Silentmodeler-not a problem.  The decals are aftermarket, SuperScale, I believe.  I'll gather the info when I get home and update.  I think Hasegawa may make a 1/48 P-40 kit with the white tail, maybe an RAAF version?

edit-here is the link for the decals that I used.  My only issue is that the side light/dark color scheme doesn't match the top view.  Always good to check multiple resources..which I couldn't find any for Kinsley's plane. Therefore, I've got a 50/50 chance of being accurate Wink [;)]

Hey Silent,

The P40 is actually Bob's...if it is the P47 you are interested in it is the Academy in 1/72 scale.  The decals are more or less "stock".

Stephen-finished product looks great-almost thought I was looking at a photograph of a WWII maintenance crew, especially the overhead view-just having trouble figuring out how they got the Porsche in time capsule in the background...Wink [;)].  Seriously-nice work.

Thanks Joe, Bob and Espins for the nice comments. This has been a challenge to build, but I think it helped to improve my skills. Anyway here is the finished project.

Bob- Nice job on your P-40, it really came out well.

Winson- I like your Zero. You did a good job.

Joe- Thanks for hosting a fun GB.

And I appreciate everyone's help during this build.Cowboy [C):-)]

Bob - Great job on the P-40, it turned out really nice!  Cool [8D] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]  I'm also glad my tips on the kit were helpful, what a great community we have here eh?  Smile [:)]  The Hasegawa kit really is nice, but it does require some seam filling skills and you did great Bob!

Nucmedtec - very nice job on your Black Widow, and what a cool diorama!  Nicely done!  Cool [8D]

Winson - nice job on the Zero!  Hope to see more of your work.  Smile [:)]

I'll be starting up work again on my P-38F this week as I'm finally getting some of the projects finished and off my bench.  Whistling [:-^]

Winston-very nice build on the Tamiya Zero-nice weathered look

Stephen-very nice job on the P-61 & the diorama-the effort you put into is shows.

Well, the P-40E is finished...well, it still needs some more weathering and touch-ups, but....before I post the pics, I must thank Scott (Espin) for the tips he posted-a real life saver.  And although the kit has great detail, it is a bit of a bear filling all of the seams.  And I managed to loose the canopy mirror and one of the gun sights to the carpet monster...well, not carpet, but linolium...RAF Dark Earth, to be exact...and I didn't do a great job of masking the canopy.  I think I need to start spraying a coat of Future AFTER the Eduard mask is applied.  Well, anyway, here it is, worts & all....

Joe-thanks for hosting this Group Build.  This is an excellent subject with lots of appropriate builds-hopefully we can do it again sometime.

Hi, I would like to contribute my build to this GB. My entry will be the Taimiya 1/48 Zero done some months back for our local GB. If you might notice that some of the red zero's is not a perfect round shape, reason being 98% of the decals either cracked and badly yellowed. But the lucky thing is the kit is still great.

Here is some of my pics of the kit:

Feedback and comments is welcome and appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Well here is a trial set up for my display, please let me know what you think.

I still have a few pieces left to put on the Widow, but it is almost done. I'd like to get a few more accessories to fill in the base, that may come later. Cowboy [C):-)]

Holy Shnikeys! #0&*%$#! My P-40 is/was waiting on a new prop & spinner from Hasegawa( it suffered some melting when it was inadvertnly placed to close to the oven while some DiGiorno Pizza was being "delivered'?) Oh Well, I'm going to try and putty and fix this one. (I just realized I never ordered a new one!) I'll put this build into the pattern on short final and finish a GB!  My first one!  You guys are doing such a great job with the builds here I'm glad to be a part of this GB. I got a good amount of work done on the 1/48 Hasegawa kit over the holiday.  Got the bird about 90% built, now for the putty/sanding work.  My wife and daughter let me go sit down at the bench, have the History Channel on, and work for almost 8 TOTAL HOURS!!!! Big Smile [:D]  I did take a two hour break for lunch and to take my daughter swimming.  The only thing that would have made the day better would have been if I hadn't had to stop to go to a family barbeque/fireworks.

I will post a photo or two tonights howing how far I got.

Mark- Thanks for the tip on the decal softener. I always thought that Solvaset was the most powerful with respect to softening decals and to only use it as a last resort. I think I may ask some IPMS friends to bring their softeners to upcoming meeting and see if any of those will soften these Academy decals. The repairs on you Goose turned out just fine. That is a great looking little plane. I’m going to have to keep an eye out for one of those.

David- Nice P-38 you have there. I agree that those campaign medals are a nice touch.

Joe- Wow, I can’t believe that the build is almost over. I must be in line for the turtle award, as I actually started mine on Aug 7. I think I can still finish in time…..I hope, I hope, I hope.

Happy Fourth of July everyone!!

What?! Already!  I've only got thirty days left! I know its been two months since my last post and I really haven't gotten much further. So I guess I need to get off my keester and finish this model up. So I'm off to play. I hate these modeling slumps.Cowboy [C):-)]

Hi everyone,

Got through the majority of  my repairs on the Goose without too many dramas.

Had to use the spare canopy from the kit as I broke the other one removing it.

I got the colour matched ok but am going to have a hard time trying to match the paint chipping to the remainder of the plane.

Still a little way off though but plugging on a little at a time.

The props are only stuck on with blue tac.

I have been having difficulty getting the decals to settle into the recesses (Including those not place into a future pool). I have been using Solvaset, the strongest brew that I have although a very old bottle, and there is a small amount of settling into the panel lines, but I want more.  I think I have gotten to five applications of the Solvaset.  I think I may have to live with them as-is. I have considered slitting the decals with a new X-acto blade in the panel lines, but they are so tiny in 1/72........hmmmmm...any ideas guys?

Hi Jerry,

I believe that solvaset is for the 'setting of' and or helping with decal adhesion. I don't believe that it is of much help with helping decals conform to panel shapes/lines/rivets etc.

For this I use 'Mr Mark Softer' It's a Gunze Sangyo product and I have found it very good for this application.

I have also heard of people using white vinegar but haven't tried it myself.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

David,

From what I can make out in the photo it looks as if you have a fine build.  I like the special touch with the campaign ribbons.

A progress report- sprayed a clear coat using Tamiya clear gloss.  It was old and quite thick so I added much Tamiya thinner and it turned cloudy in the mixing container.  I sprayed it anyway and it turned out just fine.

I added the thick Academy decals and had some adhesion problems with a few of the tiny ones, so I placed those onto a thin pool of future, which seemed to work fine.
