One technique I have seen and used to get the proper "sheen" for leather is to paint the item with flat color and then squinting and "skrunching" you forehead in great concentration, wipe your finger over your forehead and spread the oil you have picked up on the part. Work this in and buff the excess off....give a pretty good representation of the "sheen' of auto leather, not too glossy, not too flat and had the "depth" that real leather has.

Kinda gross but cheap!

Wait, doesn't everyone have a greasy forehead...????

BTW, I have heard of people using Vasoline in place of body oil.

Here's an update on the 250 GTO:
- I've finished polishing the body and am satisfied with my first real attempt at polishing. I'd like to polish it a bit more, but I'm not going to push my luck.
- The chassis and interior are 90% done and assembled. My only problem is the dash. I can't get the 'sheen' I want on it - either too glossy, or too flat!!
- I tried making a instrument panel from brass sheet but had significant troubles. I couldn't cut 'holes' for the gauges that looked good. I tried drills and all kinds of other stuff but the holes kept turning out ragged and poor. Definitely not what I wanted. I'm just going with the decal supplied in the kit.
- My next (and hopefully last) major task is to find a way to replace the kit glass. I won't have a problem with the side or rear windows, but the front is gonna be trouble. Anyone have any advise with using clear acetate (or something similar) for replacing the glass in a kit??
- I'd LOVE to make better clear headlight covers (ie. thinner), but I think that's going a little over my head. Unless I learn some really good things with the windshield, I think I'm gonna have to use the kit parts (very thick and distorted...bummer)
- I put a bit of a dark wash in the 'spoked' wheels and they came to life. I'm really impressed with the rims in this kit. They look nice (IMO).

Haven't done my taxes yet, but if it turns out OK, I may invest in a dig. camera!!

Here's my latest update:

I'm in the process of detail painting the engine. I've primed the body but still have final filling and sanding to do before I start painting. I'm also trying to decide what colors to use for the interior because I'm painting it a "non-standard" color. BTW, Steve, I think you said you were doing the Revell 360 Spider as well, right? How are you finding the fit of the engine? I finally cut off the couple of mounting pins and am just going to try and line things up properly when I assemble it in the engine bay.
I'm also trying to finish up a Monogram Lamborghini LP500S for a local contest in 2 weeks so the Ferrari seems to be taking a back seat to that right now.
Hopefully I can get my butt in gear and get them both done for the show. That was my original plan but...
Anyway, that's where I'm sitting right now.

My Mythos from Tamiya came with metal transfer decal thingyies.... and one of the items is the shift gate..... perhaps you can get one trough Tamiya????

Hi CBP ...

Well, I think I can be counted in on this CBP. I must admit I have not posted much ... well, anything for a while ... but, life ... you know, family work etc ... got in the way. I am building the Revell-Monogram 360 Modena Spider kit I mentioned many moons ago. I will post an update to my progress ... just as soon as I make some progress <grin>. The little time I have had to poke around here on the FSM community modeling forums ... I have enjoyed reading about the rest of the CBP's builders progress.

Here's an update on my 250 GTO:

- 90% of the parts are now painted. Mostly just assembly remaining. Of course, at this stage I usually go through a 'I don't like that shade of flat black' phase and choose to repaint things that are perfecly fine just the way they are. I'm try to resist this because it usually results in something that is worse than what I started with...
- My custom seats turned out pretty good. I mixed up some Future with Gunze flat base and created a 'semi-gloss' finish that looks pretty good.
- The interior is very 'basic' and not very detailed, but I'm sure the real thing was very similar to this. The only thing I'd really like to do is add the metal shifter gate that is trademark ferrari. I have no idea how to replicate this so if anyone has suggestions I'm all ears...
- The paint finished curing, so I started what would be my first 'real' polishing job. I worked my way through polishing cloths on the 'roof' and thought the result was fairly good. Unfortunately, not as good as I wanted. So, I decided to redo it, but this time polishing 'wet' rather than dry. It is MUCH more difficult to tell how much paint you've removed when you polish wet, but the results were much better. I've got about half of it polished now and I'm happy with the results. Of course, a couple minor 'specs' showed up in the paint that I can't get rid of. In retrospect, I should have done some minor sanding in between paint coats. The marks are small and nor readily noticeable, so I'll live with it.
- I did a test section of finishing it off with some auto polish/wax (nu-finish) and the results look promising. That will be the final step.

Sorry I don't have pics guys. I usually 'borrow' a dig. camera, but I haven't be able to recently. I'll get some eventually!

here's another question....... if theexterior is Roadstar Orange Pearl, what should the interior be???? I was thinking tan.... any sugestions????

well, i finally found a color for the car!!! Boyd's RoadstarOrange Pearl!!! Pics will come soon....... Maybesomeone can help me..... I'm still not sure how to produce xa nice shine???? Should i wet sand in between each coat of paint???? should i polish when i'm done???? I need help in this dept.

Hi guys! Sorry, Murray, I had left you out of my count, somehow...! Looks like you're doing quite well. I don't think a bit of modifying will result in you getting the boot out of CBP. You're gonna have to try harder!

Darren, I hope your current project goes really well. By the way, you know the next CBP project is a Concorde, don't you [:0]??? HaHaHa, just kidding, my friend!

And to Lito, don't worry, the next project (a figure, I believe) is not far away. Should we discuss that next project further??? What kind of figure? Are we still doing a fgure? Bust or full body? What scale?

As promised, I have started the polishing stage, after having sprayed 1 coat of primer, 3 coats of Fiat Red, and 4 coats of clear laquer (I did not want to use the airbrush to spray Future). Now, after about 1/2 hour of polishing with Turtle Wax, I'm seeing the difference, but it's always a tense moment because I'm always afraid of going through to the paint and primer, particularly on edges... The inside of the car, including engine, that can't be seen, has been painted black, and once the body is the way I want it to be, I'll start 'leathering', 'carpeting' with oils to acheive a more realistic look. So far, so good...

I've had kind of a slow start here. I'm doing some filling and prepping for primer tonight. I'm still in the process of building a paint booth(long story) so I'm hoping that the wind will die down here so that I can get outside and get some painting done.
I finally decided on a color. I picked up some paint that looks to be very close to Ford purple. I just had to do something different as far as color. :-)
Anyway, I'm still pluggin' away.

Sorry that I bailed on this CBP, I had planned on participating originally. I am in the thick of a very interesting project that I can't (or don't want to ) pull myself away from. Lots of scratchbuilding involved and it's going very well right now. I want to keep going while I'm making such great progress. I am keeping track of this thread though, I'm with you guys in spirit.

Here's an update on my 250 GTO.

- body painted and waiting to cure. polishing yet to come.
- all major assemblies glued and primed
- still 'touching-up' the interior and chassis with putty.
- most suspension goodies (there aren't many) are painted and ready for install
- here's where I broke a rule: the kit seats were vinyl and looked horrible. I chucked them and pulled a couple out of my spares box. I had a really nice set from an old Ferrari Daytona (Miami Vice) that I was going to put in, but unfortunately the ref. pics show seats that are totally different. I ended up taking a couple of seats out of an old Lamborghini and cutting them up with my Dremel. The end result is much better than what was in the kit (and one of my first ever times altering another kit part so much.)

Current dilemnas:
- the kit wheels are chrome and look pretty nice. However, any ref. pics I can find show the wheels as being painted dull light grey. I should paint them for authenticity, but I kinda like the chrome.... undecided yet.
- the kit glass is really thick and ugly. I'm considering putting some clear acetate in as a replacement, but I've never done that before (I think that would be another broken rule).

Did I already tell you I painted mine white with all black interior..? In the real world, I think it only exists in Red, though... My GTO (1984) is coming along real fine (touch wood). I decided to go for Red, instead of pink... My first red Ferrari..! I'm starting the polishing tonight.

Well, there's.. me..! (did not complete (yet) the first assignment (1/48 F-18), though, but the Ferrari project is going well, and I've just painted the car and I now need to varnish it and buff it).

So how many people are participating in this CBP any way???? It seems like the sAME 3 OR 4 people!!!!
