Can I get some thoughts from some of the fine armor builders that use this forum... What are your thoughs on the 1/48 scale tamiya's armor series compaired to the 1/35 scale...Myself I have only built 1/35 scale in armor and that only a couple of tanks... I did find a tamiya 1/48 scale tiger 1 at hobby lobby marked down from 39.99 to 18.99....How could I pass it up...After checking out the tamiya web site seem there's quit a selection to build...are they a good build....Any thoughts

theyre a ton of fun to build, the one i built, was really a pleasure and i think the only thing really different is the metal hull and 1/48 takes up less space
Tamiya's 1/48 series is an all-around great series to work with. They build into nicely detailed builds and they have lower part counts then their 1/35 counterparts. Thus you get the best of both worlds, a nice quick build. However the 1/48 series isn't without faults, somethimes tools and etc are molded onto the hull, making it extremly hard to do detail painting. At other times the detail you find on a 1/35 build may be missing all together on a 1/48 build. (Oh, and the price is sometimes ridiculosly high for some of Tamiya's kits.)
Overall, Tamiya's 1/48 series has a great selection of many nicely molded vehicles. Thus worth one's time in my opinion.

That $40 price tag seems awfully high. I have never seen them higher then $30. I do think that 1/48 gives up some detail and ammenities compared to 1/35.

I build both because both are good!
It really is that simple..

i've found a preference to 148 in that 3 heavy tanks, one half-track w/infantry piling out and a small pegasus ceramic house in the space that no more than 2 135 scale would occupy, if that. they're also just as well detailed as their larger versions. it's unfortunate the dragon/dml didn't get in to 148 cuz they're coming out with a M4A3E2 in 172 which i'ld muchero preferro in 148, not to mention the rest of thier lineup

I started out on 1/48 Tamiya stuff. My first ever build was the Tamiya Tiger Mark I-it's bigger than my 1/35 Tamiya Marder!
As has been pointed out, the size difference isn't massive and some of the smaller parts were very fiddly for a newbie like me. I've switched to 1/35 now. You get FAR better value for money as your builds take longer and have more parts yet the price difference between the different size kit's isn't great. There are no moulded on tools which suck imo and the die-cast hulls ain't brilliant either: I've found them to be paint and cement fussy.
Finally, iirc Tamiya 1/48 figures scale out to about 5'3"! They are TINY!
I've got another Tiger 1/48 kit along with a 1/48 German Field Maintenance Crew which I'll be building up to make a little diorama but after that unless I see something that has the WOW factor I'll be sticking to 1/35.

I built some Bandai 1/48 way, way back. Not my cup of tea. I went back to 1/35th.
I really enjoy building in 1/48, it gives me a consistent scale with my Aircraft. The Tamiya kits are mostly excellent & some nice releases have also come from AFV Club, Hobby Boss, Italeri & ICM. The number of subjects available can keep you busy for a long time, but certainly pales in comparison to what's available in 1/35 or 1/72. I build them mostly OOB, but there is a large & growing amount of AM conversion kits, add -ons & accessories if you're so inclined.

They are very good quality kits. My only gripe is that I prefer modern armor and they only have a couple of HMMWVs in this scale. I would love to see their M1A1/A2 Abrams in 1/48 scale along with the Bradley and M113A3.

somebody is doing an M113 in 1/48th (maybe resin), and it seems like an M1 series is on the way as well. Personally, I'd like to see an M60 and an M48 along with an M109 and M110

I think hobby lobby model pricing is high... good think for 40% coupons...
I think the 1/48 are great, they were a great introduction to armor modelling for me.I have built qite a few.I have since ventured into 1/35,but I still like 1/48 for a change, doesn't take up a lot of space, and they go together fast.I highly recommend them.
All intresting reply's...I like the idea of 1/48 armor with the 1/48 aircraft.... That could lead to some nice personal group builds....
Tamiya stuff are always overprice. I rather pay less and get more detail , accurate stuff from DML. DML package comes with photo etch stuff is unbeatable. Some Tamiya kit comes with photo etch but the price will shoot up to sky high expensive.
