I'll start with a 1/72 Testor's Ryan BQM-34, Model 147SC.  Better know as the Buffalo Hunter or Bumble Bug drone.  I'll try to get something else going also, if I finish some other group builds in which I am involved.

Hey Will.

When you say AM is limited to one item, is a resin cockpit set an item or many items?

I'm not trying to be funny or anything I'm seriously asking as if I decide to re-scribe this beast then I'll want to replace the pathetic cockpit.

It doesn't matter which answer you give as

Yes= cool cockpit and rescribed model

No = Dodgy stock pit but lots of work saved on the scribing.

It's win win.

Cheers

Mark, are you already trying to upstage my 105?????Laugh [(-D]  I tease. Don't worry, I haven't finished construction on an aircraft in a long time.

I think that counts as one AM piece.

LOL MortarMagnet.

I'm not trying to out do you. I just love the 105. It's one of my favourite AC and I'm torn between doing a killer job on this less than perfrect kit or doing it OOB and then having an excuse for the Trumpeter 32nd 105.

It's only the fact that the Trumpeter kit is bigger than my house that is really stopping me doing anything about it.

By the time I put all the stuff on the revell version that I want. I could probably buy the trumpy kit anyway and have change for the 16 tins of paint it'll take to cover it.

If you've seen my F-111 I'm doing for my dad, you'll probably understand that I'm a liitle over scratch building at the moment.

I'll be doing Arkansas Traveler too. I love the WWII victory marks under on the fuselage.

It's a good thing Panzerwulff is doing the Jolly Green as a LOT of 105 pilots really needed those guys.

Cheers.

Hi all,

Interested in coming aboard -- I've a range of possibilities, I've always fancied a Starfighter in cammo, though the RM A-37 would be an interesting build, and the RG ex-Hasegawa F-4E is really begging me to build it...

Can't decide now!

'One item' is one item that you purchase or have purchased, like an eduard PE set, or resin cockpit set.

Put me down for this GB.

I am ex-USAF, and a Phormer Phantom Painter, and would like to do an F-4, but I see we already have the USAF models covered, so I'd like to try my hand at Monograms 1/48 F-4J in the makings of "Showtime 100", Duke Cunninghams bird.

I understand he's locked up now, for his wrong doings, but back in the 60's he was a hero jet ace, and thats how I intend to remember him.

If you are going to do the Revellgram F-4J dont use the office it comes with, its actually detailed as the office of the F-4E. Pick up Legend Productions F-4J 1/48 cockpit detail set for Monogram F-4J, it's a resin detail set that acurately details the front and back offices of the F-4J

I'm in! May be a little while before I start building though. I need to narrow down what I want to build. Feb '08 is good though! Plenty of time.

It'll either be a Skyraider, F-104C, F-100F, F-100, or an F-105D or G. I got all of them in the stash, just need to decide which one! You can put me down for TBD.

Raised panel lines. Ugh! If anyone has ideas about elegant ways to deal with them, I'm all ears. And no, I don't particularly want to rescribe them. There are lots Shock [:O]

I'll be doing the same scheme as the box art.

My solution to the raised panel lines is to leave them alone until after all the painting is done.  Then take a soft grafite pencil and holding is sideways, lightly drag it down the length of the line.  This leaves the line darker than the surrounding area and creates the same effect as dark paint in a recessed line.  If you sand off part of a line when fixing a seam, just run an X-Acto blade along where the line was before.  This will create a ridge that will show up the same as the original line.

thanks, yardbird, very helpful advice. The underside is black, so I was thinking of panel lines in reverse, i.e. drybrushing in a lighter shade than black, but the pencil trick for the upper side is quick, simple and above all reversible if I mess it up! Big Smile [:D]

I'm doing the 1/32 Testor's HH-43 with the Cobra company detail set. I got the box open last night, got the resin into the blech wite and started cleaning up a few pieces. I've built this kit once before OOB, the detail kit is going to be a big improvement since the kit interior is pretty minimal.

The HH-43 is not nearly as well known as the HH-3 Jolly Green but it was the first SAR helo in Vietnam, had the most rescues during the war, had the record for the fastest rescue (1 minute, 30 seconds) and was the last SAR helo to leave.

I would like to do an A-1E with the Matchbox kit, the Tamiya or Monogram kit, and the Cobra Company resin interior.  Is that legal, or is it considered too much aftermarket?  Likely I'll need non-kit decals also.

Hi Guys,

I just checked Will's details and he hasn't been on this site since the 13th.

I know Will is a School student and therefore maybe tied up with the new school year.

I'm sure you'll be added to the title page in no time at all and from what I can see your build all seem to fit the bill.

I'm running a little behind time as the model I was suposed to have done for Christmas only just got finished. I'm now working on another build for he south pacific group build. I think it'll be about a month before I start work on my F-105. I have ordered my cockpit and I'll have to wait for that to turn up.

Cheers

Here is the cockpit for my HH-43, the cobra company kit offers a huge improvement in detail here as the kit cockpit was pretty minimal. Still needs a touch more detailing but almost done here.

While the rest of the crew may be in the same predicament, it's almost always the pilot's job to arrive at the crash site first.

Skypirate, I love this in your sig

"While the rest of the crew may be in the same predicament, it's almost always the pilot's job to arrive at the crash site first."

It reminds me of a helicopter pilot's helmet that flew me into a fire. On the back of his helmet he had a broken helicopter inside a red circle with a line through it and in block letters below that Crashing Sucks. I wasn't sure if I should feel comfortable that he was against crashing or be concerned that he might have more experience with aerial mishaps than most.

Wiccan nice job on the cockpit, I can't believe how much the seat belts add to it.

Aaronw Big Smile [:D] thats funny, we should start a thread on things you dont want to see on the back of the pilots helmet lol.

"living sucks"

"Tap my helmet if you hear snoring"

"DO NOT DISTURB THE PILOT as he tends to wake up crying"

Kenny, I  don't think Will will mind.

He'll have a bit to catch up on when he does remember though.

Have a good day all.

I saw that you didn't get me posted on the participating list...... Whistling [:-^]

Got started on the Cessna this week.  That is a small plane.  I also dug out some 'yet to be completed' aircraft that I'll show off here for all to critique; a F-4, A-4, A-6, A-7  I am leaning towards making them all Navy, maybe from the same aircraft carrier.

Will try to post a photo or two later when the camera returns (at a birthday party for most of the day).

Looking good Wiccan Warrior. I was able to get some work done on my Phantom. Cockpit is complete. OOB Monogram I decided to save my True Details cockpit for one of my Hasegawa kits. It's going to be built as Boots Blesse's A/C at DaNang 1967.

Greetings fellow Rakkasan,

I may join your group build.  Since the end date is February 2008 it gives me plenty of time.  Right now I'm in the Fleet Air Arm group build.

Your 1/35 UH-1H is looking good, im building the Revell 1/32 version, dont think i've been added to the group build yet. Not sure whether to go with the 1/35 Dragon weapons or get the cobra company mounts in 1/32.

Nice work

Thanks for the kind words Andy

I just finished the Revell 1/32 Huey still got three more in my stash to get started on.

The Panda huey is ok but there are a few obvious issues with it. I just love building Hueys.

Like i said thanks for the kind words and hopefully i can get this one completed as i am currently building the 1/48 Academy CH-53E. Is it BIG !!!

Everyone is making some pretty good progress!

I'm very jealous. I've still got a little work to do on my current build before it's full steam ahead with this build.

It's been a long time since Will was on this site.

How would you all feel about starting another group build under the same name that can be updated by an ACTVE member.

There is a lot of interest in this build and it'd be nice to have all your names on the list of participants as well as a few or you that need to have your builds approved.

Let me know what you think.

Checking in once a day is a bit unrealistic.  I am hosting several GBs and I can usually stay on top of them daily, but there are times when I'm buried with work, family and other responsibilities and I just can't check in everday.  I'll be in Vegas in 2 weeks where I'll be out of contact for the most part for 4 days.  Life comes first.  Remember the hosts of the GBs have jobs, go to school, have families, travel, computer problems, health problems etc just like everyone else.  Just be patient.  Smile [:)]

I have never seen anyone ever tell someone they couldn't join a GB.  Just get to work, and start posting your progress pics. Big Smile [:D]  He'll be back in no time and will get you updated on the roster.  Smile [:)]

Big Smile [:D] Cool [8D]  With that said I will start looking for a good kit.  I was thinking of doing a OV-10 in 1/72 from Academy.  Any suggestions, recommendations or comments are welcomed.

I remember building an OV-10 Bronco when I was a little kid, we're talking like Kindergarten.  My Dad helped me, but I remember trying to brush paint the white on the wings.  It had more than a few fingerprints on it..  Big Smile [:D]

I'm not up to speed on the current kits, but I'm sure that by tomorrow someone with some knowledge on the OV-10 will be able to give you some suggestions.  Smile [:)]

It has taken longer to get to this point than I anticipated.  But here are a couple of progress photos of the O-2A that I am working on for this GB (still not listed - Arrii 1/72 Cessna O-2A).

The kit is going to take some putty and sanding...

For the OV-10 in 1/72 Academy and Hasegawa have both done kits.  The Academy kit is much newer and it seems like I remember that it is fairly good, but I can't locate any reviews.  The Testors 1/48 kit is pretty hard to make look like an OV-10 because the span of the inner wing between the nacelles is too short, and of course the horizontal stabilizer is also too short.  I have a some Missing Link parts for the cockpit and engines, but the real cure is a Paragon set which replaces the kit wing entirely and most of everything else, but it is out of production.

hi folks, the Canberra went down over Hue a couple of months ago, and it's taken me two months to crawl back to friendly positions Tongue [:P]

The cockpit is done (not a good one but I'm not a big cockpit fan), fuselage assembled and seams filled, flaps dropped and everything that should be chromate green is now done.

Bomb bay, wings and fueltanks are next on the list, as are some photos as progress reports are a bit dull without them! Wink [;)]

I think I will go with the Academy OV-10A in 1/72.  I have looked around the web and have not found a Hasegawa kit of the OV-10 in any scale.

Keep an eye on eBay.  That is where I got my Hasegawa 1/72 kit (haven't built it yet).  You might want to look at some other web sites that deal in older kits.  Hasegawa issued thiers back in 1994, and Hobby Link-Japan lists it as discountinued.  Have you tried www.classicplasticmodels.com yet?

Gotten some work done, since it is OOB did not do much work in the cockpit and the wheelwells. The fuseluge seams have been sanded and the wing are almost sanded also, just the wingtips to finish.

That's a nice looking Phantom.  I hadn't seen those markings before, I think I'll try to find them in 1/32.  I like the way it looks kind of faded but not over weathered, like the photos I see of them in Viet Nam.  Is this the first finish in this GB?

Looks like you're making good progress on the T-28, John.  Looks good.  I seem to be mired in details on several models at once.  On the A-1E I suspect I am suffering from having one nearby that I see about once a week, so details are bothering me that I would normally miss.  On the articles I have by other people that have done the A-1E, they often have missed the vents the E has just above the wing leading edges on the fuselage, the different shape of the forward landing gear covers, differences in armor plating, and the shape of the cooling air intake on the vertical fin.  Some have used the Matchbox landing gear covers, but they are not much like the ones on the A-1E near me or the photos I have of A-1E's.  I'm just about done with all these things, I made some masters for the gear doors and made a silicone mold to cast new doors  today.  Using a fair amount of Milliput lately.

Well, I finally got this O-2A this far.  Lots of putty and sanding.  Not wild about the ARII kits, but it was the only one that I had found for this plane.  I may try to finish some of the Navy 1/72 aircraft (F-4, A-4, A-7) that I have that would fit into this build, if I can get some other builds completed first.

This is not one of my best works, but I am glad to add it to my Vietnam era shelf.

The O-2 looks good, mph.  You'll like it better when a little time has passed and the warts that only bother you fade from memory.  At least that's how it works for me!  It looks good in the photos!

Thanks jeaton01 - I know what you mean.  Having put it next to an F-111 and an A-37, the "warts" are already not so noticable.

Well I've just read Scream Of Eagles and feel real inspired to do an F-4 so can you add me down to the list?  Don't know what version or kit though.

Ygmodeler, I'd say go for the F-4, the fellow who started this GB is sort of absent so we just moderate ourselves.  I'm working on a Matchbox/Tamiya 1/48 A-1E.  I'm a little slow but right now I'm scratching some new landing gear covers because none from the kits look much like what is on an A-1E I see about once a week.

Finished this a little while ago. Kit is straight OOB except for added weight in the nose and I plugged the clear post hole in the speed brake. Painted aircraft gray over light gray. Decals are RVNAF out of the box. Overall not a bad fit ofr a kit copyrighted in 1958. No wheel well details molded in and cockpit is sparse.

Looks good, GdadJohn!  There's a soft spot in my heart for the Monogram T-28's.  I built several when they were first released and the last one was about 3 years ago, a T-28A that was done jointly by me and my two grandsons.  No paint, just glue and decals.  And fun!

Progress is sort of stalled on my A-1E.  I'm making masters to cast new gear doors.  Never build a model of something that is nearby to look at.  The accuracy bug will infect you!

I got the A-1E gear doors done finally, working on the resin interior now.  Pictures soon.  Anyone else making progress?  I'm sure there is.

A-1 Progress Report.  The gear doors need more smoothing out but the shape is there.  The pictures of the vertical fin show the milliput added so I can get the air inlet drilled out and shaped once the fuselage is together.

The forward fuselage pictures show the filling and shaping necessary in front of the windscreen, and also the exhaust vent spliced in on the Tamiya part (from the Matchbox part) just above the wing leading edge.  I think this is an oil cooler vent, not sure, but it is a difference between the A-1E and the narrow body types.

The wing pictures and gear door photos have notes on them.  The resin interior is from Cobra Company and is very detailed and well cast, there are some minor warp issues but only on large flat parts, not hard to deal with.  The assembled tub is made up of 8 separate parts and fit well, and also fits in the mocked up fusdelage well, but I am having some trouble getting the paint to stick, when I tried masking some of the interior parts the masking tape lifted the paint.  I think I'm going to have to strip off the paint and try something more aggressive than the dish soap I used to clean the resin parts the first time.  Not happy with the finish anyway, after trying to patch the paint that lifted.  I'm not good at repairs like that.

Another progress report, although I'm afraid everyone else is done and I might be talking to myself!

Here are a bunch of pictures.  I've filled in the lower cowl flap, finished the dive brake installation, put together the engine and cowl, and a bunch of other stuff.  All of it, with notes, is on my web site here

It is done.  I did it in the markings of War Monger, 132528, of the 6th SOS at Pleiku.  What better name for a Skyraider than War Monger!  I did the aircraft specific decals with my ALPS printer, the rest are from the Tamiya A-1J sheet.  The canopy is all from the Matchbox kit except the sliding portion which is from a Squadron vac canopy, with all the framing sanded down and repolished.  The fit of the windscreen was difficult, and I'm not really satisfied with the windshield, it's a little messy but it's not bad enough for me to try taking it off and starting over.  I am quite pleased with how the model turned out.  In the process of researching the markings I spent some time on the Skyraider Association's web site (just Google Skyraider and it will come up) and learned that the A-1E's were called "Fatface" for obvious reasons.  So it's a Warmonger fat face.

Thats some great work John.

Looks like you put a lot of work into that kit and the results are excellent.

I've not seen too may 'E's' built. It's a kit that I'd really like to build one day too.

Fantastic work on the decals as well.

Looking inside the wheel well, is that the kit detail or did you scratch build that.

I've pretty much given up on this GB and might save my 105 for another similar themed one that has the creator as an active member.

I look forward to sseing you on the P-40 GB as soon as Mr wolf ok's my participation.

Top work on the A-1

Thanks, Mark.  The wheel wells are what comes in the Tamiya kit, modified by removing the gear doors and adding card stock to the lower wing to make the circular opening.

It does seem like everyone has left the build, doesn't it.  That's too bad, there are so many good subjects.
