5/13 UPDATE-Project PRINCESS PANZER Completed, Walkaround photos up!!!!
Posted by I make stuff on Sunday, April 5, 2009 8:47 PM

My 7 year old daughter has recently taken an interest in "those tanks."  She bought me Dragon's 9000 series Jadgtiger Late for Christmas, asked if I would build a tank for her, picked out the color scheme, then readily agreed to help me build her tank.  THe color scheme is classified at present, but I promise to post pictures in all their glory.

This will be a quick OOB build, after going 12 rounds with the Aber on that Sherman.  It is essentially homework, though, because right behind it is the DML Jagtiger Late 6050, fruil tracks (my first set), Aber detail set, Aber skirt/fenders, and an Al barrel.  That one will be more conventionally painted.

Anyway, we were pretty busy this weekend, we removed 36 1/2 roadwheels from the sprues, cleaned a MILE of seams around the circumference, and got the suspension mounted.  This should go pretty quickly, there appear to be about 50 pieces left, other than the indy tracks.

Sorry about the glare, I was short on time.

And the progress:

Thanks to WBill for his helpful JGT thread on his build log site.

More later, but I am really enjoying this build

Ohhh, congrats on having your daughter help you; I remember building some wingy things with my dad, and having a blast...though...he did all the work... :P

Can I hazard a guess as to the paint scheme?  Is it going to be ambush pattern with a mixture of pink, pale blue, and grey with little flower outlines replacing the dots, and hannah montana pictures mounted instead of balkenkreuz's and the vehicle number?

There may be pink, but you didn't hear it from me.

Too bad you and your daughter weren't building a T34 or else you could justify painting it pink.

I spotted that at the local club's show a couple years ago.

One kit my daughter built that she really liked was the Tamiya Pink Panther SAS Land Rover. Molded in pink, it was an attractive kit to build.

It was pink at least. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandela_Way_T-34_Tank

It appears to have been repainted.

I am at liberty to disclose that THAT scheme is rather...tame...compared to the scheme that will be applied.

This WIP is really moving along, I am ready to prime the beast.  No photos at present, sorry, but it looks like any other Jagdtiger...for now.

Today or tomorrow, please do not attempt to adjust your monitors, it is going to get colorful.

Cover me, I'm going in!

OK, guys, sorry about the non traditional color scheme, this one was dictated to me by my 7 year old.

First, some Tamiya red preshading

Then, some base color, and yes, that is Tamiya "pink" with some flat base

And a shot of thr top, showing the presahding still peeking through

I'm going to "camo" this in specific 7 year old chosen colors, and the cannon color, hold on.  I figure its a dry run to my DML Jagdtiger with Aber and Fruil everything.  OOB is fun, and I can use the freehand AB practice.

Let me know what you think, and I'll pass it along, well, most of it along, to my 7 year old princess anti tank gunner.

Awesome color choices Bill!  I have a seven year old princess as well.  I paint everything in my home in squared away earth tones and last year my daughter broke the news she wanted a pink room.  I about went nuts and finally found a Marth Stewart color called Scented Notebook which is like a soft lavendar color that I could live with that matched the white baseboard and crown molding I put in.  You and your daughter enjoy that build!!

OK, I put down some camo, a princess ambush scheme.

Comments and criticisms always welcome, keeping in mind the techniques mine, while the color palette is literally out of my hands.

LOL. This reminds me of those Hostess twinkies with the coconut and zebra stripes.

At least you won't have to worry about weathering this thing. Enjoy the time with the daughter. My daughter and I were working on a VW bug until I inexplicably lost the directions. Talk about a dog of a kit too.

My thoughts EXACTLY, Wayne, but here's what we've got going for today.

The Princess did NOT specify certain things, so although it's a commission/spec build, I have certain liberties.  I will paint the tools in the usual manner, which will be great practice, and I will do a bit of weathering, no mud, but the edges of the steel roadwheels will be worn, and the teeth on the sprockets will get some silver chipping.  Here's a dry fit:

I think it's pretty cool, if I do say so myself.

It's great that you're able to bridge your hobby with your daughter Bill, but beware the ultimate trap...she's trying to teach you how to accessorize! Laugh [(-D] The Princess must be obeyed, but looks like you're still getting in some "stealth" practice on your techniques. Keep it coming! Wink [;)]

Thanks so much Bish, mg.mikael, Doog, agentg, vetteman42, Bill, and wing_nut!

As Bill knows, this terrifying juggernaut of psywarops is going to get modelkarsten shoes, NOTHING is too good for my baby!

There is a slight snafu, but I should be able to get some more progress shots up this weekend.

Thanks for following this thread, guys!  I had some self-preparation for ribbing before I posted, but this group is great.

PINK POWER!!!

At least until I start the OTHER Jagdtiger in my stash.

Citadelgrad87

I must admit I havent built any armor to date but heard about this build in the aircraft forum ( cant remember which one or from whom) and had to check it out. And I am happy I did. Like I said I am envious of you and your Princess sharing modeling, I cant think of a better hobby to pass on. I am very much looking forward to you next pictures. You were worried about ribbing huh LOL, well heres a bit.

WHY is it takin so long to show off your lil girls "PINK TANK" sheesh !! And dont forget the tool bag from one of those shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverily Hills. hehehe

I have always wanted to build a sherman maybe one day I will, no way it will be as nice as this one is though.

Keep up the way cool work and Pics

Hey Bill,

I dig it!  Kinda reminds me of a guy in the Aircraft section who built a Hello Kitty F-15.  I think if countries had spent more time painting their weapons of war in kinky, goofy and silly color schemes there would be much less war and many more laughs at the pub over beers! Big Smile [:D]

I gota say, it doesnt work for cammo, but everytime I look at it my eyes cross and I pass out (heh) but seriously, it does mess with my eyes BADDLY, so I guess it could mess up an enemy's eyes and let the tank get the first shot, or sometin

I concur whole heartedly about the time spent with the little princess. I have a 3 year old granddaughter who stands by eagerly as I finish a model. Most dont last too long after being completed but watching her have fun playing with them is priceless. She hasent yet suggested any colour schemes but she does in her own little way ask how it all goes together. She has even  learned to use tweesers while helping me to peel off masking fluid once Ive finished airbrushing something. I have no objection to her "claiming" a model as hers. Mind you she does at least let me finish building them before taking them away. Wouldnt miss the fun for all the money in the world. Now all I have to worry about is what is going to happen when her younger brother decides he wants to have one as well :)

OK, this week I painted the tools in the usual WBill manner, and edged the road wheels with some steel to represent minimal wear.

Tonight, my wife helped me pick out some "insignia" in the princess vein, we found some dry transfers from a recent toy that weren't being used, sort of an Archer-esque touch, no?

Next stop, tackling the Modelkastens and finishing this bad boy..er..little girl up.

What do you think?

I also plan on stencilling her name on the rear right flank.

Comments welcome, guys.  This build is a blast, but I must confess, she hasn't seen it since she told me where to put what color paint, then said "surprise me."  So you guys are my sounding board, kind of scary, the testosterone brigade calling the shots, but we can do it!

Bill this is awesomeI It's like an armored version of "the Mystery Machine" which was the van driven by the kids in the Scooby Doo Cartoon!

She is going to love it man!

I took my family to the LHS tonight to get some more supplies for my painting project this weekend and my 7 year old brought me a bird house kit she wanted me to buy and build with her! Fun times and they never happen again!
