Awesome work guys! With that quality of work on both of your cockpits, I'd swear its 1/32nd!

I might head out today to the American Airpower Museum, I just have to convince "She Who Must Be Obeyed." If not, I'm going down to the basement for a marathon session.

I've got the cockpit tub of the F-4 and one ejection seat completed (I forgot how damn time consuming all that photo-etching is.  With the exception of a wayward seatbelt that flew out of the tweezers into oblivion I'm happy with the results so far.

Looks great Frank!

Here are a couple of pics of my 48th tomcat cockpit. Some scratch built details and Eduard etch, but I'm satisfied with the final appearance. Just didn't turn out like I had imagined.

Okay...started today with the bang seats...here they are with the Tamiya smoke wash still wet:

Work will continue on the cockpit in the a.m. For this kit, I'm using Eduards PE set, Verlinden resin (but only the gun bay) and Aires cans.

Works fine, Scotty! If you want it to be displayed as part of your message, just add img brackets around it (like in your footer for the group badge).

Still haven't opened up the wrapping on the parts, but might take them for a wash over the weekend sometime! Started painting of the "base" of the ejection seats - before any straps, etc are added. Might start more serious work on the rest of the cockpit over the weekend (time allowing).

OK, I went and obtained a Photobucket account today so I am going to attempt to show a box photo with this just to test things out.  I still have a couple of projects that I want to finish, but I will start working on the cockpit this weekend.  The only additional parts that I plan on adding will be True Details ejection seats with True Details photoetch handles and rings.  Aside from that, I think that Hasegawa has provided enough to keep me busy.  Well, here goes nothing...

I got my bug-junk today and will start pretty-fying it tomorrow.  I recently got one of those quiet compressors so I have been working into the evening on my f-4.  With the exception of A.M. decals and Eduard's big-set, the F-4 will be OOB.  So far I have the cockpit bucket painted and waiting for some light dry-brushing (I can't find the brush to save my life), and the kit's ejection seats painted and ready for assembly (If I could find that damn brush!)...

I'm starting work tomorrow on my Tomcat. It's going to have True Details seats and Eduard PE. I'll post pics of my progress starting tomorrow night.

Yeah, I'm almost at the all-important decal stage of that kit, so I could really use those instructions.  Thanks!

Here's the status of my kits.  The bench is cleared, my Aircobra, Swordfish and Skyray are on hiatus and sprues are washed.  I spent some time on GreatModels this afternoon and ordered resin ejection seats for my Superbug, I haven't really dabbled in the realm of resin much.  I've used some resin figures for my armor kits, but never in a/c.  So this could be good for a few laughs.  I also ordered some photo-etch stuff for the bug, I like the looks of the pre-painted cockpit placards and instruments but always end up kicking myself for not doing the panels by hand.  Since I've got most of the F-4 components ready I'll be starting that one first with the bug to follow upon arrival of the aftermarket "junk."  *Gulp* As always I am full of anticipation, no wait that's not right, nausea, yeah!  That's it! Nausea about starting a kit that other people will look at.

Scott, thanks for the suggestions. As you said, it's a bit late. Fortunately this is not the first time I've touched resin (though not an expert by any means!) and do work with mask for the dust, wet as far as I can, etc.

What I did in the end, was to try the sprue cutters for one big flat part. It caused a bit of a break, so had to glue all up together again, then went for the rotaary tool! Fortunately I have a power socket right next to one of my outside doors and we had brilliant weather, so had the mask on, working ouside. First cutting, then went for the sander and all in all it came out fine! I have now base-coated and put the first grey on, so at least I'm starting to feel like I'm getting going with the model. Still need to open the box of the a/c kit itself!

Sea Bee,

Although it may be too late to help you this time, once you remove a large portion of the resin with a saw (or sprue cutters if the piece is small), you can sand off the rest.  To do this, place a sheet of sand paper on a piece of glass (or other hard flat surface) and remove the remaining waste by moving the piece in a figure 8 patern.  The best way is to use wet-dry sand paper that is wet as this will eliminate dust.  I have even heard of folks using a glass baking pan for this and filling the bottom with a layer of water.  If you do the job with dry sand paper, be cautious with the dust that you will create as you really do not want that stuff in your lungs.  I wish that I had thought of adding this comment sooner, but again, it may be of use in the future.

hey guys just a quick update...I combined the two kits and i wound up with a pretty good b model and an alright a model...i also started some work on the b. In order for me to put a phoenix and a lantrin pod on the wingglove pylons, i had to remove both of the premolded sparrows from them. so the pylons are all set up for some sanding and filling. also i opened up the boarding ladder compartment and ill see if i can get the foot steps open. next i start on the cockpit. lets see what else i can chop up Evil [}:)]

DiscoStu: Thanks for the scan! Will help a lot.

Scotty, that would be me (the 2nd asker). Started removing some of those excess resin over the weekend... what a miserable job! Still have the lenth of the main "tub" to go, which I'll more likely take a file to. Still think this cockpit set is going to take me longer than the rest of the model!

I was just catching up on my reading as I have been spending a lot of time on my bike lately racking up some miles before a refueling outage at work next month.  Anyway, it sounds as though the group has been keeping itself busy preparing for their builds with lots of research and acquiring parts and decals.

I did notice a couple of resin questions, and although I am no expert, I do have some experience with these parts.  For the person who asked, I purchaed the Verlinden 1/72 detail set several years ago, and I think that it is a very good one.  For the person who asked about the excess resin on the parts, yes, this is very common on parts no matter who the manufacturer is.  Some companies just seem to make it easier to remove than others though.

Best of luck! Get back as soon as you can...

Update: I won the Superscale 72-823 decal sheet on e-bay last night for $5.50 (not bad!), so now I can do an F-4B also.

 new F-14 Atlantic

Dusty F-18 Superbug

Not as dusty F-4..........

Bug and Phantom it is. Stupid two sided quarter!

I don't have SuperScale's sheet but I did get a "Bank error in my favor" and Squadron sent me two sets of Aeromaster's VF-84 F-4J JR set. What's a few letters amongst nitpicking detail freaks like us?

I'm also going to do an F-4J in VF-84 markings, if thats ok. Living Legend is doing the F-4N...so if anyone knows where I can get SuperScale Sheet 72-823, let me know, and I'll do an F-4B also.

Thanks! If scanning is an issue, you can either take a photo or just describe the differences to me in text. Should only be tail fins (inside & out), plane number, squad number (eg. 201) and people involved with that specific plane. And I think you need not even bother with the low-viz scheme - that one will be high-viz for sure!

Again - I really appreciate it a lot! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks for the info! Haven't had much time thusfar this week, just had a quick peek at the instruction pages for the cockpit set... jeez, there seem to be a lot to remove! They did indicate it very nicely on the instructions. Yet again, if all else fails... Will most likely have a grab at the rotary tool to get rid of everything - filing will take me up to the end of the GB! Wink [;)]

DiscoStu : you mentioned you're building (getting) a 48th Atl Fleet version. Is it at all possible to scan me the decal instructions for the VF84 options. I have the kit, but a Pacific fleet instruction booklet! No worries for the build, but the decalling...

well first yes the resin parts come on a stub that has to be removed

second, the f-14a(plus) is the same thing as the f-14b...well sorta... initiallly there was an f-14b but it was cancelled in favor of updating current A's.. thats where the f-14a (plus) came from...eventually the governing powers decided to call the (a+) a (b)...so its pretty much the same plane.

third itll look great either way you decide
