welcome to the build Chris

im still making my mind up about a Late Tamiya Panther G in Berlin with some steal wheels and extra late bits added
or a Early Dragon Panther A in Italy or the East
or a Tamiya Panther G early in Normandy
or late Dragon Panther A in Normandy
ive got a Verlinden Panther G zimerit set (its not very good might make it into a panther pillbox)
ive got Eduard barrels for both A and G and some Eduard PE sets including PE Zim i dont think ill use it, i want to try it myself
and ive got a whole library about the Panther family
i hope i can make my mind up

Looks like I'll be doing Tamiya's Panther G kit with the PE zimmerret. Got it for $26 looking around at other sites this seemed to be a good deal. Now just got to get a few current builds off the bench before this starts.

Great deal nmayhew on your G. Maybe I ought to look at evilbay more often. I missed out on some guy locally selling Tamiya and other kits for $10-$15 each. He had thirty, they sold out in a heartbeat. Disapprove [V]Sad [:(]

BTW, my G doesn't come with any unit markings, so I'm a little stumped.
I assume they were in the Wiking or Gross Deutchland units?

i'm looking for inspiration here... (as mentioned above i have a number options open to me thanks to an evilbay frenzy!Evil [}:)])
i know the panther looks sooooo coolCool [8D], but for me it's as much aboout knowing unit history or the battle the tank took part in etc etc as much as the looks of the thing.
i'd love to hear from you guys...

I agree with Jon, model one of them with some missing, I've seen many pictures like that. I like your dio idea Derek. Just do it! You can get Tamiya's Frontline Recon team #35253 to go with the Kubelwagen.

Thanks for the pointers on the Schurtzen guys now I need to decide if I model them on or off! The Schurtzen look cool but the track sag does too. Tongue [:P]
Almost picked up a Tamiya A today. Would make an interesting dio with a beat up A and a brand new G with some officers and crew around checking out the "replacement". Maybe toss in a Kubelwagen or staff car and set it in a grassy area near some trees, name it "Preparing for the Ardennes.". Cool [8D]

Tigerman, I like the DML kit. The details are nice and the kit is cheap. Like I said I will be substituting some Tamiya parts but only because I want to not really because they need it.

nmayhew, I bought the old Panther A the other day too, same reason...........no reason at all. I thought with enough spare parts (DML/Tamiya) that I have laying around I could make this into a respectable model to look at....not necessarily accurate in all respects but overall ok.

Thanks guys, I'm running into a lot of conflicting info on this tank.[:0] one item that seems to cause contention is barrel length.Angry [:(!] The 7.5mm KwK 42/L70 should be pretty self explanatory (at least to those familiar with US naval guns). It is a 75mm gun, model 42 with a length (L) equal to 70 X 75mm. Barrel length, therefore, MUST be 5250mm (206.7" or 17.2') plus the muzzle brake.Approve [^]

I think my research created more questions than answers! Banged Head [banghead]
I think I will just order stuff and let the chips fall where they may.Cool [8D]

Derek the late panthers had shulzen ive got a couple of photos of them
the one Larry was on about early in the thread had shulzen, a late panther G on the eastern front, Ortwig by Kustrin, the cammo is diagonal tricolour stripes, its the same panther they show in the documetrys about the Battle for Berlin

Derek, let's assume since Tamiya put Schurzen in their Late model kit according to Jon, they must have come with it. Actually (Just thought of it and checked it out) my "Armor At War Series Panther" through the Military Book Club, shows two line drawings of late model Panthers with schurzen. Hope I helped.

Yes Jon, I like Schurzen on Panthers, can't explain why, just do. Thanks for the info on the Panther Late. That will become my third Panther someday and of course, I need to add a Jagdpanther. With three Panthers in the fold, I would probably skip the schurzen on at least one of them. Come on DML get on the stick. Censored [censored]

Kenneth, is the old DML G a decent kit? I can't find one anywhere.

Nmayhew, doesn't Cavalier make resin zim for a Panther. Eduard, I believe is brass.

Bill, I can't bare to dirty my models up yet either. I like to make them appeared used, but I want the details to stand out, not the mud.

For the Panther fanatics, here's a collection of kit correction info for DML and Tamiya Panthers. I may skim it when I build mine and fool around with some of the tweaks that would be easy to do, because I find that kind of monkeying around to be diverting.

http://www.elccweb.com/MissingLinks/Tweaks/Panther_TweakList.pdf

By the way, it's a pdf, so you'll need the right software to see it.

i was just looking at it on hannants website.

by the way, is the kit really that bad??

hi guys,
i just had one of those compulsive purchase moments (you know, the ones where the wife/girlfriend is out on the town and you're left at home!!)on evilbayEvil [}:)], and have now bought tamiya's old panther A kitSmile [:)]
i know that it's not widely regarded, but i now need to know does anyone make resin zim for it?? (sorry mosesTongue [:P])
from the pic on the box i would say that it is a "late" A, since it has ball/bubble hull mg mount, combined with slit drivers's port (i've got the distinction right haven't i?)

QUOTE: would you do this to a panther http://missing-lynx.com/gallery/german/migpanthg.htm it looks good but what a shame

Ah, if only I had the skill to make that an option. Sad [:(]

Beautiful and very, very effective diorama. Looks like not many of the crew got out. Hull's still buttoned up.

And that is the typical fate of the Panther, let's not forget -- destroyed in combat.

Kenneth;

Good luck with the Aber tool clamps. I hope you have a lot better time with them than I have!

Jon,
Oh the pain, the pain!! I would have a hard time doing that to a model I made, but then I have a hard time dirtying it up!! I want them all to look prim and pristine!!! I'm working on getting over these foibles! lol

Thanks for the link.

Well ya'll I am off to parts unknown for about 2 1/2 weeks. I look forward to checking the forum when I get back. I cleaned up the shop last night and preped it for starting on my Panther.
I am building a DML night fighter w/o the IR gear (just a late panther G) I have Abers engine screen, fenders and tool clamps. Model Kastens tracks. I will be using some spare Tamiya Panther G parts to spruce up the DML kit. I also am using Tamiya's steel wheels on it. I have not nailed down the camo yet. The dio will probably be from the opening of the Ardennes Offensive, No snow... I can't wait.

God Bless and Good luck

Jon did you spray your dots or brush them on your amush scheme. I would think they would be easier to brush.

Do you know if Tamiya's Panther late comes with schurzen? Hate to buy aftermarket things if I don't have to. I'm hoping Dragon comes out with one so I don't have to buy tracks. Tongue [:P]

I'm still planning on doing my G. I've wanted this kit for years. Now I have motivation to get it done. For the A, I like the vertically ridged with the diagonal lines. Are you building the A early or late?

Have you thought of a camoflauge pattern? I'm still leaning to ambush scheme.
