Looks like a 1/48 build, Bud, very nice.  The white on the tail looks just right for a South Pacific airplane.

Hi all, I was part of this GB and I had to leave it because I could not get a P-39 Kit. But a friend on here sent me one and after all this time I got it done.

Enjoy

This is 1/72, Small but still a sweet Build

Thanks again all

I never undersood from a design standpoint why they put the doors on both sides.  I'd be curious to know what the designers thought process was on that one. Confused [%-)]

you gotta ask yourself, why did they put doors on both sides? there is so little structure going on there, the whole thing must have been flexible as heck. Seal up that door and strengthen the whole structure up. In fact, loose the doors on both sides, triangulatesome structure down both sides with rigid skin and put a sliding or side hinged canopy on it. Much stronger andmaybe it would have become the world speed record holder instead of a Mustang . . .
Think of the stiffness of a Porsche Targa, vs a Porsche Coupe. Or a 5.0 Mustang convertible vs a hard top. Flexible might not be so good.

The paint and the decalling on your P-400 look really nice, Jeff.  As for the door, I'll bet they were a constant headache on the 1:1 birds.

Well besides the door ( that you can still fix ) its looks great to me. I think you should be proud of it. I say go for both doors open.

I still have not unpacked mine from the move yet. So no progress for me.

DOOHH!!!  Umm... it must have been shot out on its last mission...  yeah, thats it!

You're right, Marc.  I didn't realize until after glueing together the wing halves that I forgot to put it in.  I'm planning on digging up some Krystal Kleer or similar product on my next LHS visit to fix it.  So, I guess I'm not done!

The door was a disappointment, but it really doesn't look as bad in person as in the photos.

Looks great!  Sorry to see you had problems with the right door.  But it still looks great, nicely done!  Cool [8D]

And you should be satisfied... it looks great.  How good is the door glued in there?  Maybe pop it off have 'em both open.  The door fit is an issue with the Eduard kit.  Took a lot of fitting/snding/filing/fitting etc to get it in reasonably well.  You did a real nice job on her.

And BTW... you forgot the landing light glass in the lower wingWhistling [:-^]

P-400 Done!
Posted by jeff on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 3:37 PM

Well guys, finished my Eduard P-400 a couple of days ago.  Here's a few pics:

You can see the fit of the right door was pretty lousy.  Of course, after I glued it closed I learned that most P-39/P-400 pilots used the right door for entry and left the left door closed due to the throttle location.  Live and learn.

Its not evident on these side photos, but the Eduard supplied window masks on the front quarter windows peeled up a little during the painting process, and allowed some overspray, though not too bad.  I'll use Tamiya tape all over next time.  I did appreciate the masks, though for painting the shark mouth black background and the black wing walkways.

Not perfect by any means, but I'm pretty satisfied with it overall.   This was my first Eduard model, and I was very impressed with it.  I've been back in the hobby for a little over a year now, and the tips and techniques I've picked up from you guys and others on this board have greatly improved my modeling.  Look forward to seeing the rest of your builds!

Thanks Marc.  I've applied some more decals and modified my technique by brushing on the solvent over the decal for 5-7 seconds, almost scrubbing it on.  The more I brush, the better the solvent seems to cover (i.e. less beading) and perform.  In short, it seems to be improving. Not as well as I had hoped, but  I think it will turn out nice in the end.

I used the kit decal on the foirst one i didi form the dual combo box and didnto have a problem.  I used Micro Set and Micro Sol.  If it is onlythe panel lines that won't settle in, try scoring the decal with a real sharp blade along the panel lines.  Looking forward to the end result.

Eduard decal question
Posted by jeff on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 2:10 PM

Hey guys,

I'm in the home stretch now with my Eduard P-400, camo is all on, coat of future, and I'm starting to apply the kit decals.  I can get the decals on fine, but unfortunately, they refuse to settle down into the panel lines/surface detail with my decal solvent.  I'm using Mr. Mark Softer, which I've read is one of the more aggressive solvents, and have applied it twice with no result.  It worked great on my last model, a Tamiya Buffalo with kit decals, so I'm kind of surprised to be having this trouble now.  When I apply the solvent, it just beads up on the decals then dries with no visible effect.  Is this something with Eduard decal?  Has anyone else building the Eduard kit had this problem?

Hi all, sorry for no progress pics. I'm almost done with my P-400, it just needs the landing gear, canopy, and the little "fiddly bits", plus a flat coat and weathering. I don't have any pics of it because I've been using the camera for other things (filming me and my friend doing stupid stuff with sticks, logs, hoses and BB guns-don't ask!) I'll try to get some posted this week.

Current Builds: If I were to list everything I have in progress, it'd take way too long! Some notable inclusions:

Hasegawa 1:48 KI-84

Tamiya 1:48 P-51D (in Iwo Jima long-range escort markings)

4 (yes, four) Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1s (1x -1D, 1x -1A, and 2x -1s)

My P-39 is just about done, just need to add the Pliot tube the wing and take photos. Waiting for my new photo tent to show up then I'll take photos. All I have to say is this kit fought me from start to finish...but I got it done and it looks decent, but not perfect.

The gulf coast office of the Progress Dogs is still here. However due to our recent move no progress on any model has been made. The P 39 is still next on the bench but it may be a week or so before work starts up again. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.SoapBox [soapbox]Cool [8D]
