I've metallized the engine nacelles!  Generally I hate painting large components before they are bonded, but the geometry of these nacelles didn't leave me much choice.  I hope that I can mend the seams at the wings well enough after I bonded them on.

Incidentally, if your wondering, the two metallic colors are aluminum plate and stainless steel (both from rattle cans).  I must say, they look quite nice together, better than I expected.

Dave, Gary has had an air show for the past nine years. This year they brought in the ThunderBirds and the Stealth bomber (Spirit) Also the Lima Lima team and an F15-e F15-A, F-16, and a P51D Mustang, always a great show.

I have started the decals and so far, so good no broken ones yet.

I will finish.

Yeah, it's been a real battle.  You all may recall me saying that if there was one kit in my stash that would be harder to build than last year's Mig-31, this B-58 would be it.  It has not disappointed!

This build has been an awesome experience, though.  I've learned so many new techniques!  It's something that every modeller should do at some point: take a jacked-up kit and make it into a decent model.  It requires a lot of thought and planning.

If you want to see an awesome example of just this sort of work, check out this link and see how a beautiful Yak-28 was built by the great "Bondo Phil" Brandt.  This is modelling in its truest form.

About that turtle award: I think it would be so ironic if last year's turtle (Tony) beats my B-58 (with "Rapid Rabbit" nose art ) accross the finish line.  Especially since I took a break in the middle of my build, just like the rabbit in the famous story "The Turtle and the Hare".

Me thinks Tony is angling for the infamous turtle award again this year. Wink [;)]

Air show in Gary?  I don't remember any airshow in Gary when I lived there?   Is that something realtively new (like in the last 2o years - hey, I'm old and I know it)  I do remember going to an airshow in downtown Chicago along the water front with the Blue Angels.  Now THAT was TOTALLY AWESOME!!! Cool [8D]

IL2, I'm beginning to think it would have been ust as easy for you to have built this thing from scratch.  Awesome work, keep the pics coming.

I'm almost done my E555.  The last major hurtle is to paint the tires.  ALL 10 OF THEM!!! Feels like doing road wheels on armour. Yuck [yuck]  Hope to have some pics to post soon.

Yeah, that fishing trip was one to remember.   Lots of fun.

Work continues on the B-58.  Lately I've been focusing most of my efforts on building and finishing the engine pods and the centerline tank.

This Tamiya fine primer is da' bomb!.  I'm completely sold on the stuff: I think it's going to make a big difference in my modelling.   The stuff cures fast, after about 3 hours you can sand it to a perfectly smooth finish.  This ability is going to be especially important for this build since large parts of the model have been rebuilt, then the whole thing was rescribed.  It has already made huge improvements to the engine pods and centerline tank, especially in places where I had caused damage when re-scribing.

I'm painting the model with Metalizer spray cans.  The engine pods already have the first coat (not shown).  People say that tape will easily pull the stuff up, but I've performed some pull-tests using Tamiya yellow tape, and I couldn't get it to ripp the stuff off.  Maybe the metalizers adhere better to this new primer I'm using.  I hope it doesn't come back to bite me later when I start masking.

The last two photos show the end result of my scratch-building efforts on the inlet cones and the engine exhausts

Kenny glad to hear your still around & kicking good luck with the quest for lodgings.

As for IMS III I'd be up for it at the end of the year.  It would give me a chance to clear out a couple of other projects on the bench.

Thans for all the comments guy's. I liked this GB a lot and the whole process was a lot of fun. I am with IL in that I will be ready for #III when we get around to it. Might need a little break first though until we get this one finished. I also hope that our fearless leader will be around to lead us again for a #III. Good luck Kenny. I will be waiting for it.

Well guys,

I have returned victoriously from my fishing trip!  I have a freezer full of ocean fish for this summer!  I got caught up on the thread, just in time to save it from getting bumped to page 2!

bbrownii - thanks for showing how you do water waves with foil.  I've never bothered to look it up, but it's something that I might have to do for a winter Grumman Goose project I'm dreaming up.  I got to fly co-pilot in a Grumman Goose on my fishing trip!  Taking off water!!  It was certainly the coolest ride I've ever been on.

Arki - awesome work as usual, bud.  All of your efforts payed off, because your model looks very realistic.  It's amazing how much the little details can add to an overall finished model.  I love the mossie, it's one of my all-time favorite airplanes.  Must be pretty big at 1/48.

Regarding your comments on puttywork, here is a quick rundown on my method:  First I use tamiya tape to mask around the area, then I apply&sand putty in layers which takes a long time.  First I apply SQDN white putty, because it dries very hard and makes a durable foundation.  I usually like to wear surgical gloves and apply putty with my fingers.  Then I let it cure for at least 6 hours, and sand to shape with sanding sticks and paper (occasionally jewelers files).  Then I remask about 1/8" outside of the white putty area and apply the second layer: this time SQDN green putty.  Green putty sands smoother and feathers better at the edges, making a better final surface.  Sometime after 6 hours, I sand with the same techniques, then I usually have to do final spot-work on any pits, blemishes, etc.

I've recently purchased and experimented with Tamiya fine primer, which sands really nicely: even better than putty.  I'm looking forward to getting a layer of it on my B-58, because I think it will really add the finishing touches to those putty areas.  I wouldn't know, but I'm guessing that it's really important to have perfect surface for a NMF finish.

razor - You E555 looks awesome, especially now that you pulled the canopy masks.  Super cool kit, dude.  You're getting quite close.

sidure - Great finish on that IL2.  It's beyond my understanding how you accomplished that paint job.  Really great work.   Sucks that you LHS is gone!  And it sound like you even missed the close-out sale!! What a bummer.  Online stores are killing the LHS I think.

T-greg - I think I've seen 1/24 mustang decals a few times at online decal shops.  It might be worth your while to look for them if you have crappy decals.  Let me know if you can't find them, and I'll see if I can remember where they were.

Work on my B-58 continues, but photos wouldn't show much.  I'm still scribing panel lines, but I'm almost done with that tedious task.  I took a break from scribing last night and worked on assembling the engine nacelles.  I dry-fitted them to the wings and flew the model around the house for a while.  That's an important part of any of my builds.

I don't think anyone has brought this up yet: but are there any prospects for a IMS3???  Any interest?  Or perhaps it would be best to wait a few months before we started it up again.  Just wondering what everyone else thinks of the idea.

Great work on all fronts Make a Toast [#toast]

Airfix came through for me. I just received a new windscreen in the mail today from the U.K. I can now remove my horrible Yuck [yuck] rendition of a vacu-formed windscreen and put a real one on. I have given the Doll a coat of paint and put most of the other stuff on. Wheels etc. I should have her completed this weekend. I worry about the decals. the kit was purchased in 1991 and they are Airfix. Any suggestions on how best to handle these? I have had terrible luck with old kit decals.

Thanks a lot all. Yeah, a week ago I was in full scale panic when the whitewash cracked all over and I thought it was ruined. Luck it was thick enough that I could sand smooth all the cracks and then blend it all together with some creative weathering. Steve

Thanks a lot Dave. It was touch and go at times but I like how it turned out. Now I cant wait to see how that E-555 turnes out. It was looking amazing at your last progress report, cant wait to see it finished. I went to my LHS today to pick up the same kit and to my horror it is out of business. I hate what is happening to the LHS business. Now I have to drive 30 miles to a shop that is only good for supplies.

Wow Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  It turned out beautifully Steve.  I wasn't too sure about the panel line weathering at first but it seems you were able to pull it all together quite nicely.  Well Done.

Now where is that E555????  Been kinda hectic around here lately with not much time to spare.  My wife is taking a course this week and we adopted my wife's niece and nephew for the summer (to go along with our own three kids) and I moved the work bench out of the workshop into the den this week Propeller [8-] in preparation for renovating the workshop into another bedroom...  Whew... I'm tired just thinking about it.  Hope to near completion on my build this weekend though.  Crossing my fingers.

Well I am calling this one done. A little touch ups here and there but it's done. To recap, this is the AccMini kit and its a real gem. It's my first time building one of these and it will not be my last, great detail and fit. Any problems with this model were of my own doing. Thanks to Kenny for hosting a great GB and looking forward to III.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement guy's it was a fun GB. Any comments or critique is welcome.

Thanks fellas. The carrier film is all but gone under a gloss coat and followed by a dullcoat. By the way anyone know what those markings are for?, I dont have a clue but I see them on Russian birds all the time. I wasent going to put that decal on but it showes it in the instructions even with the witewash so I put it on. Tonight all the fiddly bits go on and she will be done except for a touch up or two.

Looks very good Steve...except for the decal over the nose.  The large carrier film stands out from the weathered surface below.  Do you think there is any way to weather over it or somehow make it go away?
