler, spray with tamiya black enamel and then coat it with Alclad II chrome or aluminum. On larger surfaces like this I wouldn't recommend using Bare Metal Foil.

Yea you can post your progress pictures in this thread or some new thread if you want.  I didn't make it a big requirement that you have to have progress pictures as long as you share the final results, but I sure find a GB more fun and well updated when people share them.

As far as my knowlege for race bikes, which is very little, from the pictures I have seen, the interior of the cowlings have a matt black finish.  I don't know if it's left bare CF or not since Tamiya would also have otherwise called out their favorite semi-gloss black for it but they instead noted flat black.  I have only played around with two bikes in real life that my uncle had (yea they don't have cowlings...).  If I remember clearly looking down the little front cowling of the GSX1100S it was black.

I'm using the Yamaha as practice because I don't care so much if I bugger it up, not because I thought it was easy. I may re-do the chrome with Alclad, I'll have to take a look at where the seam lines and sprue attachments are.

What's the procedure with group builds here in FSMland? Should all the posts for progress reports be in this thread?

edit: one more question not specifically on this group build but motorcycle kits in general. How do most folks handle the inside of fairings? Paint them the same as the outside? Semigloss black with overspray of the finish color? (that's how my two 1/1 bikes are: Honda VFR800i and Honda PC800)

Are race bike fairings painted inside or are they carbon fiber pattern or something?

thanks!!

edit#2: Joel, nice work! I like it!

Hmm, don't know if I know how they look, do you happen to have a picture or could you find one matching them. Perhaps that could be interesting.

Here's what I've acomplished today. I've cut the brake discs to represent wave style discs. I've reworked both front and rear discs with knife and drills and sanded down the washers and rivets to replace them with PE ones. As you can see there is some cleaning up to do...

Glued the cut swing arm parts together so that I can start reworking them with putty.

Looking sharp.  I like the vents in the tail, I think it will make the bike stand out.  If you are interested I have a set of Marchensi wheels from a failed RC build, I could drop those in the mail if you like.

Ok, so I'll be the first one posting pictures in this thread, better keep up now ladies and gentlemen Big Smile [:D]

I'll start with an introduction of this project wich will be my largest (first??) bash/scratch job ever.
I'm starting out with two Tamiya boxes, the Yamaha R1 and the Ducati 916 but as you will notice I will only use minor parts from teh 916. The kit is getting a mono swing arm so my first thought was to steal that right out of the Duc box, but when was life so simple?? The Ducati swing is too short as the R1 swing fits in the frame a bit more forward. Have to redo the existing one instead... Chain and rear brake system will be from the Ducati.

Thought was of coarse to use the beautiful wheels from the Ducati but as I have to use the R1 swing I'll go with R1 wheels as well. They will get the rimbs in black and spokes in gold. I'm thinking of wheather to use the tyres from the R1 or from the Duc or even from a Suzuki Hayabuza X1...hmm
Brake discs will be altered to wave style and the front forks will get brake calipers from an YZR500 GP bike, brembo ones for that extra grip Tongue [:P] So far I've just cut the R1 and YZR forks. They will be joined with sliding parts made out of machined brass that I've stolen from a GP after market kit.

I will do seat pipes. This will, together with the swing arm, probably be the most time consuming part of the build. Muffler cans comes from the Duc but they will get slightly altered and the pipes will be scratch built out of plastic beam. I'll use the R1 pipes between the engine and the exup.

Frame will be flat black with minor modifications. I'll remove passanger foot pegs and install some crasch pucks. I've just started filling it with putty. In this pictures you also see the cut swing arm parts.

Cowlings has undergone a larger modification and are still not finished. Seat cowl is built as single rider version and together with the tank and the front fender it will have ventilation holes with mesh installed from the back.

Side cowlings are cut to recreate a more modern style but has to undergo more sanding to look really good. Undertray will not be used and neither will the turn signals. I've filled the holes in the side cowlings.

Front fender is swapped, I'll use a more aggressive GP one. Original fender to the right...

Any comments?
Best regards
Joel

ps. anyone want to know what color it will be? I was drewling over some Cobra Colors but as I'm in Sweden that's a no go. I'll set for some Tamiya Metallic red over Silver leaf. Hope it turnes out well.

nope.  the 900SS from Tamiya had only top half of the cowling in a slightly different design.  it curves under the handle bars.  the cowling behind the seat is also rounded off.  this one:

http://www.hsgalleries.com/gallery04/ducati900ssap_1.htm

I have two of the Hailwood replica kits and was thinking about just chopping that body cowling to get it as close in the look as possible.  I got a soft spot for naked bikes.

Is this the one you are looking for?

$9.43

Only bad thing is there is a $25 minimum order, and a $4.50 US handling charge.  I buy all my kits from there however, I buy them in bulk to save the money (3-4 kits plus paint at a time).

I think I'll build the Tamiya 1/12 Yamaha Virago 1000 I have in the stash.

I have a Blackbird, an NR and a 'Busa too, but I'd rather get a little more practice before starting them. Maybe if I finish the Yami quick enough I'll pick out one of the others.

if it looks as if it can work out in reality, engine, tranny, brakes, fuel tank, steering and suspension, I'd make the exception and look very much forward to it.  sounds like honda should keep an eye on this thread too eh?

Revell Germany started to have a Nortan Manx kit.  I don't know if it's a remake of matchbox or somebody nor the quality of it.  The last two Revell bike kits I got from that stvb seller on ebay were both old matchbox kits.  Ack at least he was always cool on shipping charges for buying in bulk.

I priced out the Dexter kit for the Duc 916, $25.00 (ouch) and the Tamiya kit itself will set me back $17.50.  I should be able to get started around the end of March.  It looks like the wife will be starting a new job at the begining of April which will require her to travel :(  I guess that means I get more model time.

Once I screw that one up, I mean complete it, I'll get started on the Honda NR.  The  Yamaha looks pretty straight forward, hopefully it won't give me any troubles.  If I get them completed in time I may try and tackle the Honda CBR 1100XX Super Blackbird.
